  • It was a good price at $121 before Christmas, even better now!!

I'm currently investigating enhancing its functionality here
    http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?p=39162

  • Is it possible to put a larger disk in it, say 1tb?

    • I guess so.. I only bought the 320Gb model with plans to do just that in the future.

      • is this NAS Network Drive good? noisy? how is the speed?

        • Speed is not blazing fast, it's a base model NAS. But it's not the worst.
The small cooling fan is reasonably noisy, high pitched whine.. certainly wouldn't want it in a bedroom. In a study with a regular PC you won't notice it though. Mine will live in a ventilated cupboard when it's all set up, so noise isn't an issue for me.
I'm hoping the hacked firmware I plan to add will allow it to act as a media server for my xbox.
For the price, it's a great product..

          • @ESEMCE: Why is any hacking needed? Can you not just play media files from a network shared folder? That what I do with my Xbox. Or is yours and Xbox360 and that needs something else? If so, please educate me on that.
Somewhere I remember reading a comment about this NAS that it wouldn't have enough memory for advanced third party firmwares. Is that not true?

            • @jakentta: Yeah I have a 360.. a NAS needs to have a UPnP media server for media to be seen by the 360. the 360 can play files directly from a USB drive though.. really annoying!!

The NAS has very restrictive memory, only 16Mb total and 12Mb free. There isn't much room to play with in advanced hacked firmwares but there is some room for a simple hacked firmware.
I'm hoping there is enough to run a UPnP media server, which there ought to be, it'll be a matter of whether I have the technical knowhow to install it.

        • according to the comments made here http://bhandler.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!70F64BC910C9F7F3!12… it seems to be a very very basic NAS drive.

          • @Easy Money: with stock firmware it is..
at that price, what do you expect?

            • @ESEMCE: exactly what i was thinking, will think long and hard over this one, nice price, limited functionality….btw what new functionality does a newer firmware unlock?

              • @Easy Money: each funtion is individually installable.. and there's no guarantees it'll work.

All I'm interested in is the Media Server but if you search for optware you'll find a list of packages for it.

              • @Easy Money: Well I gou Ushare up and running on the NAS. and I could see video files from my xbox. none of them would actually played though, this is due to the Xbox's limited codec support I presume. I will put some music and pictures on it tonight to see how it goes serving them to the xbox.

      • I have a D-link DNS323 with 2x750Gb drives and wanted a 'backup NAS'. If I could get a 1tb or 1.5tb disk in this one it would be a good buy…..
