  • Help me out here. Now this needs to be plugged in to AC, right? So you need a transformer, right? Didn't someone say on the now deleted Amazon waterpik post that a transformer won't fix the frequency (50hz/60hz) problem and things could blow up?

    • Why was the waterpik post deleted?

Anyway I haven't seen this drive in particular, but all the ones I've seen come with switchmode power supplies, so the 50/60Hz problem is not an issue. You won't need a transformer, just a simple plug converter at the wall end.

      • It was 110V/60Hz only, someone said they got one and used it a stepdown tranny which fixed the voltage but it was still running at 50Hz which apparently still resulted in damage.

        • Ahh ok. It shouldn't damage it though, it should just run 20% slower. Oh well!

        • Seriously?

        • yeah … (we were talking about the waterpik btw)

    • It comes with a 110/220V plugpack but it will probably have a US style connector | | instead of our / \ type. It may well come with switchable plugs too, I can't remember if my last lot did or not, thinking about it I think they may have.

If not you can just bend the pins with pliers but you risk cracking the plastic of the casing doing so.

  • +1

Or you could wait a few weeks for Officeworks to come out with something very similar with proper local support.

Seems silly to risk your storage for saving a few bucks on dodgy power supplies.

    • The power supplies are probably identical. Have a look at a locally-purchased one, it'll say 100-240V 50/60Hz.

      • You're assuming that what we receive in Aus is the same as what is made for the US market.

I check, you're free to buy what you like. The electrical connection pins are different, likely the PSU's are as well.

You're assuming what is sold in the US is different to what is sold here.

The last backup drive I bought here came with worldwide power plugs for its adaptor. The adaptor is exactly the same, it's just the pins that go on that are different.

        • This is my recollection now too, presumably they do this so they can just ship the same SKU anywhere in the world knowing it'll work.

        • yeah, I guess it makes sense to have one production line producing one product, rather than multiple production lines producing several different packages whose only difference is the pins on the power plug. The manuals are multi-language already anyway.
