    Region Free?

  • Are there really no cheap region-switchable players anymore?

I got a Soniq-branded way back, which is DVD region free, and Blu-ray region switchable.
However the majority of American BDs I've seen are not region locked, and you can buy most things cheap from the UK which is the same region as here.

The no-name player seems to work the same as any other. Its just a reference design, with software from the American chip-maker. Same UOP restrictions. Plays MKV, but can be fussy on the codecs sometimes.

Does a branded player (Philips) have any advantages?

  • I'm looking for a blu-ray player but won't buy it if its not region free on principle.

    • Good luck trying to find a brand name BD region switchable player. You may have to resort to some thing such as the Laser BLU-BD1000 player which is BD region switchable but that's a cheap non top brand player. If you must have a brand name you won't find one though well not unless you pay considerable money. There's always the Oppo blu-ray players but they're like $699 + an extra $150 for the Pro change kit which adds BD region switchable feature. So that's $849 right there.

You'll be waiting a long long time for a blu-ray player then if you're only choice is a brand name BD region switchable player.

  • last year BDP3200 for $63

    • Was it a newer model than this? how could it be cheaper last year?
