HP Pavilion 14-B062TU i5-3317u 14" Notebook $496 @ Officeworks

610

This notebook appears about $100 less than on other sites, has a 3rd gen i5-3317u cpu. It's lightweight but not quite an ultrabook. Don't see many 3rd gen i5 laptops available at under $500. Two colors available: red-14-B062TU and black 14-B030TU.

Similar model (with 500Gb drive and 6Gb memory) gets good reviews on Amazon:

The only problem with this laptop is it only comes with WIN 8. If you need to do productive work in a competitive environment then avoid WIN 8. (For web surfing and email its almost as good as Win 7.)

  • HDD: 1Tb (5400Rpm) Hard Drive

  • nice find!

  • Battery ?

    • +23

      A couple of AAA's

      • at least it is easy to stock up on discounted AAA's from ozbargain when going on a road trip for extended computer access

    • Thanks, don't mind if I do.

  • Battery goes for 2.5 hours. 3 hours if you manage well.
Thank god mine is a different model. I almost fainted looking at the price.
    Good find

  • this appears to be a good buy - except for the lack of a 6 cell battery and (not really important) a dvd drive - perhaps for backing up data. great processor though.

any alternatives people are aware of?

  • Noob question; Any reason this couldn't take a ssd?

    • +2

No reason that I can think of. Would pump up the battery life and quickness at the cost of maybe $200? Pop the included drive in a USB enclosure for extra storage, too. That would still beat the prices on Samsung's 13" and HP's 14" Envy series that have hybrid drives. (MSY has them for $759 and $799.)

Here's the service manual at HP (big PDF file)

      http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManu…

It details the procedure to reach to the hard drive. Looks like it's just a standard SATA drive under the keyboard.

    • +1

You can install a SSD yourself
It isn't too bad. But it isn't that easy either as you will have to take off the keyboard first then top cover of the bottom part. Then you can see the existing HDD.

      Upgrading the ram? PAINFUL!

      • Thought so, thanks. Don't mind pulling it apart (though I'm guessing that would void the warranty?) just that technology has changed a bit since I last did this sort of thing…

        • lol

you have to pull the board out to upgrade memory!

  • +3

Good price but small capacity battery and ULV CPU is ~20% less powerful than mobile CPU

    Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50GHz 3841 (Passmark CPU Mark)
    Intel Core i5-3317U @ 1.70GHz 3124 (Passmark CPU Mark)

    • well, unless if you do very computer intensive work the processor sounds fine to me.

  • +2

    Networking/Wireless: Integrated 10/100Base-T Ethernet Lan?

  • would the 5400rpm hard drive be too slow?

    • I have a 5400rpm 1tb hdd on my Dell XPS 15. Gosh, the worst drive ever. Invest in a ssd if can afford.

    • went from a 5400rpm drive to a ssd yday… wow

      • I've always thought the best approach is to move out the dvd drive put it in an external case and replace it with something like a 60-240gb SSD depending on budget. I mean most people don't even use DVDs these days. I don't think my PC or even my DVD player have seen any action for about 6 months.

  • This has been the price for a while. Mate of mine bought one 2 weeks ago. Good buy

  • +3

Was checking this out yesterday at OW and tempted to buy. However there are a few cons (well at least for me anyway):

    1. The ULV i5 is performing just similar to i3-3110M
    2. The HD 4000 will surfer from the 17W TPD envelop and single channel ddr 3. You can check out the scaling at notebookcheck.com. yes you can throw $30 for another 4G 1600 but that's $30 and a lot of manual work.
    3. You cannot add a secondary ssd
    4. Not to confuse with Envy 14 this is all plastic

Very good price for the spec and size regardless.

    • +1

I agree with everything aside from disparaging the i3-3110M. I have one in my laptop and it's more than adequate for multi-tasking/surfing/word processing/playing massive .MKV files. I've even ran stuff like Diablo 3, Starcraft II and Unreal 3.0 Engine games on here very well on medium-low settings.

As long as this i5-3317u is actually on par with a 3110M; then this is an awesome price for it.

    • I am not disparaging the i3. It's definitely more than enough for your everyday needs. I stated that in case people think "wow it's an i5 and it's gonna blow you away".

      1. You can put up to 16GB of RAM
      2. You CAN add another SSD via mSata interface located near the memory module
      3. It's metal for the bottom case and plastic for the rest
how do I know? I bought it and disassembled it as soon as I got home

      http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03590565.pdf

got it for $450 since it's a customer return

wont neg but not a fan of this. I got a HP DV6 with 2gb Nvidia and 750 gb hdd for $394 at dicksmith last month. but its only a 2nd gen i5. still runs every game I have thrown at it including Tomb Raider and Dead Space 3 on high settings.

    • You got a nice deal on that one. I'm not looking for a notebook like this one either, wanting more cpu power and a better gpu, but the deal looked decent for others to me.

    • is it still available?

      • $499 now

        • is there a link? i couldn't find it on the site

        • Sorry, I was looking at the wrong model. http://dicksmith.com.au/Product/XC8554/HP-Pavilion-M61009TX looks ok though.

        • No stock anywhere

        • Still in stock in my area (Perth).

        • None available in Queensland. (The one showing in inventory is a broken floor model in Robina store.)

    • Just so you know a graphics card can have 1TB of RAM and still be a poor performer. We really need to know the model number.

  • Is this good enough for a first year uni student ?

    • It's sufficient enough for office work. Lack of a 6 cell battery means you will need to bring a charger though, at most you will get around 3.5 hours on a 4 cell.

      Porn should be fine.

Went to my local ow Ferntree Gully and they were clearing these out http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Com… for $399. Missed out on a brand new one by 10 minutes. They only had a floor model left when I got there.

    http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/39370/15435/image.jpg

    • there seems to be stock in the other stores, will the different stores have the same clearance offers?

      • Maybe down the track, but I rang half a dozen stores and they were all selling them at full price.

  • Didnt have good experience with a few Hp laptops..they were quite hot during full load comparing to Asus and Acer, and a few other issues as well. But this is a good price!

    • I've got a super hot Acer, just poorly designed.
HP I've found have a tendency to break hinges.

  • Just bought one as a gift.
Anyone know if Microsoft Office 2010 Starter is just a trial version? if so then i'll have to rip open the box and install something else.

    • I'm pretty sure it's word and excel.

    • +1

It's pretty lame - reduced screen size and feature set + adverts. I think it's deliberately designed to frustrate users so they'll upgrade. The FULL MS Office suite comes pre-installed on a locked partition of the hard drive, for whenever you succumb.

  • +1

For those that are a bit hard up for money don't worry as this is their new everyday low price.

  • +1

Not buying another HP lappy. Black screen of death memories linger on.

  • Ended up getting it for $471 and got a $19 wireless mouse thrown in for free thanks to the awesome bloke who served me.

  • Performance wise how does this one compare with Toshiba Satellite C850 PSCBXA-010005. MSY selling it for $499.

  • You should change your ordering process. Most people can't be bothered to put in their billing information unless they know how much it will cost. I was going to buy one but honestly I can't be bothered going through hassle just to get a shipping quote. Have a look at PcCaseGear they have a much better website.

  • Priced Matched with WA Computers today. No questions asked. Got it for $457. Since WA Computers don't offer pickups, Officeworks will only beat WA Computers Price + Shipping and then 5% after that.
