    Still better than gumtree.

    • +5

which really means nothing as ebay owns gumtree

      • +6

Besides the point, gumtree is for the time wasters, too risky for purchases not done face to face, and stupid people who make no effort to list an add properly. I guess that's why it's free. eBay uses PayPal, and you have a reputation to maintain.

In saying that, I have sold 2 cars via gumtree successfully, and purchased concert tickets on 2 occasions without an issue.

        • +8

gumtree is better for large, pickup items imo. I bought lots of furniture for my new house on there and got some really good bargains.

        • +10

They really should re-haul Gumtree. Make it so that sellers have a rep to maintain. Even simple improvements like rich text editing for better descriptions or higher resolution image uploads would make it a lot easier to sell there.

Then again, eBay owns gumtree, so the site design is kept in the dark ages so that you're tempted to use eBay instead.

        • If you search for a bulky item on EBay, like a fridge… It brings up an option to search gumtree for one locally.

  • +4

    crazy.

I use gumtree and had many successful sales and bought alot of things for a good price

  • Who owns Gumtree? eBay!!!

  • i assume this applies to items listed after 1 May, but items listed prior to 1 May but sell after will be subject to old fee structure.
(was going to list a few items, % increase will motivate me to do it in April)

    FeeBay

  • +3

The fees are getting too high, but they have the monopoly. Maybe quicksales will become more popular..

    • +8

It feels like they don't really want the general public to use them as a place to sell your goods anymore.

      • Agreed. They want to move towards a new only marketplace with business sellers.

        • +2

Do they get a better deal than normal mug punters though, or are they stuck with the 10% as well?

        • +1

Exactly. That's the question. It is the $1.50 per listing that pisses me off.

    • +2

Maybe quicksales will become more popular..

It will become more popular for sellers but buyers will still visit eBay to get the best prices.

Quicksales is pretty much saturated with over-priced junk, with very little buyers perusing the site.

Might as well call it SlowSales.

      • +1

I had no success as a seller on quicksales, it was a waste of my time listing things, although that was a few years ago. If anything it motivates me more to get up early and sell at the markets every now and then.

        • What kind of prices do you get at the markets?

  • I guess I'll be moving away from eBay for selling stuff every now and then :(

    • +3

Nah, I reckon we'll stay, unfortunately.

No one else has close to the coverage that eBay has.

  • +12

Don't forget paypal fee in addition. Altogether, the rip-off fee could be 12-13% for each transaction.

    • +1

that is the real kicker, once you add both fees in it becomes too much

  • Paypal and Ebay are both equally crap with their retarded fees and exchange rate (if applicable) and hoops. I've sold over $1K of stuff on Gumtree, face to face, cash only. Zero problems. I'll only use local classifieds, the alternative is junk.

    • +6

I get annoyed with all the star gazers and tyre kickers you get on gumtree though. "I'll offer you $15 for your Nokia Lumia 920 SERIOUS CASH OFFER!! CAN PAY TODAY!!" I remember dealing with these jokers back in the days of the old Trading Post.

The good thing about ebay is that you want it, fine you bid for it. No bitching about the price.

      • +9

Or they'll say "I'll come to pickup at 12pm".

THey leave you waiting like an idiot and 1pm later they message back "Sorry, changed my mind".

        • +14

You're lucky if they bother to text you.

        • lol. Happened to me few weeks back while selling bar stools. After Texting the person my address to pick up and waiting like a fool for 2 hours. Called him and he said, "My wife told me not to buy these as they don't match the existing furniture". I was like wtf, did you bother to tell me or should have shown the pics to your wife before coming.

But I have sold many things using Gumtree. it is easy and I can give people good price, as I am not paying any ebay or paypal prices. In return buyer gets very good prices.

  • +1

This nearly gave me a heart attack

For one off sellers, this is a major hike -

but for regular subscription sellers - its no biggy, the new fee structure seems to be better under the "new regime"

Final value fees for successfully selling an item 9.9%. !!! Greedebay !!!

  • +4

We are in the process of souping up Selling & Swapping forum to be more like a classified, as it's actually one of the more popular forum on OzBargain (which I have no idea why people would use it). Hopefully we'll be able to push out an initial version in May, but then it is not meant to replace eBay or Gumtree, as it's just a service provided for our members to off load their impulse buys.

I don't sell often on eBay these days. However when my house was going through renovation a while ago, I used to buy / sell a lot of stuff there — my old vintage bed room doors, excessive bricks / pavers, toilet and vanity, etc. It was a good market place to recycle old stuff instead of throwing them away. Too bad they are now only interested in business and shops selling to community.

Another interesting thing is — why aren't the shops moving away from eBay to focus on their own website, if the final value fee is so high? I remember that Deals Direct & ShoppingSquare / Apus used to be big sellers on eBay, moved away into their own eCommerce site, and now they have re-established their shops again on eBay. Why?

    • +2

      Why?

      Because ebay has the traffic.

      • So I guess the "disruption" we need is probably not another market place like eBay where every merchant lists their own items there for sale. But an aggregator that already has the traffic and is of low / zero cost to the merchants.

        • +6

That would be Google product search, presumably? It has great potential, but honestly Australians are pretty dense when it comes to these sorts of things. Most mug punters regard their computers as a facebook and eBay machine and thats it.

I list stuff on eBay because there are so many rubes on there that pay ridiculous prices for things. I generally sell phones for close to what I paid for them, sometimes even more, even though I use them for a year.

No offence to the people here, but I would never list stuff on Ozbargain auctions. No rubes here, just cheap b****** who would screw me down to the last dollar.

        • +1

Indeed. I guess we are just implementing something that we thought are useful (as our stats show that's actually one of the most used forum here). As m0nkeycheese has mentioned, these are professionals that want to bargain down the price at any chance. Comparing to eBay which I guess would be filled with casual shoppers who jump at things without doing much pricing research, as we often see people loot the deals on OzBargain to resell on eBay.

Maybe one good thing from this eBay fee raise would be less brodening on OzBargain, as it would be less attractive to resell on eBay.

    • +1

which I have no idea why people would use it

I have to agree there. Good luck getting a good price for anything.. your selling to professionals!

    • Why did the big sellers return…

Because they now get a better deal with ebay. Corporate "discounts" would apply. Ebay wanted them back and makes sure they play with fees that are fair to them.

    • I think it can be people still search the pricing on ebay and some trust thing by paypal in case buyer does not get their item as specified.

  • +1

it's clear ebay don't want small volume sellers anymore, if it was entirely up to ebay there would only be buy it now items sold by business sellers and nothing else! this is what happens when a company has little competition, and ebay know it, also the FVF is totally biased against the small seller, i mean listing fees are tiered but FVF are fixed!? how about a sliding scale for FVFs ebay?? but i think the reason for another fee hike is the 40 'free' listings per month-now you know these ain't so free anymore, and don't get me started on the ebay/paypal double dipping…

Australia Post click and send rates are also increasing on APR 8th.

    New rates:

    • +1

Thanks, I need to stock up on prepaid satchels anyway so I might as well do it before the 8th…

      • +1

What? Click and send satchels are not prepaid.

    • I can't find the new click and send prices on that pdf. Does anyone know what the new 500g and 3kg satchels will be, with signature?

      Thanks

  • +3

eBay sellers that put an item up for auction will be encouraged to ask for the final transaction to occur outside of eBay, therefore avoiding paying the bulk of the fee to eBay.

    • or list an item for 99cents with $100 shipping! that's another loophole, FVF is calculated on item price not shipping, to be honest if total cost is cheaper i don't mind seller dodging the fees this way

      • +1

eBay already knows that loophole and has it covered… if the shipping is proportionally higher than the price of the item, they usually prevent you from listing the item.

        • aha! you don't find out this info until it happens! although the figures i used were exaggerated to make my point

        • +1

I still see it a lot. Especially items from China

      • +1

true, but Paypal fees are based on both item price + shipping.

  • +1

The current rate is 7.9%, so it's a 2% increase.

    • +9

9.9% compared to 7.9%, it is more than 25% hike.

      • +1

Going up higher than inflation. What bullshit!

  • i guess someone has to fund their 'pinchme' business…

  • We have stopped selling on ebay/gumtree heaps ever since discovering Facebook swap/sell groups. Free listings and no need to pay postage, final value fees etc. Pros and cons of course, but for the casual seller this is a great way to avoid ebay/paypal fees.

  • +2

Wow, this coupled with the the paypal fees is a real kick.
Say you sell something for $200, ebay and paypal will send up taking around $25-$30

  • +2

    Really harsh.
You'd think they'd make enough money off all the ads alone.

  • I posted earlier about Gumtree, but if you missed it, I have only had one no show out of over a dozen, and only one of the dozen refused to pay the amount agreed upon by $10 (I think it was $290, he wanted to $280, meh). Otherwise everyone else was on time within 5-10min, and paid the asking price. Lowball offers I binned and didn't bother setting up a meet. Seriously those fees kill it, Ebay isn't worth it, and Paypal is even worse.

    • +1

I have sold a few items on gumtree. I don't even bother replying to people who offer ridiculous amounts like $40 for a $100 item. However I have had quite a few no shows that don't even inform me they are not coming anymore. No text or call or anything, they just don't show up. Those are the ones that piss me off. If they let me know that they can't make it anymore I would be perfectly fine with it…

    • +2

If people try and lowball you just look them in the eye and tell them no. Do you really think he's going to get back in his car and drive the half-hour back to his fibro humpy in Browns Plains?

    • +1

      Gumtree > eBait
(I know they're the same owners)

Seriously, aside from the spiraling fees? I stopped selling on eBait when they insisted on bank account details to direct debit their fees!

After almost getting burnt by a "respected" company many years ago, nobody direct debits from me.

  • +1

i will still use ebay because i can sell shit that i think is worthless, but i get a few dollars for

    • you could have gotten a few hundred dollars for it

  • Maybe they will start charging fees on Gumtree now

    • They kind of already do… you pay fees for priority Top-of-page listings, and also to bump it up when it starts getting old.

  • +1

A good alternative to selling online is www.quicksales.com.au
I have been using it for years now, less buyers but very low fees.
For standard listings its free to list and final fee is just 2%
Easy to use very similar to ebay and has their own listing software called Express Lister (similar to Turbo Lister).
Aussie company and part of carsales network.
Have had great experience with customer service, they always answer promply and very helpful.

    • I might try these guys as well, thanks for tip emels, never ran into this site before:)

      • Used to be known as oztion.

I still call them that - easier to remember.

    • +1

Against eBay rules, I recently dual-listed about 20 items on eBay and Quicksales over a period of a few months. On Quicksales, the items were listed at significant discount to the prices I set on eBay.

All the items sold, but not a single one sold through Quicksales. It's hard to think of a website with a more unintentionally ironic name. On the other hand, I don't really blame them for their lack of success - eBay's stranglehold is so hard to break, it seems itself to have difficulty ejecting the casual seller market it no longer wants.

      • Oztion really are idiots for changing the name. It was slowly building momentum thanks mainly to ebay's ridiculous and constant changes - then it all just - died when they changed the name.

        • Carsales .com.au bought Oztion. Hence the new name quick sales, an extension of there Group now own Caravansales, bike sales, car sales quick sales, boat sales etc etc etc….

        • Yeah, but they should've just kept the name/paid a little extra for it. It's not like they were… Coke… a name change might hurt a company like that for a short time - but a tiny auction site like oztion - what were they thinking!?

  • Go Gumtree for sure if there's pickup. eBay is just getting greedy now

  • For me, eBay's high fees have been a disincentive to buying new stuff for myself, especially tech gadgets. The knowledge that I could painlessly sell something I'd bought was always a factor in the back of my mind that made it easier to buy things in the past.

Now, it's getting too painful mainly because of the financial hit and the bias in favour of buyers that makes selling riskier. I won't buy that new video card for my computer as readily as I might've five years ago, because selling my old one is a lot less fun.

In that way, it's been a good thing for my hip pocket.

  • I used Ebay from 2003. It was a great place buy/sell reasonable fees. Now it is rip off.
Buyer could always claim item is not working and Paypal always on the buyer side ( how they could
establish hitech staff working or not ? ). Full refund including postage refunded to buyer. No recorse for sellers. Takes a lot of time even to get back Ebay/ Paypal fees and you lost time, money and lucky to get your item in the same condition. In the same time a lot of con ( both buyers and sellers ) going on and nobody care - $$$ already made. And now even more.
With all shortcoming Gumtree is OK for casual sellers…

Just google " Paypal problem " and read all the horror stories !!!
