  • How does this compare to the cheaper Seagate Barracuda 3TB SATA 7200rpm 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST3000DM001 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/97349
Seagate Barracuda 3TB SATA 7200rpm 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST3000DM001

    • The WD Red drives are designed for home NAS boxes, they combine the durability of an AV or Enterprise drive with the green credentials of the WD Green

The Barracuda is a normal desktop drive, ie it is not specifically built to be on 24x7, so when used in a NAS or RAID box they are more likely to fail than a WD RED (so marketing tells us). I use WD RED drives in my NAS box but they are a bit more expensive.

WD reds are just greens with different firmware. WD reds arent that reliable there is a rather large thread on Hard forum filled with complaints about WD reds dying within weeks of ownership. Ive got 20 of the ST3000DM001's so far only 1 has come up with relocated sectors, not bad with over 1 year of constant use.

So in other words if you spend $1610, you get a free $7 mouse… awesome!

Whoever hits $150 for this drive will get my business.

    • Ditto. Been holding back to buy - need 3 drives. But, this def worth a plus - the best shipped price at the moment.
