There are a ton of online syncing and storage services, but not all of them locally encrypt your data for higher security. Just out of limited beta, Tresorit is a new Dropbox alternative with client-side encryption. The company offers 5GB of free space, but for a limited time Lifehacker readers can grab 50GB free for life.

Tresorit's biggest selling point is the strong security. Your files and folders are encrypted before they're uploaded to the cloud

To get technical about it:

Files are encrypted with AES-256 before being uploaded to the cloud. Additional security is provided before upload by HMAC message authentication codes applied on SHA-512 hashes. Encrypted files are uploaded to the cloud using TLS-protected channels.

On the downside, there's no web-based access for your files, people you share folders with will also need the software installed, and it takes a few seconds longer for your synced files to appear on another computer (probably because of the encryption that has to happen first).

    Sorry Mac Users

Don't be sorry, it's their fault they bought an inferior product

    • -2

I think you just pissed off some fanboys!

    • +2

I have a Macbook Air for uni and a sli gaming laptop.
No way is the Mac inferior, they are better for productivity and organization
But my bad boy Y500 blows the Mac in terms of performance.
Unless I'm gaming, I spend most of my time on my mac.
I have an 8X which is an awesome phone but I don't prefer the interface on the laptop cause I only use the desktop

      • Macbook Air might be a good piece of hardware but OS X doesn't blow smoke in terms of productivity or organisation. Having shell is nice but being Office and easier file system management is nicer.

Just signed up. Thanks for the heads up.

…logged in, ran the application and it crashed…."Assertion Failed"

    • working for me, currently uploading

      • +1

Application crashed when it was trying to login.
Not to worry - just reopened the app and appears to be working fine now.
I can confirm the 50gb free space.

    This is interesting:
    http://tresorit.com/contest-rules

They're holding a contest and will award 10,000 USD (and the answer to the 'Ultimate Question in Life') to anyone who can hack their systems and find the answer to the Ultimate Question.

    • +4

We already know the answer… 42

    • +1

      The mice will confirm

    • +2

I'll create a GUI interface using Visual Basic. See if I can hack the client side encryption.

  • Pardon my ignorance,…Are the required apps Mac compatible?

  • How do I know if I got the 50GB? I accidently installed the non-lifehacker edition but removed it and reinstalled the right one (blame the thumbnail).

      • Thanks, mine didn't pop up until I restarted it for the third time.

        Looks like I've got 5GB :(.

    • lol I did the same. So is that it? Any way to get the 50 GB offer? :(
Wish OP linked to the actual lifehacker file, not their homepage..

      • sorry :(

it wont allow me to change the url

        • Lol, no need to apologise, I should've been more careful. Thanks for sharing the deal.

        • Email [email protected], they seem to be hooking people up with 50GB if you initially got 5GB for whatever reason.

  • So many cloud options!

Tresorit (weird name?) uses Windows Azure instead of Amazon for anyone wondering.
Can't decide whether to use my 20GB Dropbox, 50GB Box or this! Ugh…

    • -1

I wouldn't use Box until (unless they've already done so) fix/implement/allow creating and managing sub-folders. It just gets too messy to save 50GB of data in a flat folder.

also "tresorit" = "treasure it", although it's somewhat inaccurate translation from english to french if that's what they actually intended (i.e. "tresor" isn't a verb in french)

      • +2

        Box allows sub folders

      • +1

        Box is great.

    • What about the 100GB Zoolz?

      • only issue is capped/throttled 1Mbps upload speed… :(

      • Signed up for this too. Thanks!

    • +1

It's Anglicised-Frog for 'Treasure It' - "<i>Trésor</i>" in "Surrender-ese" (Froggish) is 'treasure' in proper talk (English).

That's also why each folder-set is called a 'tresor' (note there's no accent on the e: proper-talk writing doesn't need - or do - stupid accents that the smelly foreigners use when they scrawl their gibberish).

If you read the FAQ on their encryption techniques, you will see a lot of "Euranglais" (Euro-English) like "How my password is managed in Tresorit?"… which sounds a bit like Manuel from Fawlty Towers if you say it right. Had they left off the question mark it would have passed muster.

  • Pretty cool idea their hacking contest at http://tresorit.com/contest-rules

They've got a good sense of humour and are willing to have their product tested. Solid marketing effort and confidence in their product!

  • Thanks =)

  • Not convinced. I should be able to give my own encryption key before I can trust sensitive files to an online service.

    • All of these things are primarily for a <b>sense</b> of security - I'm also chary of uploading anything sensitive to server storage unless (a) the connection is straight-through SSL; (b) the app (if any) is open-source; (c) the encryption keys (and choice of algorithm cascade) is under my direct control. Hence, to my way of thinking anything properly sensitive requires TrueCrypt - almost nothing else will do: even things with good key-control like FileLocker are not open source. Syncing with TrueCrypt is a pain, though.

That said: by and large that level of paranoia is only relevant if you're storing stuff that has legal consequences if it falls into the wrong hands - i.e., sensitive client files or negotiation notes, or stuff that might interest some .gov tax-fed goon.

  • Please check this from their support forums: https://support.tresorit.com/entries/23572267-Can-I-recover-…

  • i only got 5GB

    • 5GB here too. I used the Lifehacker link

    • Click on the "Registration Link" above, not the tresorit link

    • I so nearly made the same mistake - you need to sign up through the LifeHacker link.

  • Terrorists getting in on cloud storage now?

    • lol took me a while to get that

  • Yes

  • nice one. Do they have an iphone/android app ?

Just checked their forum. Both apps are coming in june :)

  • Hmmm..them not being able to provide password recovery or password reset options sort of worries me..

Kingsoft license is valid up to the end of 2013

  • +1

The free license for the standard Kingsoft 2012 is just for a year until end of 2013 (2012.11.1 - 2013.12.31)

  • No. I just installed it and its the full thing without time limits. The email basically meant that the key is usable up to the end of the year (presumably the newer version wont work with the same key from that point on).

  • +2

downloaded and installed. Good to just get the 50GB, but seriously, nothing comes close to the functionality and usability of dropbox IMO

  • I get a "The service is unavailable." message going to the 50GB registration link now…

    • we ozbargained their server

      • Or someone decided to "test" their security claims.

  • Their registration server seems to be down.

    SEEMS RELIABLE.

  • Anyone else getting the same key each time?

  • (^^For Kingsoft)

  • registration link is down!!!

    • The power of ozbargain !!

We cant really tell how many actual clicks on the link as ozbargain counts the clicks made on the main url submitted and the registration link is posted in main body of deal

Im guessing if the main url has ~ 1500 clicks, then the registration link would have at least double making it around 3000 clicks, but again its a guestimate

Would 3000 registrations be enough to cripple their server (also not counting the registrations coming from lifehacker and other forums)

  • It's back up.

    • Thanks, got it.

  • Do you retain the encryption key or does Tresorit?

  • I prefer using a better known provider like Google Drive. They will be around in a years time. Just encrypt the Google Drive content with a service like Syncdocs http://syncdocs.com

    • Just encrypt the Google Drive content with a service like Syncdocs http://syncdocs.com

      But its not free

Access all the power features, sync unlimited files and PCs for only $1.66 a month.

  • So what happens if you have to reinstall your PC or buy a new PC altogether? I'm guessing there would be some way to do this without losing access to your files?

    • You remember your password.

  • Just registered and got the 50GB. Thanks OP.

  • "The service is unavailable."

    • "The service is unreliable."

  • complete registration.I got 50Gb

  • can anyone tell me how big the file is for initial download, On sat connection with limited d/ls :(
