  • Blocks yt ads ?

  • +1

Revanced youtube app works well to block ads.

  • +10

With DNS protection on, it blocks nearly all ads on iOS. An essential service imho.

Just remeber to turn it all off for cashback!

    • Only problem is logging into Ticketmaster (Or Ticketek.. one of the two..)

      Other than that, beaut!

      • +1

You should be able to whitelist sites/domains. I don't use it so don't know the settings.

    • With Limit IP address tracking on iOS, doesn’t every DNS request go encrypted all the way to Apple?

      • Can't you just set a private DNS service such as cloudflare or Quad9?

        • +1

Yes, but that doesn't do the ad filtering.

  • +8

    Brave Browser for YT.

  • Why is this a subscription? Does it run anything externally? I.e.: dns etc

Or is it all just built into the app

    • It's a service for DNS level ad blocking

      You can also [selfhost]https://adguard.com/en/adguard-home/overview.html) it.

      • First question: is it better than pihole?
Second question: does it break catchup TV streaming (like pihole does)?

        • On 10play or maybe 9now, I sometimes have to toggle it off, or just set a bypass rule for that channel

          • +1

@impoze: I had to whitelist doubleclick to get catchup to work and that point the pihole was basically useless. Did you face the same thing?

        • On my pihole I have a separate group that the tv is in which can then have seperate blocking lists and avoid breaking the catchup streaming

  • +6

I bought this a while ago, but turned it off as it was too much of a hassle.
Blocked cashback, some sites objected, etc.

    Now use Brave for YouTube.

    • +5

It’s a simple toggle to turn dns off for cashback stuff

      • Im selfhosting it and set it up as a toggle automation in home assistant.

      • +1

Or just whitelist the two remaining cashback sites

    • I haven't had it block cashback (using the DNS version), but it does often block Google sponsored suggestions (when it's actually the item I want to view and have specifically clicked on)

  • +5

    You can also selfhost it.

    • Thanks! compare to pi-hole, which is better?

      • +3

Pretty much the same, it will just come down to your filter list.

Set up Adguard Sync as a backup DNS

      • I ran both. Initially on pi-hole for 3 years and for the last 6 months with Adguard. Interface on Adguard is much simpler and easier to manage. Not switching back.

        • TBH, it should be a set and forget.

Can i have your opinion on the UI? Pi-hole vs Adgaurd?

          • +1

@NGPriest: Usually I don't really care about the UI so long as it's not overly complicated.

For me Adguard is a Pi-hole with less clutter and easier to understand interface. I actually have the patience and willingness to configure all the things I need without loosing my patience.

            • +1

@Ooops: I started with Pi-hole when i was messing around with my UDM.

I was able to create a container, then add DNS over HTTPS, along with port forwarding using port 53.

That way, i was able to block chromecast/googletv from phoning home and bypassing my DNS.

I'll spin up a VM with adguard and see how the UI is :D

              Thanks again Ooops

    • +2

      To add to this.

If you want it on your phone while out than use tailscale as an alternative to forwarding ports.

  • -4

Are your windows 11 keys legit?

    • Yes, untill Microsoft blocks them

  • Is it useful much for anything other than YT ads?

Already have premium, so don't need it for YT.

    • +1

Blocks a lot of ads in browsers and some streaming apps. Funnily enough, I notice the most blocked ads on ozbargain.

    • +2

      Ahh thats cool!

      And negging because..

      • -7

        Not worth spending the $
May as well host your own DNS that block ads.

        • Piholes good but isn't this cheaper ?

        • +1

Can you do that with no overhears, maintenance, electricity, updates and so on?

And that's ignoring that buying a Pi costs about 10x the cost of buying the subscription if you need something to run it on.

          • @spaceflight: Ignoring the name, pi-hole actually runs on many devices besides a raspberry pi.

Very lightweight like Adguard and some routers even have it preinstalled as an option.

    • +1

      Not everyone has a homelab.

      • -2

        Don't even need a homelab.

You can run it on any VM or docker, then forward the DNS port 53 so you can block ads while you're out and about.

        • +9

Which the everyday person has no idea of

          • -2

@impoze: There are some guides that can allow anyone interested in tinkering to start?

            (That's how i got started :p)

            Then i ran up a 2nd VM incase/when the 1st went down :p

Edit: I plan to migrate everything to alpine, smaller RAM footprint.

            • +2

@NGPriest: I'm deep into the selfhosting rabbit hole, with a full stack of docker containers, NAS and home server.

I've just come to understand that not everyone is like us.

Especially DNS which can take out your internet if no fallbacks set up etc.

              • @impoze: Yeah, i need to spin up more VM Clusters, since that's where my weak spot is.

I've also had to play around with my firewalls to stop Chromecasts/GoogleTV from bypassing my DNS.

But yes, getting my feet wet allowed me dive into this pool :D

    • +1

no one asked what hole you prefer

  • Why this over ublock? or brave?

    • -2

      Malicious website block
      Anti malware block
      Infected device block

    • +2

This is DNS level on your own phone, so it even blocks ads etc that aren't in the internet browser.

Avoids the expertise and hassle required to set up a pihole/homelab (which are also limited to your own home network, unless you host it).

  • +1

It's glitchy, kept crashing and just not that good honestly. I paid for it, persisted for a few motnhs then uninstalled the whole thing

  • +5

Several free options exist. The simplest is to use the LibreWolf browser with the uBlock Origin extension. For network-wide filtering, create a NextDNS account and set your router to use its DNS resolvers. Everyone on your home network then gets ad blocking, malware protection, and optional parental controls.

    • Is it safe to use these? As a Lehman, I feel all traffic go through their servers and out gmail or bank accounts can be compromised? Could that happen?

      • +1

        As a Lehman

Are you one of the brothers?

  • +2

You can also run adguard on some routers like gl.inet

    • Install it on Merlin on ASUS routers too

      • -1

ASUS routers already includes it for free

        • -3

BUT, you have to INSTALL it via PUTTY

          • @klaxton: No, Adguard is included in the ASUS-wrt firmware - at least on routers in the last 5 years

            • -1

@freeb1e4me: NOT according to known facts - Perplexity.ai (is adguard included on ASUS routers)

Wi-Fi 7 Models with AdGuard DNS
All current ASUS Wi-Fi 7 routers, including models like the ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro, RT-BE96U, and others, have AdGuard DNS integration as a default security and privacy feature. This means ad-blocking applies network-wide for all connected devices.

              Older Models and Manual Setup
Non-Wi-Fi 7 ASUS routers do not include AdGuard DNS by default.

Users may configure AdGuard DNS manually via the WAN DNS settings or install advanced ad-blocking tools like Diversion (with Asuswrt-Merlin custom firmware) or AdGuard Home.

Manual setups provide similar network-wide ad-blocking and privacy protection for older ASUS routers.*

              • @klaxton: This is the problem of using AI and not fact checking.

You have gone from “Install using Putty” to “Adguard only on wifi 7 routers”.

The fact is Adguard home has been available on ASUS routers for ages.

You are probably confused by the various Adguard products:

Adguard home - self hosted solution, better, and more comprehensive

Adguard DNS - non self hosted/cloud solution

            • +3

@freeb1e4me: You are LUCKY to have WiFi 7 5 years ago Most of us didn't

          • +2

@klaxton: No, it's just on the sidebar
            Toggle it on and configure.

See the screenshots on the page

  • +5

I recommend it, been great for blocking ads on my Android apps rather than just my browser

    • How? I still get in-App ads on Android :-(

      • Not sure, something to do with routing everything through the VPN feature on your phone. It's not a VPN though, so maybe some DNS thing?

  • +3

This is the best for a mobile phone, hands down. I use it on Windows too and browser extension. Absolutely worth the price.

  • +2

    Worth it. Buy it.

  • +2

Why buy this? ublock origin lite does this for free?

      • Aka useless if you use your head and not do dumb stuff

        • +2

If you have a family with children then dumb stuff is all they do - hence the family subscription!

    • +1

In my experience this is the only Android ad blocker that does a good job of cosmetic filtering - removing ads in their entirety rather than just replacing them with a blank square. Yes, on a computer you'll have more options for ad blockig for but very happy with thelifetime subscription I bought a while back and it pays itself off in mobile data savings

  • -2

there is no such thing as a lifetime subscription

as soon as the company is sold, or shut down due to costs as cloud isn't free, they will change the terms

the most obvious example is you get your "software" stuck at some outdated version 1-2 years down the line, the newer versions contains updates, features and support but you need a new subscription fee to obtain it…

99.99% of companies has done this, don't be fooled

    • +4

My first lifetime licence from adguard is from 2016 and I paid 558 rubles. Paid itself over time and time again. So yes it is lifetime of a company, but the company isn't going anywhere.

      • If the company lasts for another 200 years, can I pass my subscription to my grand grand grand son?

        • They'll say the license was only for your lifetime then.

        • Yes, as long as they use same username and password and have access to your email.

  • Last time I bought it something on stack social with a lifetime subscription it expired

    • lol, me too. It was a Getflix 'lifetime' subscription then.

As long as you purchase knowing it's not 'your' lifetime, hopefully you'll get your money back at least when the wheels fall off.

  • How does this compare to ublock origin?

    • Ublock only works well with Firefox & Brave.

Chrome (groogle) doesn't like ad blocking so they only allow Ublock Lite, but very limited in functionality compared to the full version

      • +1

Sounds like there's a simple solution in there somewhere.

        • Sadly no. Firefox and Brave on Android suffer from terrible memory leak/management, where it forcibly refreshes the webpage when you switch from other apps. It actually makes signing via 2FA near impossible, because when you switch back from viewing the 2FA code the login page refreshes in an impossible loop. These bugs have been known for years to Firefox and Brave developers, but remain unfixed.

Privacy oriented forks of Chrome like Cromite have ABP built in and don't have memory leak issues, but that still leaves other apps stuck with cancerous pop, auto play, and banner ads, which is where Adguard comes in.

  • Can this block ads on ozb :)
