Dick Smith All Blu-Rays $5 Individual / $20 Box Sets

2480

Went into Dick Smith to pick up this deal http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/97320 and found they have all blu-rays $5 individual movies and $20 blu-ray box sets.

Obviously I spent more than I intended.
Grind house box set, predator collection, ultimate gangster collection were some of the box sets as well as quite a few individual movies.

I could easily have spent $150 but stopped myself at $75.

Edit:
Credit where credit is due, g12345567 originally posted this in a comment of the Band of Brothers/The Pacific deal, I didn't see that comment before posting this.

    that's great when it's 15km away and I'm stuck at work…..
oh well hav to go after work and hope for the best……

  • Bugger all stock at Dapto but Wollongong had quite a few left. Really wanted X-Men First Class and the Tarantino box but neither store had em so I ended up with Predator trilogy and Terminator 2 instead. Grindhouse was tempting too. They had that at both the above mentioned stores. Also at Wollongong: Die Hard box, Shaun of the Dead, Night At The Museum just to name a few.

  • Not many at Helensvale Queensland but still had a few ( I'd say about 40 ) few good ones

    • Yeah, I picked up BOB/pacific box set. Shriek box set and Tarrentino box set.
Also got independents day, night of the museum 1&2, fast and furious,

      • +1

Lol, Independents day: the story of how Robb Oakeshott and Tony Windsor formed a government!

  • +3

Guys just a tip but when you go to the store don't just look at what's on display and call it a day. Happened at DSE Toowoomba. C/B grade movies on offer. I go talk to the guy at front and he goes to the back and pulls out epic movies/boxsets. Just a recommendation that you talk to whoever's on counter.

  • whew! got Batman begins ($5) and the Magnificent 7 boxed set for only $5 too!! for the M7 it said the original price was $49! at Wynnum Qld, thanks OP!

  • You're a legend OP. Picked up 18 of my favourites.

      well done…I paid $95 for LOTR 1,2,3 in 2010

      • They wouldn't be extended, however. So not a crazy price but still good for AU stock.

  • Got Grindhouse (amongst others) from Chirnside park (Vic). Mine came from out back but there was another on display. Approx 25 loose titles & 5 box sets (very small store).

  • https://plus.google.com/u/0/111655505289993607429/posts <- Got my good selection from 3 different stores :)

$125 later! I Have also just noticed I doubled up on American Gangsta! :( as it is included in the box set

    • Holy crap!

I don't know whether to go check out Garden City for stock or not.. I might not bother, bit of a drive and I'm guessing they'd be out of alot of things.

    • Nice score.

  • +1

Heaps of blu rays left at Innaloo WA, at least four copies of The Godfather trilogy and one or two of the Tarantino collection when I left about ~30 minutes ago.

  • I saw a couple found a big paper box and have it full of blur-ray. Should enough for them to watch the whole year.

  • Cheers OP. Just got: X men box set, Jumper, Taken, Step Brothers, Shaun of the dead, I am legend, the book of Eli, Rock n rolla, crank & gamer.

    • Is the X-MEN Boxset in DTS-HD?

  • Bought a huge stash. Also managed to bag a "sundry set" for $10 - 5 blu rays bundled together. I got Casino Royale, Open Season, Black Hawk Down, Ghost Rider, and Rambo Reloaded basically for $2 each. All DVD sets were $5, all DVD's were $2, all CD's were $2.

  • Nothing at Carindale, QLD aside from a few crappy movies and a couple of movies that you'd get in boxsets anyway ie. F&F, LoTR, Matrix, Die Hard.

    No box sets. :(

  • got x-men quadrilogy, star wars the better trilogy, kick-ass and inglourious basterds !
Could've gotten heaps more but passed on it

  • Toombul in Qld has a pretty good stock.

  • Thanks!

  • Called my local store, got the staff member to put all the harry potter they had aside for me, surprisingly they had all of them and they were there for me to pick up.. Bargain price

  • Tons and tons left at Dick Smith Erina… a whole shelf display plus 2 huge clearance bins… pretty much everything everyone has mentioned here, available in multiple copies… plus Shrek box sets, Mummy Box Set, tons of predator box sets, magnificent 7 box sets, Grindhouse box, Minority Report box sets, Lethal Weapon box sets sets etc… No Star Wars though which is what I really wanted :(

    I ended up getting
    X-Men First Class
    Kung Fu Panda 2
    Hangover 2
    Fast and the Furious 1 & 3
    Conan 3D
    Rio
    Casino Royale
    Qantum of Solace
    Monsters & Aliens
    Incredible Hulk
    Justin Timberlake Live

They also have tons of DVDs for $2

Worth a trip for anyone in the area (If the sale is still going tomorrow that is, too late for tonight!)

  • +1

not much left at Glen Waverley (vic) lol..
Picked up a couple of scraps that were left over

the people working had some good stories of customers buying up to $250 in movies. no doubt was one of you bastards on here =P

    • thanks for saving me a trip, planned to check there tomorrow just incase

    • …Sorry mate. But in my defence I only got $50 worth ;)

    • Only got $70 so it wasn't me

  • Awesome deal, but no stock for any of the movies/sets I picked. Better luck next time :-)

  • Got the matrix, two movies that don't exist, the book of eli, die hard 4.0 and more.

Main score was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 in 3D only $5 for both

    • Movies that don't exist? The Matrix sequels? Or Star Wars prequels?

      • lol, its a clear reference to the matrix sequels, much like the lion king movie, see what i did there?

        • +1

Heh, well, we prefer to pretend that the Star Wars and Star Trek prequels don't exist either.

Also, your name just reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lHgbbM9pu4

IT'S A FAAAKE!! Now I need to go watch those episodes again…

        • Yep those ones ;)

The ones I omitted were Final Destination and Step Brothers.

My blu ray collection is now in the hundreds now :)

  • Ended up with 20 movies for $85 so I'm pretty happy about that. 7 of those were in 1 box set.

  • +3

Can someone please tell me the obsession with Grindhouse? It's two movies so at that stage it should be $10? They're mediocre? Coulda picked it up today but seeing as they're average movies at $20 I couldn't justify it. Someone please explain?

    • Yeah, I couldn't figure this out as well. Not the best movies…

      • Terrible but true.

    • Guess it depends on taste.
I think these two movies were great. It came in a nice box set with mini movie posters and an extras disc. I would rather have only paid $10 though.
Same could be said about The Predators set as it's 3 movies it should only be $15.

On the other hand almost everyone in the world thinks that Avatar is the best movie in history, people on ebay were paying up to $200 for the 3D blu-ray while it was only available with certain TVs. Given the choice I'd rather be set on fire than sit through it again.

      • The same can be said about the Mummy and Jurassic Park box sets since they are also only 3 movies. As well as the Grindhouse box set containing only 2 movies.

On the other hand the ultimate gangster movie box set is good value. 5 movies for $4 each.

        • but then you get people like me that are more than happy to pay $20 to see rachel weisz in blu ray no matter if she isnt in the 3rd movie lol

  • +3

Someone already trying to brodened them on ebay:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/testafamily/m.html?_uhb=1&hash=it…

  • +1

OK, I normally get box sets for blu rays form Amazon .. but grabed a coup of movies form Dicks - did anyone else get home an have a red / green lock on the case in the thumb / latch area - seems to be a security tag and I'm concerned I'd damage the case trying to open it. First time I have seen this… sigh.

    • I had 2 that were locked when I got home, I have 2 nice magnets that I use to open them without damaging the case. If you do a quick search on google for "how to open locked blu-ray case" there are a number of videos that will show you how to do it, some use magnets, some use pins.

      • +2

If you don't have any strong magnets. I have use the two sewing needles method in the past to push down on either side of the magnet clip. Then used a sharp implement such as a pen knife to slide the clip over to the unlock position.

    • +1

We have these where I work, the device to unlock them uses magnets that it swipes past to unlock the internal mechanism.

If you have a couple of strong magnets handy, this guide shows you how to unlock it:
      http://www.instructables.com/id/Opening-Locked-DVD-Cases-The…

Don't try and force it open or you'll end up destroying the case.

      • I don't really… I have a set of 50 3mm rare earth magnet magnets (was modding a board game pieces) but they are not strong enough for this - I don't even feel tension or pull when wiping them past.

Guess I'll have to go back on Saturday to get them unlocked.

    • +1

You will damage the case trying to force the security lock. You need a strong magnet to open it, if I remember correctly there are a couple of ball bearings that push down on some tabs that allow it to slide. You only have to do it once and it stays unlocked on the case from then on. Either take it back to the point of sale, they should have the proper equipment and experience to do it for you, or you can try with a strong magnet, hopefully you have a large neodymium/rare earth magnet lying around at home.

      • I agree you should take any locked blu-rays back to DS. The guy there said they forget to unlock them as they don't regularly sell all that many. He only checked mine as an afterthought.

  • Black Swan $5
    Saving Private Ryan $5
    Godfather Trilogy Boxset $20

Five great movies, and one okay one, for $30. Very happy.

  • +7

This is a pretty strong message to the movie studios, distributors and retailers… Sell a movie once for $30 or sell it 20 times at $5. It's quite clear that people (on ozb anyways) are quite willing to pay for their movies. Just not at exorbitant rates.

  • +2

I pretty much raped the Northern suburbs of S.A

Ingle Farm - Had a good selected still
North park - Had a few good ones left as well
City - Dont bother can get at all other stores
    Elizabeth - Very poor selection
Golden Grove - Again nothing left
Hollywood Plaza - Again had what all other stores had

MAKE SURE THEY UNLOCK THEM AS THE IDIOT AT THE CITY STORE DID NOT AND HAD TO GET THEM ALL UNLOCKED AT NORTHPARK

I got around 50 movies and 8-10 box sets :)

  • -1

PS didnt go to Tea Tree Plaza but the guy at Ingle Farm said they didnt have much so didnt bother

As most said employees got all the good ones.

  • FYI The North Sydney store manager says there is a limit of 5 discs per person in this store.

  • +1

^^^^ Really thats crap i was buying 10-15 at some stores

    • +1

Yes I made a complaint to the manager and the dse feedback email. I get the guys point he wants to try and get more customers in to maybe buy other goods to increase the stores profit. I guess if it comes down to closing stores in the future the stores which dont make as much money as others will be the 1st to go. In this case this is also then unfair to the other stores which are not on the same playing field.

  • Good bargain find, Highpoint, VIC only has about 20 left, located in corner of the store.
The Mummy Set, Magnificent 7 Set, Matrix, Predator Vs Alien.
Also have some PS3 games on clearance

  • +1

Went to DSE at Syd George St this morning as first customer, didn't find any good titles, all the box sets are gone, there are few harry potter lefts, 10000bc, day after tomorrow, lethal weapon 1.

It's saddening that some brodens bought these to be resold on ebay, those that want to watch and keep the movies will miss out.

    • They also had some near the entrance….. silence of the lambs was there and heat at 9pm last night….and some other titles… a few of each

    • The web site said they have X-Men First Class but when I called them they said they have 3 copies but they couldn't locate it.

  • Nothing at Chatswood. In fact they didn't seem aware of it. They had a couple of blus in a bin, for $10 a piece. Weird. (mag 7 single, transporter 2, dragon tattoo).

  • +2

Yeah i have seen a number on ebay already. I emailed them and said nice little profit your making lol

    • they making profit if people are actually buying from them. and why would you pay $90 for a predator trilogy that you knew its only $20 the day before, alhough you missed out, you'll wait for next bargain.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alien-Predator-Blu-Ray-Collection…

      • lol a lot of ppl who shop on ebay would not even be aware of the sale…..let alone you will find a lot of ppl on ebay have no idea about viewing completed listings and will buy something for heaps more than what sold the previous day for half the amount.

        • +2

people buying online are not completely stupid though, they know how to use google and most would do a little research and would find either the JB site or this page on OB

Best of luck to the people selling on ebay, it's free to list so no sweat off their back if it doesn't sell. I'm sure we've all done something similar

    • +2

That's so lame, I mean every shop and business on earth does exactly the same thing. If someone makes a few extra bucks from making the effort of going to the shops to find the good sets, then who cares. A Tarantino set for $40 still sure beats the $95 that JB are charging.

      • Every shop and business on earth does that to pay the rent fees, staff fees, etc. Brodens on ebay do that for personal private gains and caused others who like to buy and watch for themselves to missed out.

DSE should have limit 1 copy for each title per customer.

        • +1

There are only going to be so many to go around at these prices. Someone will miss out.

I rather like the idea that the $20 profit I paid went to some regular person probably to put food on the table, than some fat cat executives salary. I buy regularly on eBay from small sellers for this exact reason.

Reselling on eBay for a few bucks profit isn't a CRIME. It's when you are a douche about it like Broden was.

        • +1

G Harvey & D Smith would be very upset to hear that. They also need big fat cat profit to make them even richer. I don't disagree with small timer making profit on ebay, but if he/she bought all the copies of tarantinos or rockys on dick's shop then that would be broden allright, didn't give a chance for the next buyer.

        • How do you know brodens are not from JB who pays rent?

      • It only bothers me when people use deals posted here and use the selling forum to rip off those that missed out, but the first seller listed above went a little overboard in asking price (not that it bothers me, just my opinion)

  • Still about 100 titles at North Lakes

  • +1

    Very little left at Northpark.
    Plenty at Arndale.
A fair few at West Lakes.
A fair few left at Glenelg also

  • Got some from Capalaba QLD. Not a great selection. Shrek box set, night at the museum 1 and 2. dvds are only 2 bucks. Only got Deathly Hallows part 2. Anyone got a spare part 1 in bluray?

  • +1

Damn i want to go to Arndale and Westlakes

Yeah i cleaned NorthPark out last night

  • The DSE website had two blurays for $5 each you could buy so i grabbed them. Post was $4.95

      • +2

nah, he bought it all :)

      • Not heaps left at malvern, a few things, limited selection, they had die hard and Mission impossible sets this morning, but may be gone now.
My father started getting some things for himself, he managed to get Bourne set and also picked up sons of anarchy season 1 and 2. Haven't found 3 as yet though.

        • There were quite a few 'taken's at the pines doncaster if you can be bothered driving. Just got back from there.

  • I think I have to wait for JB buy 1 get 1 free or from UK for the X-Men First Class.

I saw it on day one and didn't buy it, what I am doing @.@

  • All the greedy people on Ebay may actually be doing us a favour. Some are selling at cost price with free delivery. Now there's a bargain!

    • Link? I might grab those too. But they really doing a charity as the postage might cost more than $5 for each parcel.

      • Mightyape have the X-Men First Class Steelbook for $12 + around $5 postage.

  • +1

Adelaide City store dont have much left maybe 15

Norwood have a good selection still available.

  • Thanks for the tip. Got everything i wanted (8 in all). Still plenty left, to - Karingal.

  • The Newcastle West store still had quite a few titles when I was in there today.

  • -4

Placed a click & collect, rang the store and he said they are ignoring all click & collect orders!!!
They have had hundreds and this would involve getting them off the shelf to put them aside! No kidding - perhaps it would give all the staff wandering around something to do! Anyway, he said they still had the DVD I wanted but I would have to search for it (they wouldn't find it for me) - the DVD section was such a mess I gave up. Any they wonder why these big retailers are losing business?

    • It's been made pretty clear that they weren't doing click & collect.

  • Heaps at innaloo wa. Mission impossible, grindhouse, shrek, bourne, marvel, xmen quad boxsets and plenty of single disc blurays

    • Sweet, I was thinking of heading down tomorrow and see what was left.

  • Cleaned up - thanks!!

  • Finally went to BigW price matched X Men first class for $5 because Sydney City store still show have stock but actually they are not.

  • Thanks OP, great sale! I picked up Die Hard and Rocky box sets and Sons of Anarchy S1 and S2 at Dubbo store today. I had called the store yesterday to ask if they had SOA (as it said Low Stock on website), and they told me no. Pays to look! Not much left there, just a few single titles.
