Bangkok / Thailand Foreign Exchange Cash FX

Hi all as an occasional Thai / Bangkok traveller it was frustrating when Citi pulled out. However as per many forums the best way is to bring A$ with you to change there. The Superrich ones usually have the best reputations for best prices. Regularly I fly into Bangkok with A$ only. The green superrich right near the airport train (I usually catch it in to avoid traffic) has the best FX rates in Suvarnabhumi Airport. Don Mueang airport has HappyRich which is a lot tougher to find and recommend that you look at this video to find https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IItVf4acb5I (I got lost trying to find it even with video).

Have usually been going to Green Superrich Head Office as close to Central World with FX differential usually 10-15pts. However recently stumbled across Yes Exchange which I have found the best with 8pts difference (eg today Buy 21.15 and sell 21.23) and noticed other Australians going there as well. Happy to hear other recommendations and always good to look up the FX before you go - websites below (make sure you look at specific branch). For clarity, there are no additional fees. Make sure to bring passport as some do not accept copies/soft copies driver licenses.

That opening line reads really interestingly if you assume Citi is a person and A$ means ass.

    • I was intrigued by SuperRich and HappyRich

    • That explains why Net Nanny has hidden all the text from the OP's post…

All this heartache is probably worth it if you are exchanging a couple of million dollars.

  • Honestly, get a debit card without an international transaction fee and visit an ATM at a 7-eleven. It will make your life so much easier than going through all that.

Going to Thailand very soon will test out the Foreign Exchanges.

  • I took some AUD in cash when I visited recently, but in hindsight I may as well have just withdrawn from an ATM (Macquarie) and accepted the fee.

If you're OK carrying around your passport, have an exchange near your accommodation or conveniently on your routes then it might be worth taking cash.

  • Useful info, thanks

  • I'd be curious whether taking the hit on the withdrawal fee but accessing the MC/Visa exchange rates might be better than taking the usual hit on exchanging physical currency.

Usually I get a couple of hundred AUD worth of foreign currency done before I go so I have something ready immediately but any more cash I need I withdraw in country.

Haven't been Thailand in many years but yes used to use Citibank.

Went to Thailand for a month in August. Used very little cash. Can just insert Macquarie card at 7/11 terminals, download the Grab app and add the Macquarie card as payment for taxis, and obviously pay for hotel bills etc with the Macquarie card too. Very rare you actually need cash. Most massage places even take card, and many many restaurants. You will only need cash for street food and a few bits and pieces. Plus its safer not to have all that cash with you! And my tip, grab your True 30 day sim card from and 7/11, if you are friendly and not demanding they will set up your phone for you, and the sim is either 249 baht or 299 baht, I forget. DONT buy your sim card at the airport. Just do it at the first 7/11 you see. You might have to push to get these cheap sim cards, they tend to hide them quite well behind the counter and I get the feeling they try to not market them to tourists. They are data only, no SMS or calls.

    • "True 30 day sim card from and 7/11" is that an eSIM ?

        No, just a standard sim.

In tourist areas and most international businesses you shouldn't have issues using card, same with hotels. A few resturants would take card, but many businesses that do charge a 2-4% surcharge. I found it diabolical that Supermarket chains in Thailand do not accept (Only one I recall that do were Big C and maybe Lotus, potentially a couple of others. 7/11 do accept card, but with a 200 baht minimum), Marko, 24 Supercheap, Tops and a few others do not unfortunately and only accept cash (or Thai QR code payment- only avaliable if you have a Thai bank account), even getting the public bus from the airport (Phuket) was cash only. Any fruit markets and butchers, you'll need cash (or a Thai account for QR code payments).

ATMs there all charge a 220 baht amount to withdraw, If I did need to withdraw cash, I'd just transfer to my missus via WISE and she'd get it from her banks ATM (no fee).

For those without that luxury, I'd bring an amount of AUD with you + a little bit for incidentals and exchange at SuperRich (consistently give the best rates). Use a Fee Free debit/credit card for purchases where avaliable (I like WISE or Macquarie). Worst comes to worst, if you need to eating a $10 fee isn't the end of the world.
