    Some read/write results:

    Read: 14.90 MB/Sec Write 4.92 MB/Sec

    or

    Read 18.37 MB/Sec Write 3.11 MB/Sec

There are a few other results listed for it on the site below but they are all within the same range.

    Edit: Found a higher 22.72 MB/Sec Read / 11.82 MB/Sec write.

    Couldn't add to cart.

      I'd consider that a sign.

    usb 2 or 3?

    • +1

Does it matter? Even with the highest transfer speed mentioned above (22.72MB/sec), that's about HALF the speed which USB2 can do. Even if this stick is USB3, you'll still get the same speed from a USB2 port.

      • +2

I'd consider it important, and I wish people would state whether it was USB 2 or 3 in the description at least. Many, many people have USB3 ports these days.

        • Are you and the head comment just trolls or are you computer illiterate?

OT: I find these usb keys great for 'lending' to people since you can get them copying before bed and grab them in the morning.

But they are useless for moving data around on the run, IE grabbing a movie before going to someone house.

        • Neither. This applies to every post about USB drives. Just because one guy posted the read/write results this time doesn't mean it always happens. I shouldn't have to read the comments to find out.

      • Considering that the 11.82mb write speed is far above the typical write speeds for these drives.
Perhaps reread the above post also to clarify in your own mind what it says because your comment indicates some confusion :)
And I have USB3 too so it is important.

        • No confusion in my mind, but perhaps I didn't explain my reasoning thoroughly enough.

USB2 runs at 480Mbps, so theoretically can transfer about 60Mbytes per second. There is some signaling overhead and timing constraints in the USB system which limit the actual maximum rate to under 50Mbytes per second. Then there is operating system overhead, writing or reading file system linkages and so forth, which reduce the maximum throughput to roughly 40Mbytes per second on a typical Windows PC.

That's still roughly double the highest speed quoted for this drive.

Although there are USB3 drives available, AFAIK only the read speed can out-pace a USB2 port. MSY's Patriot drives, for example, have a reported read speed in the 60-75Mbytes per second range. However, for most people, it's not the read speed which is important, it is the write speed. No USB flash drive can out-pace a USB2 port on write speed, as far as I have seen. Even Sandisk's product page for their "Extreme" drives refuses to say what the write speed is, they only say "Up to 190 MB/s** ; write speed lower and varies by capacity".

So perhaps I should have said "For 99% of the things you want to do with a USB drive, buying a USB3 drive in preference to a USB2 drive won't give you a detectable speed-up, even though your PC has USB3".

It is possible to make a USB "drive" which can write at speeds faster than USB2 can sustain, but to do that you have to buy an SSD and put it into a USB3 housing of the sort normally used for a 2.5" hard drive.

        • Anyway just for the hell of it I benchmarked a $11 2011 ARAM 8GB USB 2, 17.93MB read 9.372MB write, has it all over the average of this Sandisk.

For those in Brisbane, just go to Computer Alliance and get the 16GB Lexar JumpDrive V10 USB 2.0 for $5.95

  • Its $10 normal price at MSY if you miss out at HN. HN in City cross has one left in Adelaide if anyones nearby, I was going to grab it thinking its a bargain but after checking MSY site its a typical price, just like a bargain as HN have them reduced down from $24 which is laughable.

Well that's just not good enough is it? Failure is not an option!
