I really gotta get me one of these microservers one day..

    • +1

I'm already thinking of a 2nd microserver.. lol

      • Only "thinking" of a second? Amateur!

        • +2

Hey, hey, hey.. hold up a minute, we're not professionals here on Ozbargain, despite what you may have heard in the media. ;)

  • I bought the Trend Micro antivirus, but shipping is not free, so really profit is only slightly more than $15.

    • If you buy with microserver = $55 free shipping

  • Is there any catch to this? It sounds a little too good to be true…

    • no catch, we just want to do a massive easter sale and our existing subscribers are already putting in orders

  • $15 shipping to WA !

    • I have capped to $10 Australia wide for the trend :D

      • Still showing $14.15 to WA.

        • Also getting $14.15 to WA

        • should be fixed some time ago, if you see some issue, try below suggestion:

          1. ensure your post code has been entered in shopping cart
          2. change your shipping method option if the cap did not apply and doing this should trigger the promotion code.
        • +1

it doesnt matter if it shows 14.15 shipping.

          Just check your total.

        • Tried both of those options. Will wait a bit longer.

        • If you have not resolved your issue, please consider calling us at 02-83388899 to help you out.

To get both speed and backup, I'm thinking getting 2 microservers, RAID 0 and manually back up each other via esata. Can it be done?

    • +1

Can I just point out that if you were really interested in backup and redundancy, you wouldn't have both servers in the same physical location.

      • Yes I understand, but I'm not really interested in that sense. As I explained I'm thinking about fast copy and simple backup.

        • I have 2, one running win 7 as a htpc, the other running whs2011as a backup. Transferring large files between them is 60-100MB/s via included network ports. No need for raid or esata. Not sure why you might want faster data transfer than that.

        • Yeah most of the time giglan is fine, but sometimes I need to copy several TBs in one go e.g. new NAS, new HDDs, that's when I really wish for faster speed.

Anyway, is esata transfer between the microservers doable or not?

        • Wouldn't bother, the onboard NIC will practically max out the HDD's. As in the mechanical drives will be the bottleneck, not the transfer interface. So e-SATA wouldn't be any faster.

AFAIK you can't connect two microservers over esata anyway but I may be wrong.

  • is this HP MicroSever better then Buffalo Terastation Pro Quad NAS?

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/97864#comment-1308748

    • +1

the HP has a lot more CPU power, PCIe expansion slot, much more base memory, and the option to expand it further, but you have to choose/install an OS.
The Pro Quad NAS is easy to get going with bundled software and a web management interface but installing third party software on it is tricky. I got a Pro Quad and a MicroServer later, and I'm still using the Terastation as my always on NAS - it's low power and quiet, and has decent network performance for a small ARM box.

  • wow.. such a good deal..

so tempting to get a second microserver..

    • yup - limited time EASTER Special

  • +1

awesome deal might put an order in on pay day :D

  • +1

I just bought Trend Micro. It seems that I have to wait until I receive the products to apply for the Cash Back. Please confirm?
Would this cash back get expired by the time I receive the product in mail? (This has happened to me with one Microsoft deal before and even Microsoft never replied to my email queries after that)

    • +1

cash back link provided shows " claims must be made within 30 days of purchase from proof of purchase". We are pretty sure you will receive your product within 30 days so you should be alright. And if you really experience issues with claiming, even if you did everything according to the terms, let us know, we will help you out.

      • i bought too, and at the end there is tax invoice produced. can we just scan this and send to claim $80?

        • Yes, it should work.

        • +1

I think what erwinsie meant was "Can we submit the claims now without having to wait for the product to arrive ?"

The claim form asks you to enter the Serial Number: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX, so I guess we have to wait for it to arrive.

        • i c. apologize for misleading answer above.

  • +1

    just placed an order.

  • Shipping sort of negates the sale on the drives for those of us who have purchased a microserver from you previously. Comes to the same price as MSY.

    • +6

Similar but not the same - how about i do a $5 shipping cap for hard drives as easter special?

  • +1

Can I use default 2Gb ECC ram combine with Non ECC ram 4Gb, so total 6Gb of ram?

    • +1

      Yes.

      I wouldnt recommend it thogh

    • you cant mix ecc and non-ecc ram together. that was what the rep told me the other day.

  • Do you have any fanless low profile graphics cards that will handle 1080p and do audio over hdmi? (assuming such a card exists)

    • such as this?
      http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-nvidia-geforce-gt…

would that fit in the N54L?

      • +1

yup that is a low profile designed graphics card

        • Is there anyway to add this item to the cart? It seems to be in-stock but there is no "Add to Cart" button?

        • I added it fine an hour ago…. ? (firefox 7.0.1 on winXP - don't hate me for ye olde software, it's my work's set up and I'm stuck with it)

        • Is it appearing for you now? I've tried it on every browser to no avail (no copy of FF7 since 2010 unfortunately :)

        • if you are referring to this:
          http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-nvidia-geforce-gt…

          • looks fine on my page. can you check again?
        • Yup looks fine, but the add to cart button is missing.

        • I am also no longer seeing an 'add to cart'/quantity button and box. But I see if for other items (I hit the logitech cooling pad in the right hand quick list and it had an add to cart button on it's page).

        • Yup, stock has been sold out. The last piece in our system is being reserved.
the next up model we have a few in stock right now:
          http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-nvidia-geforce-gt…

        • So…turns out that specific card has a heat sink that's too wide for the N54L. So don't buy it if you want to put it with an N54L. Probably same for N40L and N36L, too. Asus nvidia gt610 silent passive cooled low profile does NOT fit. Heat sink too fat. Now I can't finish my htpc until I get something to replace it. :(

edit: also the box didn't contain the low profile bracket. I attempted the install with no bracket at all on it to discover it was too fat.

  • Hey OP, whats the story with SSD's at the moment? Obviously prices are high for now.. do you have any sales on the horizon, or are we going to have to wait a while until things improve?

    • we will do our best to get SSD deals up on ozbargain in the coming weeks.

  • +1

Hi guys, I just rang up trend micro and they told me that shoppingexpress is not part of their eligible RETAIL store. They told me that because it is the only store, which does not fit within the "retail" wording of their terms and conditions, so no cash back.

Happy to be wrong if anyone finds out otherwise.

    • I actually saw that it was only available to certain retailers as one of the clause in the link to Trend micro.

I demand a refund and a cancellation if this is the case, its misleading! I would have just gone into JB to get it!

    • Is it too late now to cancel on my paypal?

    • +2

Rest assured we are eligible for the claim. If you cannot claim your cash back (adhering to the terms and conditions) - let us know - we will get you your $80 :).

      • good one shopexp~! but i think you better call trendmicro and explain your deal to them :)

        • +2

Yup, we have triple confirmed the claim eligibility. $80 per person is not something we want to fork out :).

        • You better get an email confirmation from TrendMicro and show us. Otherwise it's gonna be painful in getting the cashback down the line.
I have similar experience with Samsung 3D TV I bought couple of years back seeing on a similar post in OZB. Even thought the online seller had it confirmed from Samsung later they rejected all the claims.

Not just the seller all the buyers also had to fight for a long time to get it back.

Once you open the package to read the serial number it becomes hard for us to get a refund from you as well. :)

        • "The promotion is channel wide so everyone is eligible."
This is the reply after our deal was posted.

        • +1

Not everyone though. The one purhased from OW is not eligible. I put my order through anyway since I trust your words and your timely reply and your long time reputation here on Ozbargain. Great customer serice so I guess if there are ever any problems, you guys would be able to handle it properly.

        • thanks for your support!

  • What disk configs are people running in there? I see the controller only supports RAID 0 or 1? Do people buy a RAID 5 controller card or use a software solution?

Thinking of getting one as a NAS / Download box / QoS box

    • Wow!! So tempting to get another microserver!!

      These are damn good products!!

    • +2

What disk configs are people running in there? I see the controller only supports RAID 0 or 1? Do people buy a RAID 5 controller card or use a software solution?

I'm using Linux MD+LVM for a RAID-5 software solution. Easy enough to administer if you know Linux and performance is good; about 160MB/s read across 4 disks, more than enough to max 1Gbps Ethernet.

      • +1

I'm got my 4 disks setup in zfs using nas4free which is run off a 4gb usb stick. Easy to setup, good interface and run from usb.

  • +1

So I finally caved and bought one to use as a HTPC/file server/torrent box. Thanks shoppingsquare!

    • +8

      wrong company….

      • Oh man I'm so sorry. :)

Took me a while on ozb to work out why the crowds hated shopping(something) for their shipping prices some days, but loved them the next. I finally worked out it was two different companies, and then I go and make this schoolboy error.

        • +1

no worries, as long as it is once off :P

        • +1

If you can get me my order before the Easter weekend, I'll make sure I never refer to you by an inferior name again…. ;)

    • ShoppingExpress bought shoppingsquare?

      • different website, different management, different owners - just happened to have similar names.

        • +1

and different level of customer support…

        • same owner/boss behind?

  • +1

Eugh, once you add a video card, hard drive.. I still can't seem to justify this :(
    uni budget y'all

  • +1

ShoppingExpress, how about Low Profile gigabit ethernet card?

    • good suggestion, we will try to get them ready on future deals.

      • +2

Has to be Intel (- universally supported), such as PWLA8391GT.

  • If the server comes with 2Gb RAM and the server only has two slots for RAM and you want to buy 2x4Gb RAM to make 8Gb, then the 2Gb is surplus waste I guess. Pity there is no option to buy without RAM (or select RAM configuration).

  • Can this thing support 3tb drives? The info on the website says it supports up to 8 @ 4x2

    • It definitely does.

Just, AFAIK, you can't use a 3tb drive as your boot drive. Not a problem with some of the linux based O/S's as you can boot them off of a USB but still something to be aware of.

  • Ok, now. Wd green or red?

    • WD Red!! Heard lots of issues with the greens!!

  • Hi Reps,

Can these cards and ram (Low Profile Video Card, Gigabyte Geforce GT 210 $28,Gigabyte AMD HD 6450 $39, Kingston 4GB ECC Ram $44)fit into N40L? Thanks

    • yes, there are for both N40L & N54l

  • need to register at trendmicro before 4/4 ?

  • Can someone post a custom build with 8gb/16gb with gpu and get similar price

I look at the pics and YouTube and it looks nice but seems limited in space and upgrade

U need low profile gpu, not sure if u can add another tv card as well
U need ecc ram and it only has 2 ram slots
And u need to hack bios to get extra sata port

    With custom build u can
    -pick a better CPU
-use full profile and double slots gpu
    -all sata ports usable
    -4 ram slots
    -more raid options
    -more pci-x slots

Can someone tell me the custom build price difference (with gpu and 8gb ram).
And why this is still better?

    • Yes, with a custom build you can do all of that, but these aren't really intended to be used like a portable gaming rig or something requiring double-slot GPUs and hefty CPUs. You are probably better comparing it to some of the 4 bay NAS offerings around. These are designed to be reliable (HP have built with this in mind somewhat) and have low power consumption compared to most custom builds (although the N54L has higher consumption than N40L). They are suited to HTPC applications, SOHO servers, or as a more flexible alternative to a proprietary NAS device (as you can put any number of OS options), and they are pretty quiet and look nice too (if WAF is a factor). Some people find for basic services the 2Gb RAM is enough, although you can put up to 16Gb RAM in them (according to forums although the official supported max is 8Gb). If you just want a small, low power server with plenty of bays for hard drive storage you can easily just use it as it comes (as there is a perfectly serviceable VGA port on the back) and there are plenty of USB ports to hang off extras. These servers aren't necessarily for everyone but they are popular little boxes with an active enthusiast community.

      • But if u add 8gb or 16gb, gpu , usb 3.0

would it be cheaper to get a custom build?

  • Hi rep,

Just paid for the Trend Micro and found out the Epson WorkForce is really a good deal.

Could you please have a look at my order N0099912, anyway for me to combine my paid Trend Micro with the printer?

So, I can save the shipping cost and have 2 items shipped together. Thanks!

    • Our office's closed atm, can you please call us after 9:30am at 02-83388899 to advise our customer support to assist you to resolve this? Please have your order number ready and explain the situation and remember to do it early - in case we shipped your order out.

  • Just now I called your office arnd 5.15pm 3 times n one guy said will grab my number n call me back but no call.

    • try this morning please?

  • +1

ive got N40L and upgraded it to 2x 4gb kingston 1333mhz ram, 4port usb3 pci-e card and added a ATI 5450 videocard and a bluray drive, plays movies fine, its also connected to my 55inch tv and videos looks great, also using XBMC to run most media files.

a great purchase.. lets hope the power bills reduce, now i can leave this on 24/7 for torrents and as a media server.

will purchase another one down the track.

  • Dumb question…

I've just ordered the software - will this come on a CD or DVD??? Assuming yes…

I have a laptop that doesn't have an optical drive - something which is increasingly common these days - so how would I install the software?

    • external dvd drive is the answer, thats why i keep one handy to connect to devices which dont have optical. Its cheap nowadays.
