ozbargainers hate norton even when it's free…

      zelda707, Then don't buy please :)

  • +3

Almost free - a very good price for those needing something other than a free AV

    • and why is a free antivirus worse than Norton?

      • +2

        Who said it was?

A lot of older people and computer newbies (usually the older ones) seem to think that unless they've paid for an antivirus, then it cannot be any good. For them, this would be a bargain.

We've been using free ones ourselves for over 10 years, after one of them picked up a virus that Norton had missed. They suit our purposes fine.

A lot of older people, computer newbies, and experts (usually the older ones) seem to think that unless they've paid for an antivirus, then it cannot be any good.

There; fixed that for you. Seriously, go talk to an expert - a CISSP, a CISA, whatever - and see whether they use free AV on Windows.

We've been using free ones ourselves for over 10 years….

Do you test it, regularly? Do you know how? If your AV's been comprised by a virus/worm and has been tricked into looking like it's working - which is usually step one in an infection - how would you know?

I'm not pushing for Symantec here - use McAfee's, use Kaspersky, F-Secure, whatever - I'm just saying that it takes time and effort to keep track of the tens of thousands of pieces of malware released each year; and if you won't pay for that time and effort, it's likely that nobody else is, either.

        • You'd know because even the companies offering paid Antivirus programs - like Symantec - offer free scanners so you can check any time you like (if you felt the urge). For example:

          http://security.symantec.com/NSS/GetNSS.aspx

I worked in IT Support for five years (now a programmer) and if someone complained of a slow computer or random lock-ups, the first thing I'd do would be to uninstall and re-install McAfee Antivirus, which fixed the problem in most cases. I've had similar experiences with Norton on friends and family's computers.

It's no secret that these programs like to get in your face and create the appearance at every opportunity that they are protecting you. If they ran silently in the background and you never noticed them, who would continue buying them?

I disable plugins in Chrome (easy to click to see plugin content), I'm sensible about which websites I visit (not a p*rn or warez fiend), and I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I have a clean, fast, trouble-free computer.

I just had to uninstall Norton 360 for a customer because it was in part locking up their system

It's slow and I wouldn't trust a product to keep your computer clean when it bundles Ask Browser Toolbar which is arguably spyware/adware

  • I am still waiting for my rebate from Norton since Decemeber :(

    • My cheques arrived today, so yours should not be too far away..

Alright, you're now going to create a rush for an antivirus most purchasers here are unlikely to use. lol

      Nicely spotted.

Incidentally, I've just noticed, the pic in the link is for multiple devices. On offer is the single user pack.

    • nice so we pretty much get a $30 dicksmith gift card for free. OP should add this to the deal
Edit: on a closer look on the term and condition page this offer is only for Norton 360 3/5/7 user pack. Doesnt seem like it apply to the single user pack

  • There is no reliable AV solution in the market, and Norton/Symantec is far from the better solutions out there.

Avast and AVG are free and aren't as horrible.

I recommend using MSE and a second opinion system such as Hitman Pro or a VirusTotal shell extension.

The only reliable form of security is commonsense and up-to-date software.

Having an outdated installation of Java/Flash on a PC with the most expensive AV solution installed is FAR worse than having an up-to-date (or no) installation of Java/Flash on a PC without any AV.

    • MSE for a secure system, seriously?

      • Whats wrong with MSE? I've been using it for 2 years now without any major problem..

        • Other than the fact it failed AV-Test Certification for the 2nd time

  • upgrade your i7 to the performance of a 386…

  • Still $9.95 too much…

  • -1

Am i the only person who has not bothered with any av for years? Almost like wearing a helmet while going for a walk.

    • You really don't need it unless opening things from questionable sources.

I do that occasionally which is exactly why I have one.

mums and dads seem to need one after spending 10 minutes on the internet…..

  • can I get $20 off via ebay?

  • Apparently this deal ends today..

Bonus $30 Gift Card Offer ends today!

No you cant get it from ebay as the $40 cashback is only from a retailer.. As for buying it online i'm not sure you have to check th T&C

  • not a bad deal for a boxed AV suite, Norton has improved a lot since 2012.

however, i cant see the need to spend any more than the ~$3 per year it costs to get a key from one of the various eBay sellers of Bitdefender Internet Security…every key ive purchased this way has activated and worked just fine.

  • $69.95 now, no gift card
