  • my battery life was terrible on the Nexus 4.. until I uninstalled the VIRGINBLUE app… back to normal now :)

  • Good price for an excellent phone but my HTC One with the stock ROM is still such a nice phone and I can't stomach the upgrade.

  • +16

Good price on a good phone but not a bargain at RRP like has already been stated.

I am a Android fan but this is nothing but an announcement or advertising really.

The Toyota 86 is a hell of a car for 29k (excluding on road costs)
McDonalds 50c ice creams are good for the price and their $2 McDoubles

But posting the everyday RRP of the above will get a butt load of negs and the post deleted.

Seeings its already posted I might as well join the discussion.

I own the N4 and don't think its necessary to upgrade so soon, but I expect to get Kit-Kat very shortly which should be nice.

    • +4

Yeah, it's advertising for both Google and OzBargain.

      • And as a result, watch how fast his neg vote disappears

        All hail the new overlords!

    • +2

It's not a bargain in the sense it is RRP and has always been at this price.

It is a bargain in the sense that is a flagship australian stock phone for $419 delivered.

      • The Kindle Fire at RRP falls into a similar category.

I get where you are coming from, but in the past any 'deal' that is posted that is the RRP of the product will very quickly be removed, regardless of votes.

Here the mods are removing people's negs despite them being highly up voted and not removing the deal. It's about consistency, and motives from both parties. Will this pave the way for paid for advertisements on the front page in the deals area? Possibly.

        • +1

Google Play store is an Ozbargain affiliate and for those visitors not logged in, the deal link is an affiliate link. So what you suggest already exists in a way.

I don't know when the affiliate cookie expires so it's possible other transactions placed at other times in the Play store are affiliated to OzBargain.

        • The Kindle Fire is a good tablet for the price.

There's has been a few deals that the mods have left up because it had received a lot of positive votes in a short amount of time.

Just because a product hasn't been reduced in price, doesn't mean it isn't a bargain.(yes, I realized this is a little contradicting to my previous comment.)

    • The Toyota 86 is a hell of a car for 29k (excluding on road costs)
McDonalds 50c ice creams are good for the price and their $2 McDoubles

But posting the everyday RRP of the above will get a butt load of negs and the post deleted.

Yet this post gets hundreds of + votes. So clearly people by and large believe that the Nexus 5 is a bargain even if other products would not be considered such at RRP.

I don't think it's a "bargain" in the traditional sense of "x% off" but the votes suggest that people find it helpful so who the hell cares? If it was truly not a deal it'd get neg bombed and forgotten like the other things you speak of and nothing of consequence would be lost.

      • Except McDonalds ice creams are called 30 cent cones, because they were 30 cents.

So being 50 cents is obviously not worthy of an OZBargain.

  • Thanks OP. purchased one this morning and its already shipped. thats great.

    • Wow really? What time did u order?

    • Interesting I ordered at around 8am and its still saying "Leaves warehouse by 5 November 2013."

    • oh mine got shipped as well :)
      hopefully get it on monday!

      • Monday? You do realize it's shipped from Hong Kong.

        • Monday is the estimated delivery date for quite a few people's orders, including mine…

It is possible considering it's only about 9hrs on the plane ;-)

        • was crazy i DID end up getting on monday. Most ridiculous shipping. Ordered friday received monday O.o

    • I have 'Shipping exception' :\

  • +3

I really didnt think the post would cause so this much drama. I did put a post up in the forums at the same time, but that was deleted, so make of that whatever you will.

    • Don't worry the mods here don't seem to care as long as someone posts this 'deal'. You or someone else, doesn't matter :)

      • +4

Interesting that this deal post triumphed over the forum post.

In cases like this you will find that the voting system is highly biased towards positive votes being accumulated, at the same time dampering potential negative votes.

There are dozens of comments expressing the view that this is not a bargain, and some of those comments have been +'d 20 and even over 30 times.

Many users cannot be bothered voting negative even if that is their intention because voting neg requires a comment, others don't want to upset the apple cart or fear reprisal based on previous experience.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to post.

        • +2

Hmm! Weighing things up: 20 - 30 people in a huff on one side…

And on the other side 230 (and growing) people giving a positive vote.

Plus a bunch of people who have indicated that they have purchased but who haven't bothered to give a + vote to the OP…

And you claim bias against the mods because they agree with the vast majority.

          Okay.

        • Actually there are a lot more than 20-30 people in a ''huff'' (using your dismissive language). More than 50 users have +'ed one particular neg comment, there are also high numbers of +'es on other comments, not all by the same users.

Early on in the deal there was a higher rate of users negging the deal, but they were quickly put in their place, not necessarily by biased mods but by a highly biased voting system that does not produce a result that is representative. Therefore the neg rate dropped quickly as users discovered there was no point doing so in such a biased environment.

You make the false assumption that just because somebody purchased the phone, they also believe the deal warrants a + vote. On the flip side, people who don't believe the deal warrants a + vote or even voted neg, may have actually purchased the phone. The issue comes down to whether the person believes the deal belongs on the front page or in the forums as an announcement.

The main point I'm trying to make is that the overly simplified and biased ''plus-neg equation'' is not a true representation of people's attitude towards the deal—for reasons that I have mentioned here and in previous comments—and for other reasons that I can't be bothered expanding on now.

If you can't see that the results are skewed even lightly to moderately, well that's completely fine, I accept that and I will be quiet from now on (I hear whispers of ''thank god'').

        • +1

OK If there is modding going on and -ve votes are cancelled, I can see why there would be skewing. But you say:

Early on in the deal there was a higher rate of users negging the deal, but they were quickly put in their place, not necessarily by biased mods but by a highly biased voting system that does not produce a result that is representative. Therefore the neg rate dropped quickly as users discovered there was no point doing so in such a biased environment.

I don't get this comment at all. Are you saying there are sociological effects at play where people don't want to neg a popular deal? I don't know if I agree with that. I think allot of people would have negged if they really thought it was that bad a bargain. The truth is that the discussion is about whether something that is sold for RRP can be classified as a bargain, not about whether this phone represents outstanding value for the price. I think distance from RRP is not an indication, you (and others) think otherwise. That's fine. But how is the voting system itself highly biased and produces unrepresentative results?

  • bah i dont want to pay for shipping again when the case is available. wth

  • I was about to cancel my order for a 16GB but it said my order is already shipped ! So bad luck

    • +3

      That level of show off…

  • This is the normal price so people shouldn't feel compelled to buy because the price probably won't get higher. Therefore IMO doesn't constitute a bargain.

    • +3

The N4 was at least $100 more expensive at Harvey Norman and other retailers when it was released, so your statement for the N5 may not necessarily be true.

    • +8

Last I checked, this wasn't OzDiscount.

      • Excellent point for the no-RRP-fascism tendency. (phew shaved very close to invoking Godwin's law!)

    • Ahmm judging by the N4 there is a high probability this will be the cheapest price for a while (and not the highest like you claim), perhaps barring grey imports (that also appeared only later in the product lifecycle).

  • Black 32GB & 16GB seem to be gone in Australia…

"We are out of inventory. Please check back soon."

  • +2

Having 802.11AC supported should also be a selling point
as compare to iphone 5s which only support up to 802.11n

  • out of stock

    • White is still available for me…

    • Only black 32GB.

      • They were both out of stock but now only 16gb black out of stock.
Oredered white 16gb with 28 degrees in case if google dropped their prices :p
Thinking to sell the note 2

        • I just accidently ordered one a few minutes ago when I entered my credit card details…
I was trying to get rid of my AmEx cards from the wallet because stupid Google doesn't explain that you can't use them, it just gives the cryptic error "An unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later."

        • yeah, I'll use that line on my wife when I buy one.

    • For me (Brisbane FWIW) currently shows:-
16 black - Out of inventory
32 black - Out of inventory
16 white - Leaves warehouse by 8 Nov
32 white - Leaves warehouse in 2-3 weeks

  • deal expired?

    • Only black expired for me, are you getting both "out of stock" ???
I can still see both sizes in white

  • I ordered a 32GB White and 16GB Black at 5:10am, both are sent out :D

    Anticipated ship date :
    Fri 01/11/2013

your gallery app doesn't even support animated gifs.

Yes, the gallery app is arguably one of the weakest points of Android's default apps these days (though I've never met anyone who complains about gif support above all else), but if you don't like it, it took me literally a one word search and a tap to find a quality one that does.

especially unforgivable is no removable battery

There's virtually only one flagship device on the market that offers this - it's an outlier not the standard. I don't know why this, of all things, is 'unforgivable'.

      32gb is definitely not enough

      For you, maybe.

I heard Vibration ringtones are not even available on a nexus.

      You heard wrong.

Look, speaking in terms of software; yes Nexus device are a comparative clean slate and you might have to tinker with it to get it how you like it. You also don't get whole GB's of unremovable crap installed on your device, so it has its pros and con's. Speaking in terms of hardware; this is obviously not the device for you. That doesn't mean it has any less value for money - everything has its pros and con's, and nothing is outright, black and white better or worse because of these things. You basically complained that this phone isn't a Galaxy, but it never claims to be and it doesn't have to be, to be a good phone.

Edit: looking back at your past comments in Nexus threads, it seems you have quite a vendetta against them. Probably shouldn't have fed the troll, but I'm not deleting it all now.

      • "it took me literally a one word search and a tap to find a quality one that does."

Maybe off topic but which gallery app did you choose?

      • I am no troll. I had the HTC Dream day one then HTC Desire HD then Note 1, 2 and 3. I knew of and have seen every Nexus and was constantly disappointed in major features being removed and just the general Google attitude.

The Nexus 4 having a LG brother with removable battery no on screen buttons and micro sd card plus usb otg working left me wondering what was the deal. Then LG practically stated it's made on a budget.

        • The deal is that Google are a company that offers all its services through cloud computing and therefore wants you to live on the cloud, not on your SD card. Hate it or accept it, it is what it is.

Edit: no Nexus device had an SD slot bar the first one.

  • Delivery

So I can't have this delivered to a PO Box and I'm mobile during BH. Does anyone know how the delivery works if I put my home address? They don't just leave it on the doorstep do they?

    • Regularly they'll leave a little card so you can fetch your parcel in your local post office. And you can also call FedEx to arrange a pickup.

      • or if you have had fedex deliveries before and have a 'authority to leave' on file they will just leave it at your door..

  • Got one last night . Eagerly waiting for 3 more weeks.

  • Does anybody know where these ship from?

    • Estimated delivery time is 3-4 business days and it is shipped by FedEx.. So most likely from somewhere in Aus?

    • Hongkong

    • accroding to FedEx tracking -> YUEN LONG HK

    • Also from here: KWAI CHUNG, HK

Mine is estimated arrival on Tue

  • I placed my order at 9:15am yesterday for the 32gb black model, at the time of ordering, it said "dispatched from warehouse in 2-3 weeks", however at around 10pm that night, I get an email saying it has shipped and I should expect it by monday.

I'm not complaining, it was a pleasant surprise, did this happen to anyone else?

    • +1

Yes mine said ships by 8 November but received an email last night saying it had shipped and tracking shows Tuesday delivery. Very happy :)

  • Looks like the 2.300 batt wont be enough for the Full HD IPS screen.

I have a Sony Z1 and finally a smartphone that can last more than a day. 1% battery drain overnight with wifi off. Not to mention super easy to wash with soap under the tap to keep it sparkling white and free of smudges. I dropped it the other day and it was tile Vs phone = no damage.

But then again the Nexus is really Cheap

Ordered late afternoon Friday 16 GB White

Called the 1800-093-181 just now. requesting a tax invoice. He seems to understand what I need.
Got an email from "The Google Play Support Team" requesting

To provide you with a GST invoice, we'll first need the following:

    • Your Customer GST Registration number. If you don't have a GST registration number but would still like to have a GST invoice, we can provide one at your request.
    • The complete address for the customer associated with the GST registration number, if relevant

Please respond to this email with the above information and we'll be happy to provide an invoice.

For future reference, our GST registration numbers by country are:

    Ireland - 9825613N
    UK - GB 117 313 544
    Spain - N0072508E
    Germany - DE 283 139 298
    Australia - 54 341 015 381
    France - FR68752925594

    • Wow - what an inefficient system. Very unlike Google. So I guess I need to request a GST tax invoice for business and incl my ABN in the request. So do I really have to ring them - or is there an email address I can use.

I'm tempted to start a Google Drive form for others to use for this - if I could be bothered to open a new gmail account from which to set it up!! C'mon Google Play - really? A phone call?

      • I've got that e-mail before too. Like I said before it took me 11 e-mails to get the Tax Invoice.

  • Having no expandable storage is one of my biggest pet peeves. With such a beautiful screen I find myself storing a large amount of movies to watch on the go. I also use my phone as my portable music player. While I am not as overzealous as some others to the degree of boycotting the phone, I feel it detracts from the incentive to buy because a phone is a significant investment (for me at least).

However early reviews state this is a wonderful device and I am sure everyone who has purchased one will enjoy it greatly.

    • Yeah I agree, however at this point it is no more than wishful thinking hoping for a device with SD card. BTW, Google could also easily offer a 64gb or even 128gb device (for more obviously) but are clearly not interested in offering this.

From my perspective I bought one and we'll see how I go (currently have chock full 48gb on my SGS2). Worst case scenario this will last me until next wave of flagships being released (mid next year) and I will just sell this and buy the one that suits me best.

  • As far as battery life goes, this phone is one of very few that have a new chip that saves power when on LTE. It may help a bit but time will tell hey?

  • +1

So I ordered a 16GB Black late yesterday afternoon and at the time it said 2 to 3 weeks. Now I get an email saying "Shipped"

    :-)

    • you so lucky , I order white one at 11:50 am and have to wait until 8/11 :(

  • +4

How is this a bargain? Its full blown retail and therefore not really a bargain.

Now if some store actually had it in stock or was going to get it and thereby saving us at least the $20 shipping fee or something Id say fair enough.

Also kindly note for $63 more (than the 32gb nexus 5 model) for the 32GB LG G2 you can get:
    -5.2" vs 4.95"
    -13.1MP camera vs 8MP
    -2.1MP front camera vs 1.3MP
    -IR Blaster
    -3000mAh battery vs 2300mAh
    -TD-LTE
-ddr3 vs unclear ram type (for now)
Only $63 more and you get all the above in the LG G2.

So what does the Nexus 5 have over the LG G2?
+++Corning glass 3 as opposed to Corning glass 2
+++Out of the box 'wireless charging'
+++Latest android versions/updates pushed OTA and comes out the box with android 4.4 kitkat.

However, to inject some sense here, you can just as easily wipe/remove the standard bloat-ware crap that comes with the LG and run a custom rom or just a simple launcher (if you cant wait for an official update OR if you dont like the bloatware) and some of the custom roms like paranoid and cyanogenmod have OTA updates too. LG G2 officially is supposed to be getting 4.4 by end of this month though if you cant wait for the official bloatware version or dont want it those custom roms will have it a lot quicker and will be equally as fast and streamlined as rest.

    • well then you have your answer? Is there any space for discussion? Is there any need at all?

      • The nexus 5 still has its place…. It all depends on your preferences and priorities and as we are all different nothing wrong with that.
But to make an informed purchase/choice I think its important to consider the competition (or in this case the phone which the nexus 5 for all intents and purposes was trimmed down from).

    • Only $63 more and you get all the above in the LG G2.

Is that Australian stock or grey import?

      • -3

you can check dwi and see for yourself cheapest ive seen it so far

      • I think probably is grey stock

      • Definitely gray import.

        • Once on sale here this coming week should be able to get deals etc

    • +2

There is one thing I learned with my SGS2 and that is without access to the manufacturers hardware drivers, every custom ROM (not based on the manufacturers ROM which go as far as the manufacture support of the device and on the same time scale) will have issues. If you look at the N4 and its LG equivalent I believe you will find it was the same there. Therefore for me I would rather go with a device that Google releases the ROM too as soon as the update is available, where I know the custom ROM community will have no challenges in implementing access to all the hardware.

      • You have a valid point which I had noted too in regards to official google releases etc
But the LG G2 does seem to have an active community on XDA which should keep increasing seeing its relatively new too.

        • Yes it sure does. I was not commenting on the size of the community but rather on the limitations ROMs would have despite the size of the community on XDA.

For example, there are currently only 4 Android 4.3 ROMs for the Optimus G on XDA:
          http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320817

And you can see that the G2 has some issues in the Cyanogen 4.3 official nightlies:
          http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2495859

        • Ahh thats what you meant. Im sure those issues will iron out in due time (if they havent already in the latest build). Of course one could just wait for the official kitkat 4.4 release from lg which might be end of this month and then either install that with a launcher of your choice OR a stripped down clean rom using it.

        • Not sure what you mean "iron out over time" the Optimus G example (as well as any sammy phone since the first galaxy) shows that is not usually the case. Again, without access to the drivers code, the community is restricted.

I am not saying the G2 is not a great phone or a great buy, but similarly like you are focused on informing others so am I.

Buy the LG if you are happy to trust LG with updates and happy with as far as they go. Don't put your trust in XDA to support the phone past when LG does as in all likelihood support would not be 100%, and there will always be some issues.

      • 100% true. That's why I'm back to Nexus 5 after S4. The google edition rom was good, but custom rom support on Nexus phones is always way better than the rest.

        • Yes the massive diversity and vastness of roms and mods is on nexus's side.

I personally have grown out of the whole install 20 roms, tinker every single aspect to death, tweak other bits etc. So I personally would want the cleanest yet most functional, streamlined and practical rom and then would set things up the way I want them to be and call it a day. (no longer interested in perpetual tinkering)

        • Neither am I. I install one rom and keep it for at least a month generally. However, I'm sick of unstable custom roms. Only nexus phones have stable custom roms, which is why I won't get the LG G2.

Even though it's good for the price, i dont want to touch that terrible touchwiz copying UI.

        • Im not worried about sorting it out as have done so on every phone I've had for a while now. Should be able to touch feel see hear at your local store coming week

    • Just did a quick check on dwi for the lg g2, they want $540 for the 16 gb version delivered. So around $120 more, and you can't claim back gst. Its a bigger saving if you want the 32 gb version though.

      • huh? why would you want the 16gb when 32gb is cheaper lol?
Like I said you want to claim GST, local stock or whatever else wait till coming week and then see what the best local price you can get for the 32gb model would be….

        • 32 gb version is $7 more, so I don't know where you get the cheaper part from?

        • $532 is the price for 32gb delivered. $532 is less than your $540
          http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/LG-G2-D802-32GB.a…

        • $15 delivery for me, at the cheapest shipping rate. So $547

        • Perhaps you are not in a metro area? As its clearly free shipping to metro areas.

On another note there is a rumour that LG may release a google edition of the phone end of this month which may contain an extra 1gb of ram ie 3gb in total. However, at this point it is a rumour and not substantiated yet.

    • Update more differences:
      -G2 has 1080p 60fps recording, while N5 is only 30fps
-G2 front camera can record up to 1080p vs 720p
-For audiophiles G2 supports true playback of 24-bit/192kHz files

No 4K video recording on either phones though LG had stated they might enable it on kitkat.

      • Dolby mobile sound enhancement
        -Stereo FM radio
-LG Quad beat 2 headphones (N5 comes with none)

  • Yup, ordered mine yesterday morning once I got into the office and delivery for the 32gb model was for Nov 8- and as mentioned earlier by others, received notification last night that delivery will be on Wed.. YAY .. Tuesday being a public holiday for the race that stops the nation. Except for Fedex vans carrying nexus 5 phones.

  • I ordered a 16GB black yesterday about lunch time (WA time) and received an email saying it would be shipped on 22/11/13. It did say "Ships in 2-3 weeks" when I placed the order.

I thought it was fine since it's a surprise xmas present for the missus, but was very surprised to receive an email today to say it had been shipped from HK, along with the FedEx tracking info :)
