Could be, but CHECK THE PACKAGING!!

I was at Officeworks yesterday price matching the Harvey Norman deal, but Officeworks also had another model on the shelf that was selling for $145.

Officeworks stock TWO different models. "WD My Passport" and "WD My Passport Essential". They look exactly the same, except the $189 version (My Passport) has 3 year warranty and the $145 version (My Passport Essential) only has 2 years warranty!

The one Harvey Norman are sell is the 3 Year Warranty model. Check the Barcode on the "Specifications" tab on the HN Website.

If warranty doesn't matter to you, then the "Essential" version is exactly the same. But for the same price, why not get the one with 3year warranty?

3 year warranty model (OW $189)
      Model number: WDBY8L0020BBK-NESN
      Barcode: 718037783475

2 year warranty model (OW $145)
      Model number: WDBY8L0020BBK-EESN
      Barcode: 718037783444

  • Anyone get these to work with Windows XP SP3?
Just got one last week and it BSODs every time I plug it in.

    • Start your PC in safe mode and try troubleshooting in Computer Management, uninstall / re-install the drivers for the disk drive and USB mass storage.

If that doesn't work and you had the current XP install for a very long time, might be a good time to backup/format/reinstall XP or upgrade to Win7 unless you have to upgrade hardware.

    • Did you try format the drive and remove any files that were on the hard drive? I know some drives come preloaded with Icon / exe auto-loader files. If you don't need these I'd try format the drive clean and see if it works that way.

    • I got it working. Here is what I did:
I downloaded and installed the latest WD SES driver (from the WD support site) for My Passport, but it did not solve the problem

I couldn't make out the details of the BSOD screen, so I checked on the WD Community boards and, finding nothing that applied, I called WD tech support. They suggested sending a refurb via RMA. I told them I would let them know later, after I tried something else.

I got out my video camera and started recording the screen. I plugged in the Passport drive (while in windows.) Windows did BSOD and I got the screen on video so I could read the message.

The pertinent info was a problem with the file DKTLFSMF.SYS which I googled and found to be a driver in Diskeeper 12.

I uninstalled Diskeeper 12 and the BSOD problem was solved and the Passport is working.
