    • lol, me too. It was a Getflix 'lifetime' subscription then.

As long as you purchase knowing it's not 'your' lifetime, hopefully you'll get your money back at least when the wheels fall off.

      • +2

My Getflix lifetime is still working. Purchased in 2015 from Stack Social. - it may be limited in some way now I'm not sure, no longer have a need for it - but their VPN still works fine.

  • How does this compare to ublock origin?

    • Ublock only works well with Firefox & Brave.

Chrome (groogle) doesn't like ad blocking so they only allow Ublock Lite, but very limited in functionality compared to the full version

      • +2

Sounds like there's a simple solution in there somewhere.

        • Sadly no. Firefox and Brave on Android suffer from terrible memory leak/management, where it forcibly refreshes the webpage when you switch from other apps. It actually makes signing via 2FA near impossible, because when you switch back from viewing the 2FA code the login page refreshes in an impossible loop. These bugs have been known for years to Firefox and Brave developers, but remain unfixed.

Privacy oriented forks of Chrome like Cromite have ABP built in and don't have memory leak issues, but that still leaves other apps stuck with cancerous pop, auto play, and banner ads, which is where Adguard comes in.

  • Can this block ads on ozb :)

    • That's blasphemy

    • +2

      Just sign in.

    • -1

There's ads on ozb? (apart from the obvious posts by some retailers)

      • Yes the entire deals section is technically advertising

      • I see no more ads now and feel much lighter the website. This is what to expect for a genius and light weight forum.

    • You can toggle them off in settings when signed in

  • I'm running the adguard home plugin on opnsense, it's free, do I get more if I buy this? Had been using pi-hole for the past few years before setting this up a week ago.

    • It's just an alternative to selfhosting it.
      - higher availability
      - any network, not just local network without port forwarding/tailscale etc

      • Tried installing tailscale plugin the other day, broke my opnsense. Thankfully backed up.

        • Opnsense bare metal or virtualised?

  • I already run Adguard Home at home, but maybe this would be good for when I'm out with my phone/laptop?

    • +1

Yes, if you dont want to port forward or run over something like Tailscale

There are free DNS level alternatives, with resolvers based locally in Australia such as NextDNS and ControlD…

    https://docs.controld.com/docs/free-dns

    I would recommend OISD Full.

    • What is OISD Full and why would you recommend it?

    • I use this, but find it not enough.
      Using synology dns so use
      76.76.2.32
      76.76.10.32

Are there any free that let you combine multiple lists?

      • I think you need to subscribe to ControlD be able to combine lists, similar to NextDNS.

OISD I recommend as its not too strict that it ends up breaking websites and functionality. It also works well if combined with uBlock.

  • +2

They have a free public DNS which blocks ads and can be entered into your router: https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

  • Ublock is free, takes 10 seconds to set up, and blocks all ads.

    • Ublock is within browser. What about kids devices or ads in apps.
      This is DNS level blocking.

The last time I bought a similar deal from Stacksocial for Adguard - logging into the Adguard portal, it said my subscription was a "trial subscription" with more than 3000 days of expiration. I had expected to say "Subscription" or similar, rather than "trial subscription".

Raised a ticket with Stacksocial asking why that was the case, and after providing screenshots, was provided a refund.

    Buyer beware (especially around support).

  • How does the parental control work? Looking for something that blocks screen time and filter apps on Android and ios..

    • This doesnt control apps that way but it can block the content within apps.

      https://adguard.com/en/blog/adguard-parental-control.html

For example, if they open the browser, and visit adult material it would show a blocked page.

To set up screen time limits, set it up within the device settings - https://support.apple.com/en-au/108806

      • Yep thanks, that's a good way of doing it. I don't have an Apple device so wanted to it remotely, but this works too!

      • I paid for the app but it seems if used as parental control, anyone can just turn off the app?

        • The app is for your device only.

Point your wifi router DNS to the Adguard DNS.

Then every device that connects to your wifi will go through Adguard.

          • @3dprintdeals: That's fair. But doing that, you don't need this subscription at all?
Also the router method doesn't work when you're not at home

            • @cheapass88: that's right.

For on device, to prevent kids from turning off in the app, you can block them from opening it with family link.

Alternatively, use an app locker, and disable it from being uninstalled/forced stop in device settings.

    • +1

Check out google family link to manage screen time, block kids installing apps etc which is free.

      https://families.google/familylink/

    • You can control kids' time limit and apps via Google Family app

  • Suggested price : $169.99
    Deal price: $39.99
    This price: $16.57

That's 90% off basically. Anyone paid for full for this?

    • +4

No one in history has ever paid retail for this. That's like paying for WinRAR.

      • I think most of the time people just need the basic things without the need of the subscription that offers extra features. Too late I already paid. Still fair price tho as I don't think it will go lower than 90% off. The term "family" really hooked me in. Hopefully I can make use of the extra features out of this subscription.

        • +1

I purchased it in the past on impulse, I use their DNS alternative though and don't even use the sub

  • I wish it could block in app ads, but it didn't.. But still good to block annoying pop outs ads and n browser

    • The DNS version would likely block most app ads, but it's a limited free tier or requires a paid monthly / yearly plan

Alternative is to just use their open source list with open source software

  • +1

This is the program isn't it? They publish their list publicly, you can setup pihole or alternatives for free

I don't think this includes the DNS solution, which is actually a service not just software to replace open source alternatives

  • +1

I like ads though. Would have missed out on a ton of deals had I used an adblocker

  • +2

Says $11 USD at checkout on paypal, but got charged $12.10 USD

    • GST

  • I bought lifetime few years ago, but that was a onetime payment, not a subscription, i think it was $30 for 9 devices for lifetime.

  • For blocking YouTube ads in Android I just use Vivaldi browser, also can play with screen locked and in background

  • +4

Final price was AUD18 something after it added USD1.10 in tax

  • +1

How is this different from manually entering the Adguard DNS ip address in your network setting to block ads which is free?

    • This is what I'd like to understand too.

  • +1

Is it app bassed or DNS?

  • +1

I've had adguard for 6 months and its so worth it. Use it in laptop and samsung

  • I use the free version. What’s difference?

    • free version has limited queries. this one can be added to your modem and your whole house is protected. Mobile phones can be setup individually so you are protected when on mobile coverage/internet. pretty good value.

  • I'm genuinely happy with their subscription. The DNS-level blocking works brilliantly on Android and Windows. It can be buggy from time to time on Mac though.

  • Hopefully the subscription lasts, mine says "Lifetime license, Family".

  • I can’t really find much online about the apps that the DNS will block ads for on iOS. Does it work with Instagram, Facebook, YouTube? Not quite sure what the benefit is over the free version

  • Can it block video ads in FB app??

    • +1

No. It can't block video ads. Just started free trial to find out. For anyone who is thinking about this feature.

  • Best way to remove ads for YouTube on TV? Currently running premium.

    • SmartTube

  • Google: The Family plan provides a single license that can be used across multiple devices, so there isn't a separate "family account" or specific invitation process.

I can use the key on their devices with whatever accounts. They count the devices.

Also, this subscription is for the adguard adblocker.
