  • Can anyone comment on the reliability of OEM vs Non OEM Hard drives?

    • +1

      No difference!

Probably more change of a OEM drive being damaged/miss handled ect. but if its not DOA then they are 100% the same.

And I not sure where your can but retail internal drives in Australia bar some SSD's.

      Straight from website:

This item is sold as an OEM without retail packaging. 3 Years Manufacture Warranty

      What is an OEM Drive?

There is no real difference between OEM and retail hard drives from a hardware standpoint; they contain the same materials, are made in the same way, and come off of the same production line. The real differences between OEM and retail hard drives is the fancy retail packaging

So to answer your question, I wouldnt worry. It's still got 3 year warranty, but no pretty packaging.

      • Excellent answers…..another case of OEM usage…I completely forgot this variant

    • Cheers guys, I bought a 2TB, packaging doesn't bother me one bit so its a good price!

  • OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer, which (when used correctly) means the item is manufactured for the brand that it is sold under. I am never sure what sellers mean as the term is often used incorrectly>

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_equipment_manufacturer

It appears that these drives are WD-branded "elements" and "my passport" drives so it is safe to assume that the drives are made to WD's spec if not made by WD. It isn't a case of "GENERIC BRAND" with WD drives used (ie WD OEM). Non-OEM is just as confusing, but generally it means a product made to meet someone elses standard (ie generic brand medicines….eg Home Brand vs Panadol or car accessories eg "for Ford floor mats" vs "Genuine Ford floor mats")

  • I cant comment on all the products, but the WD 2TB seems like a decent price.

$125.95 plus $4.95 flat shipping to anywhere in Australia = $130.90 delivered. About as cheap as I've ever seen that drive. Plus vote.

  • Bought a 2tb. Good price. Plus vote.

sorry guys only have 1.5TB left. Completely sold out of 1TB and 2TBs.

However the last 1.5Tbs will be bundled with a 8GB Sony or Verbatim USB Stick

  • Nice price on the Logitech cover. I have been looking for one of those. thanks.

OEM products are usually for parts/software eg internal HDD, optical drives, Windows CD

The OEM products here are external drives - external drives do not have OEMs as they are sold separately

OEMs were previously sold as a package like a fully built computer, so there was no need to include packaging.

Can the Op show where OEMs exist for external HDD> thanks

It would appear the Rep doesn't want to answer your question.

      • Your comment was 4h 37min ago, but the rep already answered it 5h 57min ago down below.

        In case you missed it:

"…..we buy this in a bundle pack with laptops."
