National parks throughout NSW will be offering free entry on 26 January this year to help families and their friends have the perfect Australia Day.

Our state has a world class national park system, with stunning scenery, relaxing picnic areas and an amazing array of wildlife and cultural heritage found nowhere else in the world - what better way to celebrate Australia Day than to enjoy a break in our unique national parks?

Because Australia Day is about celebrating what makes Australia great, the NSW Government is making entry free to NSW national parks on the day, so why not take the opportunity to gather your family and friends and experience the real wonder of our natural environment in a national park near you?

National parks throughout NSW will waive entry fees on January 26 to celebrate Australia Day.

Premier Nathan Rees said Australia Day was a perfect time to appreciate the nation's natural beauty.

"Our native bush is an important symbol of what it means to be Australian," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Our parks are home to stunning scenery, relaxing picnic areas and an amazing array of wildlife and cultural heritage found nowhere else in the world."

He said he hoped free entry would encourage people to go bush on Australia Day, with many parks holding special activities.

"Most people in Sydney could travel less than a half hour from home and find themselves surrounded by the Australian bush in a national park," Mr Rees said.

"There is no better way for all of us to understand how important our natural environment is than by getting out there and experiencing the bush first hand."

Wait what? NSW people need to pay to enter a national park!?

    • You betcha!!!
      Have had to for decades…
      [ :- { )

    • WHAT? You mean people outside of NSW don't have to pay to go to national parks??

      • Not us canetoads… Never have (, never will???).

  • Many of the national parks that have public facilites such as gas BBQs, jungle gyms for the kids, bins/recycling, and football fields have a fee per car to enter the area. This fee is only imposed on weekends.

  • what are some nice spots to visit?

  • Great initiative, I don't mind a small charge during the weekends if it means our national parks are kept in pristine condition.

  • And many Parks are holding special activities on the day, too…

LAKE MUNMORAH NATIONAL PARK (near NEWCASTLE) is good example of park to go to; the one & only long strech of nude beach in NSW within a National Park, and on Australia Day, it's free!

    • Free of clothes!!! LOL
