    • They're using Amaysim fibre…

  • Since when did people pay for fibre upgrades in the last couple of years?

    • This was the announcement, that paved the way for 'free upgrades'.

NBN Co announces upgrades for remaining homes and businesses on Fibre to the Node (13 JAN 2025)
      https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/…

Work on the upgrades will start immediately and be completed progressively. The upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

No it isn't. Homes first became eligible for FTTN/FTTC to FTTP in 2022.

Homes first became eligible for FTTN/FTTC to FTTP in 2022.

I think homes were eligible a while back, but the home-owner had to pay for the 'upgrade' of FTTP to the house itself. Then, if your nearest pit had the upgrade done, … all the neighbours on that street could get the "free" FTTP install to their respective houses.

I remember this, because I obtained quotes from NBNCo in 2021 and 2022, of about several thousand dollars for the FTTP upgrade, because I don't have FTTP itself.

The NBNCo are upgrading all parts of the Australian NBN network now, to FTTP itself,…and hoping to finish the work "at the end of 2030".

@whyisave: $0 FTTN/FTTC to FTTP started in 2022 and the majority of homes can get FTTP by December 2025.

$0 FTTN to FTTP by 2030 is for more locations and harder installations.

nbn are not upgrading all parts of the nbn to FTTP. There is no free upgrade path for FTTB/HFC/Fixed Wireless/Satellite to FTTP.

nbn are upgrading FTTN/FTTC to FTTP for $0. nbn upgraded Fixed Wireless to 4G and 5Gmm wave.

nbn technology choice FTTP costs thousands. No the neighbours have to pay thousands and it's not free for them because someone else had FTTP installed first.

@Twix: Thanks for that clear explanation.

There is no free upgrade path for FTTB/HFC/Fixed Wireless/Satellite to FTTP.

              Ah, OK.

That's my case then, as I am on the HFC network, so that's why I was checking my upgrade path in 2021 and 2022, and from memory, the price was quite high.

              • +1

@whyisave: HFC is sticking around at this stage. HFC to FTTP is about $15k to $30k.

                • @Twix: Yes, I think I got an amount around that ($16K, 18K) for parents' place and my place.

I hope one day, it can be 'tax deductible' as an educational or work-related expense, ha.
