        • Since when has Big W sold the Nexus?

Whether a standard-priced item is a "bargain" — we have discussed numerous times before. Same with when Nexus 4 was first launched and when it had a $100 price drop. Both "standard price" on Google's website (although I don't think Google Play's price can be equated as Recommended Retail Price though), however they have been perceived as bargains by many simply because it's one of the best Android phone for that price at the time.

However those who voted -1 should have their right to do so here as well (with their reasons to justify it).

To me it's a great phone at a good price. Remember that 32GB is $449 with GST, vs. LG G2's $529 from Kogan that's w/o GST (matters to business buyers). I don't think there's any FHD Snapdragon 800 phones that are cheaper. I would buy one if I didn't buy the N4 2 months ago…

    • +1

I'm happy with justified negs - but as stated earlier I can't see a neg as being justified if the only explanation given is "same as RRP"….??

    • just need to wait for this to hit retail stores and be more expensive than google play price… then we can revoke those -ve's ;)

    • I would buy one if I didn't buy the N4 2 months ago…

Don't feel so glum boss, keep this on the front page for another 24 hours and by this time next week you will have a brand new shiny Nexus 5 sitting on your desk. Signed, sealed and delivered from Google HO.

      • Only souvenirs I've got from Google were pens, stickers and lanyards :(

        • You deserve better than that.

        • @unity — No. I am mainly replying you as you have somehow implied that I'm leaving this deal on OzBargain front page because somehow I am taking freebies from Google, which is false.

        • +2

I think unity1 is jokingly implying that since it is on the front page of Ozbargain that Google is making heaps of sales and would give one to you for free as a way of saying thank you.

        • Don't think Google needs advertising for this phone… sold like hot cakes.

        • +1

I made that comment tongue in cheek.

  • +2

I'm going to wait for reviews to see if it is a viable option based on poor opinions of battery life on previous model.

  • Have just placed an order, Nexus 5, 32G, Black. Shipping within 2-3 weeks. Long waiting!

I currently own a Nexus 4 which purchased in Jan from HongKong, cost me $580 including postage. This one costs me $470, consider it's a 32G one, so relatively cheaper.

It is not a perfect phone, but I still go for it in a heartbeat! I will own both Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, also planing to get a new Nexus 10 later!

  • +1

I'll wait for the REAL bargain when it's $299. :)

    • +1

Be prepared to wait until just before nexus 6 launches.

      • I don't think Google will make a phablet… it's most likely going to be 5" again.

  • I just bought the nexus 4 a month ago but havnt opened it yet….

Is it worth me returning it or selling it so I can get the nexus 5? I have a samsung galaxy S2 but the tethering doesnt work (since i got it from telstra but they refuse to do anything about it) so drives me crazy.

    • El Marko
    • +1

From Google Play? You can't return it anymore, you only have 15 calendar days to return a device.

  • Will the 28 degrees card and its buyers protection work on this?

    • +2

only if the price drops within 6 months.. which i dont think is likely.
perhaps $100 drop in aug 2014 prior to the Nexus 6 release.

  • -7

I am not that impressed the hyped version was the one I wanted both the camera and battery seem a let down and now swipe left for Google now , nothing like force feeding their fans.

I think the lumia 920 at $299 is a much better buy.

    • +2

True, but the 920s android performance is pretty poor ;-)

    • +1

Lol you're angry at Google because rumors that some made up didn't turn out to be true?

      • -1

No I am angry because they don't know when No is no with Google now and Google + so they force feed.

    • now swipe left for Google now , nothing like force feeding their fans.

      What?

I think the lumia 920 at $299 is a much better buy.

And the 920? Firstly, I can't see where you're getting $299 from Kogan from - I'm seeing $329. Secondly, that's imported stock with a Kogan warranty - good luck with that. Thirdly, it's a year old phone with a quarter of the apps and half the specs for 70% of the price. The 920 might be a better buy for you, but I don't think that's true for the majority.

Even if the N5 didn't live up to (often ridiculous) expectations, it is better value for money.

      • -5

It was $299 yesterday imported stock ? Where do you think the nexus 5 comes from and Kogan provide Aus warranty without a storefront in the exact same way that Google do they both have horror stories when it comes to actually using it.

My statement was my opinion no need for attacking. Android kitkat has new features to try to involve Google + and Google now in your life which I don't like just because they make the device I don't want to be forced to give them all my details so they can then advertise at me and make more money.

        • +2

          It was $299 yesterday

As far as I can see it's not today.

Kogan provide Aus warranty without a storefront in the exact same way that Google

I think I'd take Google and LG - the original manufacturer and distributor - over Kogan any day. They are inherently less risky than a grey market importer.

Android kitkat has new features to try to involve Google

You mean Google Now on the homescreen? How that amounts to 'force feeding', I'll never know - it's simply accessible through another method than it previously was. You don't even have to enable it, if you don't want it.

And BTW, Google Now is not a channel through which you give them data, it is the benefit that arises from giving them data. If you use any of their services, you already opted in to the data collection - using Google Now makes no difference other than you get a handy tool for information every now and then. So again, they're hardly shoving anything malicious in your face.

        • "Force feeding" is an interesting topic. I'm not too familiar with Kitkat but if it's anything like HTC's Blinkfeed (which originally was not able to removed from the homescreen), it can appear to be "force feeding", or at least very subtle persuassion. Not everybody sees Google Now or Blinkfeed as beneficial

But I do have to agree that the continued Google+ integration with their services while they appear harmless and unifying (I won't argue they aren't), it is quite sly.

E.g. Youtube users merging more with Google+

At the very least it's smart marketing I guess… somewhat

  • As I was purchasing it said 'ships on the 7th of November', now that I click on the status it is saying 2-3 weeks…NOT HAPPY!. I also got charged $1.05 trying to pay with an Amex, you guys may want to check your bank accounts!

    • That's standard with many banks and cards, to avoid that you need a card that does not charge an overseas transaction fee e.g. 28 degrees MasterCard

  • +2

Should be moved to the forum, this is not a bargain but normal price.

  • +2

    I've purchased it.

It was either this, or the note 3.
    $418.95 vs $850~ish.

At this price though, I could probably buy another phone next year that's even better and still come out on top…

I would not have purchased it if it didn't have a 1080p screen, but it does.

And yes, I got the 16GB version. Is that enough space? Probably.

AND I do think this is a deal/bargain because it is substantially cheaper than what you would get with any flagship snap dragon 800 processor phone. Plus it's about to be sold out which will raise it's value to above RRP, thus making this a bargain of sorts as there is a limited supply.

    • I was surprised at how much the space on a phone fills up. Unless you regularly remove photos off your phone, and/or don't download apps often (again was surprised how big some of them were) fills up quite quickly. Wish I had microSD expansion on my One X, considering it's so cheap buy one.

  • +5

This site should be called OzSubjectiveBargain

If something can be had at one price, for everyone - at any given time - it shouldn't be considered a bargain IMO.

    • Why is it not a bargain?
Try finding another phone with these specs and instant Android updates for $399 then tell me it's not a bargain.
It's OzBargain because there are bargains for each individual. When I see cushions, lamps, girl toys and weird items I don't comment "Not a bargain" just because it doesn't interest me.

      • +10

We aren't comparing or reviewing products here. We are after the best deal, not just the RRP. I think it's funny that it's suddenly become about the "Category" (Android OS) over the actual product (Nexus 5)??

      • Why is it not a bargain?

please refer to ciab's post above.

I don't comment "Not a bargain" just because it doesn't interest me.

lol, who said I'm not interested? I have a Nexus 7 FHD, Nexus 4, iPhone 5. Thinking of getting this phone as well. Don't just assume things lala1911

Try finding another phone with these specs and instant Android updates for $399 then tell me it's not a bargain.

Just applying your logic > in regards to the new iPhone 5S selling at it's retail price of $869 > try finding another phone with its specs and instant iOS updates for $869 then tell me it's not a bargain.

        Go on.

        • Instant OS updates? Since when do updates not install instantly when you purchase direct from google? I have a N7 and Galaxy Nexus they both update right away, certainly no slower than apple. If however you purchased via a phone provider over here then of course its slower…

        • You won't be getting kitkat update for your Galaxy Nexus.

        • I know its not, thats why i got a N5 which i really like. But thats not the point the point, is that the n5 is drastically less cost than a iphone 5s and it has instant updates.

      • +4

It is not a bargain because you can buy this item at the same price at any time (and less sold out but when avail it will be the same price).

    • If something can be had at one price, for everyone - at any given time - it shouldn't be considered a bargain IMO

In My Opinion? Talking about subjectiveness…

      • In My Opinion? Talking about subjectiveness…

        Yeah, hence the IMO

        • Therefore in most other people's opinion that this Nexus 5 deal is subjectively a bargain — what's the problem with that?!

        • oh the irony..

        • Well doesn't that quote imply these prices for the Nexus 5 can be seen from anywhere else? I mean (most) people visit sites like Ozb to seek lower prices on products that they are interested in, no?

I do agree that these prices are low for a phone like the N5, but we did expect it to be sold at this price range right? So not really a bargain if the prices are expected.

Again also IMO only, not attacking or flaming anyone. Just my thoughts.

(I did not +1 or -1 this post and will probably get one myself once the full reviews come out as well :D)

        • I like your thinking

      • ANDRIODbargain.

  • Bought 2x 16 GB WHITE

    Cancelled both.

but my credit card's available limit has been used up.

No spendings for the weekend.. yeaah :( :(

    • +2

      why did you cancel them?

      • +1

Was probably an impulse purchase? Haha I did that with my first TWO nexus 4 orders. Gave in on the 3rd :P

        • yeah..

          same story.. :(:(

  • +10

not a bargain.. should move to forum

  • +9

    rrp

    • +1

ridiculous. why was my neg revoked?
FYI I did buy the phone but not because it was a bargain but because I like the product, as many other people do. However, that doesn't make it a bargain.

    • Used versus brand new? Really?

    • -1

Outside the situational expandable storage, this phone outclasses the S4 in virtually every metric that matters. As for used? Really?

  • +6

As if any ozbargainer didn't know about the upcoming phone or rrp price.

Between this and the revelation that Autodesk gives away free software to students making front page deals, I think the consistency of the mods are slipping.

Quick, everyone post free applications on the Play Store while the mods are asleep!

    • +2

Well the mods removed many negs, including mine, even though the community upvoted these negs.

Guess there has been a paradigm shift in the ozbargain mantra. Always freebies and well known products with their launch RRP are now considered "bargains", and the mods personal opinions allow them remove community members negs because of this shift.

      It's a bit sad really.

      • +2

It is sad. We've been consistently told by administrators that ''it's all about what the community wants''. But the community +'s your comments and others but neg votes are removed by mods.

Fair enough, the community also voted the deal up pretty quickly so you could say that it's a valid front page deal.

But more and more it seems that this ''what the community wants'' reasoning is being used as a front for ''what's going to bring in most traffic to the website''.

Google ''Nexus 5 $399'' and you'll see this deal already comes up on first page results.

  • If the nexus 5 supply is anything like the nexus 4 supply, this will be considered a bargain soon enough. Plenty of people ended up paying significantly more than rrp to get their hands on a nexus 4 in the first couple of months.

    • +5

Bargains should be fact and not about speculation. A bargain is only a bargain if it is so at the time of posting, not for something which may or may not happen in future.

      • Bargains are subjective, that's why there's positive and negatives. All those iphone 4s for $500 people post as bargain here I'd never consider a bargain, but they keep appearing on here. I keep negging them though. :D

  • I'm thinking of buying one of these (16gb) for the missus as a christmas present, but I don't want to buy it right now. What are the chances of stock disappearing rapidly and me missing out if I don't buy now and hold off a few weeks?

    • Lemme get out my crystal ball…..

    • Already 3-4 weeks wait on 16 gb model. That's on black model, white dispatches faster it seems. :)

    • No one knows for sure. It's already much better than last year's launch. They've probably have more stock(or less people are buying).

Ordering a black one now is estimated that you'd get it early December. White seems a lot less popular and would arrive in less than 2 weeks.

    • Well, the signs aren't looking too bad, considering they haven't run out yet. But I would get onto it sooner rather than later. Since LG wouldn't be making as much profit from the N5 as they would one of their phones, they won't dedicate as much production capacity to it - therefore once the initial stock is up, it might take a while to replenish it.

  • How do these processors compare to Apple's?

    • +3

The S800 is a bit behind, since Apple's A7 is based on newer ARMv8 designs whereas the Krait 400 is older and based on ARMv7
The new PowerVR GPU is also more powerful than the Adreno 330 used here.

      • +9

Don't buy based on processing power.

Buy based on the ecosystem you want to be part of/ what devices suit you the most and cost.

$449AU for a Nexus 5 32GB LTE vs $999 iPhone 5S 32GB LTE. They both basically do the same thing, Android does somethings better than iOS and vice versa.

Ask yourself if the $550 difference is worth it!

        • Completely agree. I hope no one interpreted my comment as such - I was just answered lostn's question. The differences in hardware capability won't really be noticeable unless you're into really heavy 3D gaming (or benchmarks ;-) anyway. I've used an Xperia Z1 extensively (also has a S800) and the thing absolutely flies, so you'll be getting a nice experience either way.

        • Well these Apple people like to talk about their devices being "smooth" or "lag free" or whatever and when they use Android it's laggy and there's frequent pauses. Is this really an issue on Android hardware, or are they just being fanboys?

        • +1

Their definition of 'lag' tends to be talking about 1/10th of a second to react to a gesture, rather than a 1/20th of a second.

Practically, what it means is because the apple UI comes first, the interaction is more 'direct' and, say, moving a map around is more like putting your finger on a sheet of a map and moving it, than putting your finger on a map, moving, and the map momentarily 'sticking' before it moves.

However, when you step back, this is incredibly unimportant. The times are so small and the effect so momentary, that other things about the device have a much bigger impact on your usage (eg apple's lack of widgets). You quickly and easily get used to the difference. It's just that the apple crowd are so used to the UI predominating that when they pick up an Android phone, they notice the difference - and remark on it without thinking.

        • Sorry prospectivedarkness, meant to upvote but on a phone so it misinterpreted my touch. Can't seem to remove the down vote though ..

        • +1

Surely that would be better on the N5!!! :-p

      • Wow PD!

Flashback to 1998 RISC vs CISC and to 2005 "At Apple we'd never contemplate using Intel processors…" Excellent!!

  • +2

Just ordered a white 32mb, order confirmation suggests 2-7 days shipping. Quite happy with that.
This is the regular price, but IMO this handset looks like a bargain. Similar size and specs to SG4 at a much lower price point, plus LTE. After a frustrating time with my current Android phone, I really wanted both those features in my next phone. I am not a fan of all the add-ons that HTC and Samsung insists on putting on top of Android, plus the N5 is the first phone with 4.4 Kit Kat, which almost guarantees prompt future OS updates.
Also, for once, we Aussies are getting a WAY better deal than our international cousins. The AUS price includes GST and if you bought the same phone in the USA, you would have to pay State Sales Tax, unless you live in a state like New Hampshire, where it is not payable. The 32gb costs $449 here; in the UK, it's A$575!
Considering the current price of the HTC One and SG4, and don't even get me started on iPhone 5Ss, for the money, nothing appears to come close to the Nex5.

    • And we can even able to claim a 9% tax return if we are leaving Aus within 30days of purchase :)

  • Ships in 3-4 weeks. Expired deal?

    • Still November 8 for white versions. :)

      • why is the white version so unpopular?

        • +1

          Because black looks better.

    • Well it's not really a deal in the first place - this post should sit in the forums.

  • Regular SIM or microSIM?

    • microSIM.

  • where to buy screen protector? cant find any on ebay.

Finally bought it after cancelling the first 2 orders. Replacing my galaxy s4.. lol.

  • +1

I'm still waiting for a Crysis port to android, cant be too far off…

  • +1

Early orders have shipped from warehouse in HK, I received my tracking number at 1.42pm. Estimated delivery: Wednesday

edit: Not sure if they have physically left the warehouse
    Tracking event is as follows:
1:35 pm Shipment information sent to FedEx

    • What time (and time-zone) did you buy?

      • ~5.10AM AEDT (ie. within 10 minutes of launch)

  • Bit the bullet and ordered one. 16gb Black, dispatching approx 22/11/13

  • Got caught out on the Google Wallet fraud filter. When I clicked proceed to checkout I added a new CC. Then I got a dreaded 'Technical problems' screen and no way to complete the checkout. This was about 7 AM today when the shipping estimate was 1-2 days.

Then I opened an issue with Google Wallet and called them. They couldn't fix it there and had to 'escalate' it the Wallet team somewhere else. Now shipping estimate says 'Ships Nov 8'

Then 2 hours passed and another phone call to Google, the answer 'Gotta wait for Google Wallet' folks. The time estimate is now 'ships in 2-3 weeks'

6 hours have passed. No resolution, no ack from Google wallet folks yet, time estimate sits at 3-4 weeks.

Damn it Google, fix your sh*t so I can give you money. I now don't have any hope of enjoying a Nexus 5 before December.

    • UPDATE: Google took 24 hours to fix the issue. By then the phone shipping was estimated 2-3 weeks. I did alot of whinging in my help ticket and asked them to try to ship it to me before 3 weeks. Looks like it actually worked as it's now estimated to arrive to me on 5/11 (Tue) and I have a Fedex tracking number.

I still let them have it on the survey so they stick some new interns on this issue (out of sync between customer service and compliance teams).

If I do get my phone on the 5th then some of my faith in 'The Goog' is restored.
