Todays Dell discount has an i7 (2Ghz-3.1Ghz, 17watt), full HD, discrete 2gb mid-range gpu, with 8Gb Ram and 1Tb HD for $849. Found no previous sale on this config, but price looks good vs other brands at other vendors. Should have better battery life with 17watt ULV cpu.

  • Hmm, pretty sure those standard Dell 1080p screens are average at best. Otherwise a good price. Battery life looks good - up to 7hrs internet browsing, should be even better if DIY SSD.

    • Yeh was just wondering about the fact that it doesnt state Ultrasharp… so it's a different panel?

  • looks good huhuhuhu , too bad we dont need one :(

Interesting. It's the first 8 series AMD GPU I've seen. Seems decent enough, especially for an ~$850 price tag. Definitely not enough to drive 1080p gaming though (for recent/new games at least).

FYI: You've got a mistype in your title for the GPU (it says 8370 rather than 8730).

Edit: Also, it should be noted that the i7-3537U is only a dual core processor, despite being an i7.

    • Thanks for spotting that typo. (Lazy fingers sometimes;^) Corrected now.

  • 10/100 fast Ethernet port only! Geez

    • yeah was tempted when i saw this yesterday but 100Mbps port is a deal breaker !

I don't really get this. What are you transferring regularly that you're going to be majorly affected by 100MBps vs 1000MBps with just a 5,400 rpm HDD?

        • -1

          It's quite simple really:

          12.5MB/s (100Mbps) < 75.8MB/s
          125MB/s (1000Mbps) > 75.8MB/s

75.8MB/s was the slowest (can assume Dell won't put anything decent in) average write speeds from: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2012-mobile-hdd-charts/-0…

Have fun waiting six times longer. * Obviously not taking into account network overheads (TCP, MTU, etc) when transferring :)

        • And just how often are you transferring massive amounts of data across your network in situations when it's time critical?

And FWIW, I use a 10/100 connection to my file server with > 5TB of data that I transfer to/from regularly. It's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be, and I still don't get why people would say it's a deal breaker.

And just how often are you transferring massive amounts of data across your network in situations when it's time critical?

All the time. Continuous backups and read/write video/photo assets. Then my little NAS handles the backup to cloud storage bit. Some people have different needs.

FWIW, I use a 1Gbps connection to my home NAS which has two 1000Gbps port trunked with jumbo frames. Bring on 10GE for home use and NBN.

I didn't even know you could still get 10/100 NIC in new laptops that aren't just some USB to NIC implementation.

        • Actually I have much the same needs and use with my file server - backups with storing photos & videos then uploading to cloud storage. 10/100 is fine for that.

  • Notebookcheck link shows the 8730 is 8% slower than the 7730? That's disappointing.

  • Note that this is the new Inspiron 15, not the Inspiron 15R Special Edition.

    • ULV i7 CPU (vs. full voltage one in 15R SE)
    • 100Mbps ethernet (vs 1Gbps)
    • HD 8730 (vs 7730)

Too bad it's not currently on sale. For gaming laptops, I think the current Inspiron 17R SE on sale might be a better buy:

    • 17.3" FHD
    • 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD
    • NVIDIA GT 650M 2GB — that would be faster than both Radeon HD 8730 & 7730.
    • $979

Maybe someone wants to post that :)

  • Lately they are not giving any option to change the hard drive to ssd? I wonder why, if the customer is willing to pay for it :(

    • Why does this matter?
Its usually much more cost effective to buy your own SSD on special, then either use the original hard drive as a replacement for the optical drive or in an external USB3 case.
