Zoolz: Free 100GB Cloud Backup for The First 1,000,000 Users $0

571

Zoolz is the first service to offer free 100GB of durable backup without any limitations and to leverage Amazon AWS technology in an intuitive way to provide easy backup, instant data view, image preview, and search to access and restore archived data with ease.

Cold Storage. Built on top of Amazon Glacier storage infrastructure, it is meant for backing up rarely accessed files that don’t need frequent updating. It is designed for archiving purpose and the cost is very low, although there is 3-5 hours delay in restoration. But for backed up photos, you can preview them without having to wait.

The website is being OzBargained as we speak. It just won't load. :P

      • +1

This is retarded. Please neg this above^ comment to save other OZBs the time I just wasted.

All it does is waste your time downloading and installing the app first (which you may never use if you don't get the deal) and then takes you to the original exact same web site for sign up from the OP anyway.

        • +2

agreed, unsure of benefit of above. Took me to website anyway.

  • looks promising…

    • +2

Promising. But I'm wondering how long they can maintain the servers to store 100 petabytes of data with no income.

      • Ugh, they're just throwing it on AWS. Amazon already has the data centres for it.

Plus they just seem to be reselling it with a fancy interface on top. You can upgrade to 500GB of storage for $10 a month, but get it for $5/month from Amazon directly. Plus, at Amazon you only pay for what you use. ie. 375GB = $3.75/month whereas this is $10/month for /up to/ 500GB.

        • Its stored on the amazon glacier service which is virtually free to save initially to but very very very expensive to retrieve from, potentially far in excess of the amounts mentioned here, google it. This software looks like it protects you from this issue by throttling the amount of data you can retrieve overtime. Block based backup rather file based for long term and rarely accessed data is its target. Looks like it based on the excellent genie timeline product.

        • +2

Well it is promising indeed… I've been reading many comments here stating that Amazon and Glacier in particular is cheaper and more worthy of download. Well, being in the Cloud industry I must share my knowledge and say that though Zoolz does incorporate the technology but adds a lot of features that are not available on Glacier since Glacier is a basic raw Amazon technology that cannot be taken as it is for end users to enjoy. 100GB of Cold Storage is very handy for those who do not need instant retrieval of data, and even their business client is not so expensive. So I don't know about you, but I'm sold…

        • Any ideas how much venture capital they have?

  • Took some time but it loaded and had to give them my email and just waiting for the email back now.

Don't know what I'll use it for just yet, but better to have it anyway :)

  • HTTP Error 503 (Service Unavailable): The server is currently unable to handle the request. This code indicates this is a temporary condition, and the server will be up again after a delay.

  • +2

"The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy…"
Who needs a storage that you can't get access to?

  • +2

"Cold Storage. Built on top of Amazon Glacier storage infrastructure" it's melting…

  • still waiting their email. not sure am i too late. sigs

  • now the signup is not instant.

Need to register your email and wait for the invitation email probably …. still waiting.

  • Will have to wait 3 - 5 hours to get a link to download files you uploaded…

  • Well… I don't petsonally use cloud service as I don't trust them but anyway good for ppl who needs it & use them. Great deal though

    • I wouldn't upload my passport or anything else sensitive.. but can still find tons of uses for 100gb :)

Was in Hardly Normal today and they had those cloud netbooks or whatever you call them running on Chrome.. and next to it was some video demo/pitch of how great it is.. all your data is on the cloud.. soo convenient…pc never gets slow or out of date.. yay for the cloud! laaadidaa.. Can just see all those trendies (as Alex Jones would say) lining up to buy one

      • No one is gonna upload sensitive information (like passport or s/th like that) but still u would use it to store ur personal files like private pictures or videos or something really important.

        • +1

There's no reason you can't encrypt everything prior to uploading it

"if your computer fails to access the Services to perform a backup for more than thirty (30) days" all your data will be deleted !!

This seems contradictory to the selling point of Long Term storage…

    Free Licenses:
If you have a Free Account, Zoolz may terminate your account and these Terms immediately and without notice if your computer fails to access the Services to perform a backup for more than thirty (30) days or you fail to comply with these Terms. You agree that Zoolz's policy is to automatically delete all of your Backed-up Data upon termination or expiration and that it is solely your responsibility to seek another source for your backup needs. You have also waived rights in receiving Technical support.

    hmm

    • +1

I just got an email from them and got my free gigs, hope all of you will be out of the queue soon :) Cheers

  • Hopefully it doesn't become another Backify..
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55068

    • wow my comment 2 years ago still exists :D

      • Lots of tech startups are starting to fail now.

A lot more new ones are starting up though.

Good news either way, except for the consumer.

  • But not if you are on a Mac. Pfft.

    • If you can afford to pay premium for a picture of an apple, you should be able to afford purchasing cloud storage elsewhere

      • Well I a run Linux and so am in the same boat, except I didn't pay anything for my OS. What about me? :D

  • So far it's been several hours and no email…

  • When I try and sign up it says email already exists…
    Hmmm

  • great offer but yeah wouldn't want it to become another backify

  • Hmm.. It wont let you signup without downloading the program first anymore…

  • Click Sign-In, then click Download Free.
It will prompt you for email address..

    No app download initially required

  • Why does it take so long to receive an email after signing up…
    (Yeah, I'm impatient) :)

    • because it has to travel 500km to your house

      • @billybrown

        more like 5000 Klm ;)

the current tracert has me bouncing all around australia first ( i better go back to college and do networking again) !

        • If you would like a more plausible reason: their mail server is probably overloaded and processing through a queue.

        • Thanks www

12 hours and still no emails…

    • i feel ya

  • +1

i would think twice to upload my personal files to non reputed company/server.

  • Finally I've just received an email from them and downloaded the app and here we go I started to upload my data.
I Thought I wouldn't be able to use it, it's pretty easy to use and simple. Thanks for submitting this deal! :)

  • +1

Still no email after all this time…

If this is the service we will get, its a neg from me about this whole "deal"

    • +2

Totally not worthy of a downvote. Do you have any idea of the hardware and planning it takes to deal with a surge of traffic like this? Be patient.

      • +1

Any idea how easy it for people with expertise in cloud services to ramp up their server resources at little cost for a surge of traffic like this? They have bucket-loads of money and innovation, after all!

        • Depends on their infrastructure set up. Your argument doesn't apply.

  • +2

Very suspicious of this deal. Amazon Glacier storage is a flat US cent per gig per month, meaning that Zoolz are offering up to $1,000,000 worth of storage per month free for the rest of their existence - plus there are significant data transfer and request costs they would incur.
It is not a crime for them to offer this deal and not fulfil it to all one million users, they will get the publicity they seek in any case, and there is no way they could sensibly expose themselves to such expense. Therefore, they won't fulfil this offer… and those people who do get this freebie will need to trust them to look after their data and fulfil the other parts of the offer. OTOH, if they do fulfil this offer, they will go bust and even paying customers may lose data.

    • Percentage of accounts that will ever upload a single byte? Very low. Percentage of accounts that will upload over 5gb? Very low. Percentage of accounts that upload the full 100gb? Minuscule. Amount of people who upgrade to premium? Money coming in.

      • +1

If you don't 'Log in" for 30 days, they will delete everything you uploaded anyway, for a FREE account.

        • +2

          Hence their crafy headline,
          Zoolz: Free 100GB Cloud "Backup" for The First 1,000,000 Users $0;

          Zoo'z 'stor·age' is Mickey Mouse.

        • I don't know why they would delete your files within 30 days.

After 90 days yes, before no.

          From the Glacier Pricing List:

In addition, there is a pro-rated charge of $0.03 per gigabyte for items deleted prior to 90 days. Learn more.

However, I guess they aren't smart enough to calculate that if they keep it for an additional two months, they can delete it at lower cost. $0.02 per gigabyte, rather than pay $0.03 upfront.

As the storage pricing is: $0.01 per GB / month

Gave them my email - they did not respond!

  • On this topic can anyone recommend a cloud service with rsync support?

  • Their FB page: http://www.facebook.com/ZoolzCloud

They seem to stress on accounts being setup on a "first-come, first-served basis"…

  • Hi there,
Congratulations! Your spot has been reserved.

Due to the mass demand on this service and in order to deliver the best backup experience, it might take some time for the service to reach you; we thank you for your patience.

We are filling reservations on a first-come-first served basis and once your turn arrives, we will send you an email with details on how to start using Zoolz.

      • Similar numbers as well
        Another 950K to go

  • You'd certainly hope that the Zoolz client software that you need to run continuously in the background is slightly more elegant than their provisioning system. Would be interesting to hear people's experiences.

  • +2

I'm running it right now. The software is very Windows 8-styled… I quite like it.

Although, it turns out there's a catch with the free service. You have to "Go Premium" in order to unlock a number of pretty useful features, such as more granular control of your backup schedule and file filters.

In any case, it seems great for a freebie thus far.

  • +1

Loved this offer registered a couple of days ago, and currently have uploaded most of my data, will continue to use dropbox for sharing but Zoolz is a great option to set and forged forget and not to worrying about dragging/dropping.

  • +1

Ended up being a scam for me.

Got the email below, but all it does is take you around in circles and tries to trick you into signing up for a free 14 day business trial (which they tell you is unable to be downgraded to a free account). Then it has a link saying if instead you are looking for the free 100GB service click here….. and all it does is take you back to the original free offer link that puts you in the queue again.

    Dodgy unethical Yank business practices.

    Sorry Zoolz, but you suck.

    Hi there,
Congratulations! The wait is over, your Zoolz free 100 GB account is ready.

I had this problem too. Did you follow the instructions posted above about signing up by downloading the app? I think that's where the problem is.
Uninstall everything and re-install following the link you receive in your email and when you click new user, it won't take you to the Zoolz business website. I got it running now.

      • Thank you, it worked.

Will leave my post up in case others have the issue.

Guess this is another site along with mega, wuala, bitcasa, cubby, box, and more to upload my truecrypt files to.

    The market is saturated!
But consider this; for $50 you can get 5 times this storage on a portable HDD and not have to worry about your upload link being saturated.

    Cloud is literally "hot air"

    • I've found cloud storage useful myself, although I wouldn't trust a new startup company before they prove themselves to be reputable.

    • nah, the cloud provides an offsite backup - this is needed for important data…

  • -1

I just got it working, but I'm a bit concerned with the backup schedule- the mmaximum duration is 24 hours. Does this mean every 24 hours, all my data will be reuploaded? This would kill my download cap wouldn't it (I'm with TPG and assume uploads count towards my download limit)? Or does it know which files have changed and only uploads those?

    • Google "incremental backup". That is what will happen now that you've completed the initial upload. For most users on most plans, the daily backups won't make much of a dent.
