Price isn't sharp enough this time.
They may have fixed the terrible camera and terrible battery life by only slight upgrades
But it's still gonna be fragile and uneconomic to repair
    Pass on this one.

    • +3

I have to agree, had my N4 for four months, piss poor battery when running bluetooth, podcasts, browsing etc. Also dropped it yesterday and back screen shattered, $100 to replace it!

      • +6

I'm moving my nexus 4. No regrets at $299.

Edit: with Paranoid Android. Stock was a bit shitty.

        • +1

          Loving*

        • +6

          where to?

        • +7

          To his heart

        • +4

          Deep…deep inside me.

        • +1

Geee, are we talking about turning on the vibration?

        • get franco kernal too. It improves performance and increases battery life.

        • Have since day one :)

      • +13

Why are CeeAyeEee and beakeroo getting negged? I see nothing wrong with their comments and their views are openly expressed/discussed in EVERY forum I have read about the N4. N4 glass is fragile and crappy battery. That is why I passed on it at $299, even if it was a bargain. The N5 looks awesome in every way except the battery at 2300mAH. That, for me at least, breaks the deal for the moment, until I read otherwise in reviews.

        • +1

          The claims are :

Talk time up to 17 hours*
Standby time up to 300 hours†
Internet use time up to 8.5 hours on Wi-Fi, up to 7 hours on LTE

Don't know about you, but 17 hours of talk time and 7 hours of LTE browsing seems perfectly OK for battery life. Even if they undershoot, that's a day's practical use.

        • +30

          Google claims it.

Given the extremely good practical battery lifetime on the G2, I've no reason to believe they are wildly out.

          Mod: removed personal attack

        • Specs stated in OP's info. Not "claims"

        • +1 on G2 comment. 3000mAH battery and proven in real world tests to be great.

        • +10

          From phonearena;
          http://www.phonearena.com/news/Nexus-5-An-exhaustive-specs-r…

See, when we said that the memory department is the Nexus 5's Achilles heel, we forgot all about the crappy battery life on the Nexus 4. The previous Nexus had a 2100mAh cell, whereas the new one features a slightly larger, embedded 2300mAh Li-Polymer battery. Seeing as the Nexus 5 was based off the LG G2, some of you may have been expecting a 3000mAh unit instead (and rightfully, battery life on the G2 is beyond awesome!).

Before you accuse us of nit-picking, you've got to consider the facts here. The Nexus 4 shipped with a 720p screen, whereas the Nexus 5 features a more exacting 1080p panel. Considering that the display is still by far the most power-hungry component, one has to wonder what kind of battery life one will be able to squeeze out of the Nexus 5. On the positive side, Google is rumored to be introducing quite a few kernel and overall tweaks to Android 4.4 KitKat, which hopefully means that post Android KitKat battery life will be a different topic altogether.

        • +2

          G2 has 3000 battery, N5 has 2300 so can't compare to G2.

        • +1

Agreed my N4 battery was bloody hopeless and I unfortunately shattered my screen by dropping it less than 1m off the ground a few months ago, very fragile screen as the glass curled right around the edge..

Got a HTC one mini and battery life is like night and day compared to the N4, in the past HTC had poor battery too. To me the best thing to do is hold off on the N5 until full user reports are in to see whether the extra 200mah in battery is just lost with the larger higher res screen..

P.S. I would not believe what manufacturers claim about battery life, it may be great, but don't trust what they say.

        • +1

Why are CeeAyeEee and beakeroo getting negged?

The only thing wrong with the original comment, as I see it, is that the fragility of the back glass on the N4 has no bearing on the durability of the N5. The battery problems are valid complaints, though.

        • +1

I'm guessing that's probably one of LG's contract details to build the phone. We'll build you it but you can't have battery life like our flagship phone.

        • +2

          @alwayseric U IS NOOB

        • Slways bring along the sony power bank you got for $30?

      • $100? Cheapest I found was $165 + shipping to LG from Canberra. Had the phone 6 weeks and a slight dropped completely ruined it. I figured with a plastic back, I may as well get the new N5 rather than pay half the price to fix the old one.

        • -1

so its google and LG's fault that you dropped a glass phone

        • in fact it is, they didnt design it to be glass by accident. furthermore it is one of the few phones where the glue is so tight on the front its almost impossible to remove and the rear having no thought into the heating effects of a battery on the glass.

apple users have all gone thru this so maybe they will use some space age material like 'aluminium' on the motorola nexus.

        • +3

I dropped my samsung G2 from moving bikes, down stairs … a few nicks. The nexus 4 slipped out of my pocket about 40cm above the ground. There are no marks on the case but the front is completely smashed and unresponsive. Did I drop it? Sure. Did I expect the result? No way. A 5 minute search on the internet showed it wasn't an uncommon occurance and that is has a rep as a very delicatephone. Also, when I rang LG, before I finished my sentence about my phone having a problem (not specified), the guy was quoting me the screen/digitiser replacement price. Make of that what you will.

      • +1

it yesterday and back screen shattered, $100 to replace it!

        That's cheap.

Just because the phone is cheap(compared to other high end phones) doesn't make it any cheaper to repair.

      • +1

i smashed my front glass yesterday too. I now have a rear glass, battery and internals for sale $60+PP from canberra. PM me

That has no bearing on the N4 having terrible battery life due ENTIRELY to google's android updates. its too bad I never got to see the wondrous 'promised' improvement of K release.

the old phone with decent hardware suffered from poor software believe it or not, I fear the new one will suffer the same fate including the dreaded low memory warning, when you have 400(or 800)MB free still.

    • +15

The price is sharper than expected, and pretty good for a flagship level phone.

The camera is quite a lot better (judging by the shots taken with it). Its never going to rival an SLR, but for the 'snappy' purpose, its quite good enough and the HDR snapping mode looks good.

Battery life is plenty good enough for a day's normal use. The claimed life is good and given its parent, there is no reason to significantly disbelieve it.

As for fragile and uneconomic to repair, there's no glass back on the N5, and the service manual, complete with how you disassemble the thing (fairy easy), was one of the main things to leak.

You seem to have an unrealistic downer on Nexus devices - it's a much better phone than the iphone, for half the price…

    • +1

On my second Nexus4 after dropping it 400mm onto concrete and the screen got one crack in it . LCD was working fine but the digitiser is built into the glass so no touch screen for me . Cost to repair is $200 .
Yes I bought another because I do like stock android with a couple of tweeks and for $270 delivered no phone touches it IMHO .

        • How about 0.4m?

        • +18

400,000 µm sounds better to justify the $200 repair cost…

        • How about a height of 4p

          p = pubes.

      • May I suggest that troyww is in a trade hence why the talk in mm. Is this the case? :P

    • +2

The N4's battery life was at least a massive improvement over the terrible Galaxy Nexus.

    • +9

Rubbish. It was $399 for 16GB last year, and its $399 for 16GB this year. How is the price not sharp enough? How about we compare this price to any of the competitors?

Furthermore, this time it has no shortcomings, whereas last year it topped out at 16GB, had no LTE, and had a 720p display.

      But suit yourself.

      • +1

By dropping the 8gig model, they've effectively increased the minimum price. Still a good buy imo, but his logic seem simple enough to grasp. What's your problem?

  • Thank you, save my ass from waiting for the rest of the year to buy one.

  • +30

    Normal price. Forums

From what I hear the Nexus 6 series will be absolute killers….unfortunately they will only havef a four-year lifespan to prevent them from developing their own "emotional responses"

    • +2

Meh. I hear the Nexus 6 will be virtually indistinguishable from other phones.

      • -1

I hear the iclone 6 is going to have even flatter icons and copy virtually every android feature.

        • +6

Nexus 6 and iClone 6 in 2014, devide 6 by 2 and you get 3.

          Half Life 3 confirmed!!!

        • +2

nchc, I'm loving my Nexus 4, but people like you who continually need to bash Apple as some kind of twisted ego boost is just sad.

        • Glad you like your N4 and its distinguished features

      • +2

Indeed they would be Replicants but superior in many ways. A good old Voight Kampff test will help you to tell the difference

  • +3

2300mAH battery…. I would have been all over it if the 2700mAH was in it as previously spec'd. I'll wait for some real world tests before jumping in. Dunno if I'm feeling disappointed.

  • +16

ordered, but it's not really a "deal"

    • +8

The Australian price is less than the price the yanks pay, once you take into account GST. So in that respect it is a deal.

And compared to the stitchup the brits are suffering….

      • +12

Should I post a Commodore at standard price as a deal because it's cheaper than in the US?

        • +35

A Commodore is never a deal.

        • A Commodore is never a deal.

A bad deal is still a kind of deal…

        • +6

          What about a Commodore 64??

        • That's a better deal than the car.

        • Wow, 32 vote ups, 1 vote down. Commodore really has fallen out of favor hadn't it.

  • FINALLY! :) ordered!

  • Arrrrrrrrrrrrhahahaahahah! Finally got a white 32gb, soooooo excited. Thanks OP! Now where can I find a good looking case to go with my new found love:)

    • +7

      buys a white phone

covers it with a different colour case

      • Cause, you know, they couldn't get one like the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case. That's what I'm getting for mine (although I ordered black).

        • Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case

hopefully its more sturdy than the S2 and iPhone 4 versions I had of the same case… both split around the usb port due to the very thin bridge across this section

Got the Spigen Slim Armour this time for the Nexus 5

        • Armour was very tempting, after watching a ton of reviews I still couldn't pick a winner, so just went with the hybrid, hope it works out, if not at least it was cheap.

  • +2

Yawn, was excited but think this will be just like N4. Battery is way too small for 5" screen. Bet battery tests show that it wont last 1 day for 'normal' users.

  • +1

Ordered 32g white, the deal is so so, but I'm vey glad to have this Sweetie soon.

  • bought 32gb so keen

  • +1

Is it a camera or phone, it seems a camera as that's the only feature they show in promotional video

  • Does anyone happen to know the size for its sim, Micro or Nano? Thx

  • +3

Pardon my ignorance about this product but sorry… is it worth speculating with N5 instead of SGS4, Sony Xperia Z1, or LG G2?
Why lots of OzB give +1?
Is the spec really great? Why the camera is just 8 MP?
LG G2 32GB is just $529 at Kogan and this N5 cost you $469.
    Just $60 for the difference.
SGS4 is also under $600 now.
Does N5 really better than LG G2 or SGS4? :)
I have Nexus 7 2012 and they are great. But Nexus Phone? I don't think it's really worth?

    • +11

A lot of people buy it for official AOSP

      • +3

Was thinking the same i.e. N5 Vs G2.I think G2 is better value on paper, however the benefit of a large dev community ensures the N5 will remain current for longer. I regret puchasing G1over N4 for the same reason

        • +1

I was VERY seriously looking at the G2 in preference to the N5. However I jumped the N5 way when I saw the price and the 'N5-only' capabilities in Kit-Kat. Not everything is coming to other phones, and the $80 difference in price means it tilts the N5's way (particularly with the support, which will go on forever).

The SGS4 is out of it, the S5 is due after Christmas and I'm no fan of the super saturated colours.

No idea if the Z1 is worth it; I have an aversion to Sony and their practices.

        • Thanks for your info.

To confirm, so people buy Nexus phone mainly for the future OS support from the larger community, and not for the phone features (e.g. better camera?)

        • A large dev community means features of other phones will quickly be ported to N5. Through software a dev community enhances hardware capabilities

        • And value- a lot cheaper than the big brands.

      • Thanks. So people but Nexus phone for mostly experimenting and playing with their OS and any Android app projects?

So if I am just an end-user that would love to have the great features phone and NOT interested for doing Android app dev project as a developer, does this Nexus 5 should attract me?

        • +6

Nexus phones are closest to the iphone experience with apple - in that the OS gets developed and targeted on the phone, and visa versa.

Whilst say, Samsung, can deliver a great phone, it's always Samsung taking what Google have done, and then loading their bloat applications on top of it. Not only does that mean they are slow to the updates (and if you buy via a carrier you have to wait for their red tape on top), it also means the 'fit' of the design can be questionable. Wild swings of how you use it/how it looks, between, say, Gmail and the contacts.

On top of this Nexus phones tend to be much cheaper than the equivalent competition. The N5 is better than the SGS4, but even this long after the SGS4's release, its still more expensive. That's down to profit margin expectations. Now, this time the N5 isn't quite as much of a steal as the N4 was; but its still half the price of the (worse) iphone 5s.

And finally, being a Nexus device, it will have Google support for about 2 years at least, and 3rd party developer for longer than that. In itself that tends to extend the practical life of the device by a year or two.

        • It's more about the experience AOSP provides

If you own a Nexus 7 as well as a non-Nexus device, and you can't see the big deal, then you probably won't regret going with another device

    • +1

a lot of people buy it just because people believe nexus/googles offer better values (thinking about eg nexus 7), but as magnafunk pointed out earlier at this price, it is not really a "deal". give it a month or two, the price will drop to a more pleasant level (again, thinking about the Nexus 7 2013)

      • +2

I've bought a few devices from sony , LG , Lenovo and HTC only to be left high and dry with little to no software upgrade . Thats where nexus devices win hands down .

        • +1

i am not sure who negged me, but i agree with you. also, nexus 5 is really appealing to me too. i just reckon as many pointed out this is a rrp. i am sure the price will drop very soon if you just wait for a few weeks.

        • +3

Have look at the price history of Nexus 4. After it was released in October last year, all the local retailers actually sell them more expensive than the Google Play store. Eventually grey importers sell them cheaper, until the first and the only price drop from Play Store 10 months after the release.

Google is playing the Apple model for Nexus 4 and likely for Nexus 5 as well. One major release per year, and little price variation. Except it starts out a lot cheaper than Apple's equivalent.

    • +7

I would prefer running STOCK Android rather than Touchwiz or Sense or whatever it is

      • +2

        Agreed. Stock android is wonderful.

LGs overlay is possibly the worst thing about the G2. Slow and unecessary animations and whatnot as well. And yeh, not a big fan of Touchwiz and HTC Sense as well.

        • That and the weird buttons on the back. I couldn't deal with that…

  • Sold! Just bought a white one.

    • +2

I normally would have bought the white one but whats with this half white and half black?

      • +1

Thought every white color phone has a black screen when it's off :) Right ?

      • I like the front being black, it's just a good aesthetic choice because black borders will always make anything on your display popout or contrast better. I never understood the craze around white phones, everything on your screen looks more bland. But with the N5 I can see a good compromise for those who just want a white phone.

  • i will wait for the review then decide i had a horrible battery experience on the N4

    • Apparently 32gb has longer battery life than 16gb?

      • It does not. That was a just a rumor.

    • Apparently 32gb has longer battery life than 16gb?

  • Looks good to me. As long as the camera is better than the appalling one on the N4.

What do u guys think is it worth saving $50 to go for the 16GB (find I hardly use 8GB on my N4), or get the 32GB for resale value?

  • +7

Dear god, $39 for a plastic bumper? Talk about gouging on the accessories!

    https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_5_Bumper…

    • +1

It's almost as though you've never heard of Apple..or any other large brand. $40 for a case is pretty standard.
