  • would it be ok to add an extra 4 GB ECC Ram to a current 2 GB HP N40L?

    • +1

Yes, you do not need to take out the existing 2GB ram.

      • What about mixing ecc and non ecc ram?

        • +1

Might still working, but not recommended.

        • +1

          thanks :D

        • you're welcome :)

        • +1

Not sure about other people's experiences.

A friend added a 4gb non ecc with the included 2gb ecc and the server would not boot.

        • +2

Non-ECC RAM is officially not supported on this server… but works for most people.

However as others have said, I probably wouldnt mix ECC & non-ECC RAM.

  • $2.75 dearer than Flingshot's weekend 10% off sale on the N54l, but still pretty good overall.

    • +2

Easy. Revised to $259 + Shipping now

      • +3

Another reason why I shop with you guys regularly!

        • thanks :). We will have some interesting upcoming events, so be sure to keep an eye on them too.

        • try something like USB hard drives, USB flash drives too? also portable laptop?
not sure what else Ozbargainer like… :P

  • Hi rep,

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this.

What are the differences btw this microserver and a "powerful" modern desktop? (I mean in term of performance as I see its specs is not very strong)

This microserver's price is so cheap compared to a normal powerful desktop.

    Thanks,

    • +1

:). Lower power consumption for what it's been used for is one of the great part of it. However, for more details on the benefits, I leave it to the MicroServer Fans.

    • +1

Generally you would use one of these for a media server/htpc/nas. you could even get away with light web/email use. The low power consumption(~25w, depends on configuration) makes them ideal for 24/7 use.

While you could run windows 7/8 performance would be very poor for everyday use, most times you would use a server operating system.

Any chance you will stock Intel Nuc barebone boxes in the future?

    • +1

Possible. Will this be a good place for us to offload deals on them?

      • Well I would be interested, but cant speak for the community ;)

      • Certainly interested. Especially if the offer includes mSATA storage options.

      • Would definitely be interested in a deal on the NUCs - both the celeron and i3 versions.

  • now the question is, is the extra for the N54L worth it over the N40L?

    • Faster CPU is the main difference, the N40L comes with a 250gb disk whereas the N54L comes diskless. I would probably go the N54L.

      • is the 54l noisier?

        • +2

I think their dBA levels are very similar.

        • thanks.

    • +2

is the extra for the N54L worth it over the N40L?

IMHO, the short answer is no! The CPU speed increase alone is not sufficient enticement for an upgrade.

Putting the $50 difference toward more RAM & possibly PCIe GPU (for HTPC use) would be a more effective use of the money IMHO…

  • Any chance you do WD Red on its own?

    • Well factoring in delivery I would say Shopping Express pretty much have the best price on the net ATM, even without the $5 bundling discount.

  • will the Gigabyte Geforce GT 210 be enough grunt to put in the N40L and use it as a htpc to play 1080p mkvs? (running xbmc on linux)

    • +1

Easily. I used to have a GT 210 in my htpc running MythTV and a 1080p mkv would use about 8% CPU - the 210 handled the load without a problem.

      • cheers.

  • Hi Rep. Have you performed any in-house testing of the N54L with 16GB RAM configurations? If so:

    1. which modules work?
    2. could they be included in the offer?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Can confirm that G.Skill Ares 16gb DDR3 1333 kit from MSY ($103) works fine in my N54L and shows up correctly.

      http://msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8837

      • +1

Cheers for the tip. Comments in the N40L wiki suggest the G.Skill Ares modules are only recognised intermittently. But I'd be inclined to take the word of an established OB'er over a complete unknown.

    • Unfortunately, we have not performed any in house testing on 16GB Ram configurations. As they are not officially announced to support 16GB ram - we can't comment further on recommendations, except to refer to the link provided by Stefce as a guide and search through related topics on whirlpool for more information.

      Kind Regards
      Shopping Express

      • Thanks for the reply. I completely understand not being able to endorse unofficial parts. Any chance of a deal on the Kingston 16GB kit I linked to above?

  • Hey op, any chance of this again http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/95683 but only cheaper? :)

    • +1

Yeah they were very good prices, I took advantage of them last week! Thumbs up for future Samsung SSD deals!!

    • Cost of SSDs went up - however we will try our best to bring similar deals back soon.

  • Can it handle 4TB hard drives?
    Any thoughts on Synology DS412+

    • +2

I believe they can, just not as the boot drive.

  • rep, does the n54l come with 2gb or 4gb ram?
in description it says 2gb but in extras it says you can buy a 4gb matching pair

    • I believe it is 2GB with the 4GB matching pair cost $44. The original post has this information.

  • Is this product suitable to play 1080p without issues? I was planning to build an HTPC just for movies + music + internet at home but this looks very good.

  • I have the N54L running as NAS and streaming movies/tv with PS3MS, it's great! But be warned this is no powerhouse server and will not do well if you try and have it transcode the video in real time (aka, have your video in renderer friendly formats).

But honestly highly recommend it excellent little product :D especially when configured properly! ;)

  • Been pondering this purchase for a while, finally bit the bullet. Cant wait for it to arrive!
