Seems to be a well reviewed DAS, with 10 Gbps USB 3.2 type C connection and a decent fan, apparently quiet too.
Up to 22TB x 4. No hardware RAID but supports software RAID.
Hot swappable and push lock design, if that's what you're into.

East digital raised their usd pricing overnight by 10% :(
Holy smokes they did too, $500 for a brand new 16TB WD is pricey, sad it’s still cheaper than Aussie Retails. Just need charmers to bump the gst to 15% instead of taxing Gas Cartel and creating a sovereign wealth fund. That willl never happen cause Aussie punters are just slaves to self serving politicians and lobbyist.
yes, DAS sure is a great storage solution!
You're not wrong about taing the the gas cartels, just add 15% more HDD to compensate.
Software raid is better anyway
Can you help me understand this so I can do a bit more reading up on this. I have an always on NUC so a DAS makes sense. Do I Ned to worry about things like TrueNAS if I’m just using it aim JBOD mode?
I've never used TrueNAS so I can't comment on that but with a JBOD device like this I would be looking at passing USB through to a VM on the NUC and using something like Stablebit Drivepool to combine them into one with the ability to select which things get parity/redundancy.
If the NUC isn't a hypervisor then you just connect it I suppose.
Read something like this to get started. Software raid practical advantages I see as less downtime when there's a problem and more flexibility when there's not. https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/1e48irr/zfs_vs_rai…
Great price - works flawlessly with my GMK G2 mini server
Got one a while ago at this price, super happy with it - running cool and quiet too.
Which drives you got?
Random mix - 4TB SG Ironwolf, 4TB WD Red Plus, 8TB WD Blue, 1TB WD Green
With this ydo you just need to add a mini pc n100 then install truenas for photo and video backup and drop google storage?
Depends on whether that's your offsite backup
Yes but that would be your only copy of your data. I would suggest retaining your key files in Google and on that setup in case something goes wrong with one copy. Really you should have 3 copies of your data, in 2 formats with one stored off site from the others.
If you absolutely have to use google drive or m$ one drive, encrypt your files before you upload them. They scan your files for anything useful to add to your profile.
You'd want another service like Immich to sync the photos, and then those files on the NAS backed up to somewhere offsite.
All of this has cost and setup involved.
Adhere to the 3-2-1 rule of backups as others have mentioned, especially if you care for the contents.
Yep just make sure your device supports 10GBps on a USB port. USB naming standards are a mess
Does anyone make a rack mounted DAS case that doesn't cost millions?
What temps do you get on your hard drives while in use? I want to buy one of these but I am worried about the air flow and hdd temps.
Mine all run in the mid 30s when under general file transfer, media use.
@Tock do you know what is the average power consumption?
DAS + N100 mini is using ~20W min and ~60W max. So pretty low.
@Tock: Thanks. Assuming your mini-pc has no usb-c, and what I wrote down here is right, what max read/write speed do you get? Have you ever bothered measuring?
@Man10United: I have USB-C to mini PC so it is quick. Haven't bothered measuring but I certainly can't complain about network transfers/streaming or drive-to-drive transfers within the DAS. Really depends on what your use case is if you only have USB-A, but USB3 is no slouch anyway for normal activity.
Can you run HA on it while using as NAS
This is not a NAS has no OS/RAM/CPU to run HA
Thanks - misread the description!!
It's not a Nas.
So with one of these, with 4 HDD's installed, when you plug the USB into a PC, it shows up each individual HDD, is that correct?
Yes, like an internal drive.
Yes. And this one is USB 3.2 so if you have that on your PC you also get pretty great file transfer speeds.
Yeah, but you can use Stablebit Drivepool to combine them, or on Linux something like mergerfs.
I thought this was an actual NAS for $264. If you think about it, there's not much going on here with a case, fan and a SATA-USB interface.
Seems expensive to me for what it is.
If you don't mind the price, it's a clean way of adding extra storage.
100%. but it is what it is these days. everything is overpriced.
Yeah I tend to agree but I finally caved, wasn't going to build something nicer myself. Problem is the limiting factor of mini PC's these are a good solution, all up the cost is not that bad
Many people confuse DAS with NAS. If you’re not sure about the difference and are looking for a NAS, don’t buy this one - it’s a DAS, which means it has no built-in CPU or RAM.
Yep unless you just want to connect a couple of hard drives to a laptop at the same time it's better to get a NAS. You can even turn a NAS into a DAS so it has a direct connection to one PC and it also connects to the network.
Or this for $145

ORICO 5 Bay 3.5 Inch Hard Drive Enclosure USB C
Orico DAS devices don't have the best reputation.
I recently returned a TerraMaster NAS because drives never hibernated and OneDrive (an advertised feature I required) was known to be broken unless you were willing to install a Beta OS (official instruction from support). Their support was incompetent, and the 24/7 support sticker was decoration only as it takes days to get a response or appointment, and timeslots aren't 24/7.
I wouldn't touch TerraMaster again.
Fair enough.
TBH though if it's a choice between your returned TerraMaster NAS and an Orico DAS I would choose the NAS.
Too many reports of corrupted filesystems.
I got one of these last year, works well. I use Windows Storage Spaces for a soft raid to keep my data on
One issue I see here with my host machine is that my machine has usb-3 in type-A port. Even if I use one of my mini PCs still the same - since they don't have usb-c port as well. This means even though this DAS on paper has 10Gbps usb-c port (still usb 3), I will be limited to 5Gbps since afaik usb type A would be limited to that speed.
Not that it's an issue with this DAS, it's my machine's limitation.
Am I right on this?
Max throughput for USB-A is 10gbs @ usb 3.2
This is 10gbs USB C, so no bandwidth advantage
What generation is the usb-a port on the PC?
Great point. Now I looked it up:
Apparently usb 3.1 gen 1 has 5Gbps and gen 2 has 10Gbps.
My proxmox machine is usb-3.1. I have to figure out gen 1 or 2.
They really could have handled the versioning better
@Ozzy Ozbargain: Yes. It's very confusing. A point version would have been much clearer than the 2x1 2x2 suffixes
Turned out I have both 3.1 Gen 1 and 3.1 Gen 2 on my mother board which means I have both 5Gpbs and 10Gpbs. Thanks for your comment.
After the stunt Synology tried to pull with their branded drives, I'm looking for an alternative. This might be just it.
Apparently they are rolling back the stunt after the massive backlash
One would be an idiot to trust Synology to not pull that stunt again. This time it will be by stealth.
They may have reversed course on that, but I think they still have QuickSync unavailable on the iGPU by shipping broken drivers with DSM. All so they could save money on each unit shipped.
It's like they decided to stop shooting themselves in one foot in order to focus on the other.
Sure all of their silly restrictions can be worked around, but it's easier to just go to one of their competitors.
Apart from being a black box this is not remotely comparable to a Synology.
This isn't a NAS though.
I went with an Asustor DRIVESTOR 2 Pro Gen2 after returning a TerraMaster (Synology too expensive and I need it quickly). Very happy so far.
Any one run a plex server off this?
No they can't
you need a nas for plex. A das is just a big external hdd that you still need to plug into a pc (and then you can run plex).
Any hdd deals to pair?
Consider this 5 bay with daisy chain for $216 with eBay plus, I have it connected to my Mac mini and it purrs along
Decent price, but be careful with how you run these - there are horror stories about unreliable usb-sata controllers causing issues with zfs pools etc. Seems hard to know whether a given device has a reliable controller which can stand up to heavier use without drop outs, appropriately pass through SMART data, etc. until you buy it. Sometimes getting them working properly seems to require a bit of tinkering.
I second this .
This is a rock solid unit but needed a little patience.
I have this connected to my proxmox box running a zfs pool for slightly over a year now.
Cant recall the exact steps but i ended up passing a usb quirks parameter to the bootloader.
Additionally, these boxes are disgned such that the disk controllers are powered over usb. While the power brick just powers the drives.
In my case i found out my dell 7070 micro's usbc port has know power issues so i ended up using a usbc to usba cable to connect it.
So if buying to run with your mini pc ensure it can provide stable usb power.
The box has its own power source so trying to figure out the USB power issue you mention. Can U explain that a bit more? The USB quirks bootloader tweak is an interesting precaution. I run something similar so will look into it.
From what i understand . The drives are powered by the box's power source but the usb to sata disk controllers are powered over usb. Thats what one of the usb quirks was also about from what i recall.
@Razzorsharp: Cool. I had a look at it and there are some specific "quirks" it resolves so will keep an eye out and implement if needed. So far so good.
So this is just a HDD enclosure, Case thing?
Exactly right, if you're limited on interfaces you can use 4 drives over a single usb
could be good with small NUC and ZFS configured via TrueNAS / FreeNAS
Just get an AOOSTAR NAS from Ali?
For double the price?
Why buy a pick-up truck when all you need is a trailer?
You don't need to pay more for a nas when your intention is to hook this up to an existing computer.
If you include the cost of a mini pc to run the DAS then I guess they'd be a similar price all up
Well if you already have a pc that you just want to upgrade with more storage then, no your argument doesn't work. The pc was already there so it's free.
If your intention is building a nas then you buy a nas.
I’ve got this running with a Mac Mini, great solid DAS and nice and quiet with WD Red Plus 5400 drives.
Now just need HDD prices to come down
