      • I was told their were no 840/006 in any of the HN stores Australia wide and thats why they substituted it for this model.
If somehow you manage to get the 840/006 then well done as i mentioned above i would have taken that one if i still had the choice

      • No show - cannot fulfill orders and they have offered me a refund.

I was one of the earlier orders as well so only a lucky few would have been allocated stock.

Revoked +ve and they are lucky I can't change it to a -ve.

  • I just got offerred a display model of the 840/006 and I am unsure whether or not I should take it because it has probably been on for 12 months and being used/abused by customers. The guy at citicross said to call HN online as he couldn't offer any discount. I called online and they said they will get back to me. Still considering taking the display model but honestly don't see why they didn't just offer $50 off or something. You can't change the terms of a sale and not change the price imho.

    • I hate to have been placed in your scenario, as much as i wanted that model im not sure if i would have taken an ex display model, expecially if its not going to be further reduced in price.

      • Yeah thanks for posting as I said others (you) were offerred the 940 for the same price - I would much prefer that over the display model 840. If it were only displayed for a month or so it might be ok but it's likely been sitting there being abused for the last 12 months or something.

Best outcome for me is if they offer $100 or more off now that would be a bargain!

  • No contact at all from HN for me. Fingers crossed for 840/006.

  • Surprise….Just got offered a U950-00S. Asked for an extra 8Gb of RAM for the anger I feel.

    • Actually ok about it all now.

I get a much better graphics card, an extra USB 3 port, and replaceable battery and much easier to upgrade. I am now also happy with Windows 8 as I would have upgraded it anyway.,

Aluminium would have been nice. Shame U940 is 100g heavier and 1mm thicker.

      • Man have I been screwed around by harvey norman. I was phoned by HN citycross (adelaide city store) on saturday saying they were out of stock of the u840 and offerred me a display model without any further discount. I asked him if he could offer some money off considering it was a display model and he said that's HN onlines responsibility here is there number.

I phoned them up on monday and they said they'd speak to their manager and get back to me by the end of the day, they didn't call me. I contacted live chat asking for a call back in the morning and they said they would but they didn't. I then contacted live chat around 2pm and they said they would call me back and they didn't so I by 3:30 I called them and they said they can't do any discounting only the store can.

I said to avoid me going around in circles can you call the store, they did and the store apparently told them no they wont discount any further and that I can either take it or get a refund.

So I called citycross and spoke to a manager who made absolutely no effort to keep me happy, he said it's a $1200 laptop reduced to $555 and no further discounts would apply. I kept on arguing with him saying about how my transaction was with HN online for a brand new laptop. He even said that I couldn't return the laptop if it was in bad condition as it was a display model. I said doesn't that go against my rights to a refund under australian consumer law? and he didn't really know the answer. I think in the end he sensed the call was going nowhere so said he would take it up with the owner. I asked for a u940 and he said no. He said that I should come in and inspect the condition of the display model but I don't have time.

All I really want is them to knock $50 off and I'd be happy. I know them saying I can't return it is bollocks so if it does turn out to be in bad condition I WILL return. I know I could just say nope just give me a refund right now except that I already bought a $100 laptop off ebay for the cashback.

        • If that was me $50 off for an ex display model wouldn't be enough, either a $450 discount or a new computer.

        • they called me back just then and refused to budge even though others have received u940s at no extra cost :(

I decided to cave in on the condition that I can return it if I am not happy with the condition (even though I didn't need this condition because I know my rights) Reason being is if I get a refund I'm stuck with a $100 laptop from ebay that I don't want or need that I'd have to resell.

My complain to harvey norman online about them though because it makes HN online look bad.

        • That said the battery is probably stuffed so overall it's probably not a very good deal.

        • HNs should not mislead customers of their rights, how could he be the manager if he does not know the basic consumer law?

        • This laptop has a toshiba software installed which tells you the condition of the battery, being a display unit on the shelf I would run the software to check it out.

        • How'd you go in the end?

        • I accepted the display model because they weren't going to budge and refused to offer anything else and I still prefer it over a refund. They also offerred a free carry case yay! (sarcasm). It'll probably arrive tomorrow or the next day. As long as it's in decent enough condition it'll be ok. I do worry about the battery having been probably in a fully charged state without being cycled for 8 months or so.

        • Have sent an online complaint to HN about this and also posted a complaint on their facebook page. Annoyed that what I believe and what the HN Online CSR believed to be a reasonable request was denied by a rude and defensive manager who also didn't understand Australian Consumer law. Also annoyed at how I was forced to deal with HN City Cross which is a franchise when I actually bought from HN Online - I would expect to deal with the business I actually paid not some undefined party.

        • I also sent an online complaint but I don't think that it will change anything. Just to vent a little frustration for myself more than anything. I wasn't even notified that my 840/006 was out of stock until I called them up today. They were planning to leave me hanging for god knows how long

    • Which model did they end up giving you? as you mention U950-00S and you have a link for the U940

      • Sorry U940-OOS with 8Gb of RAM.

        It is on its way.

  • Does the U940 have Bluetooth. There i no mention in the specs!

    http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/ultrabook/u94…

    • It has bluetooth Ver 4

I am very happy with this ultra book, chippys youtube review is spot on, it takes abit to get used to the keyboard if you havent used this type before and i love the fact that it can be easily upgraded.
Ram can be upgraded to 16 Meg using 2 x 8meg modules
H/D can be upgraded to SSD
Battery can be swapped over when the time comes

      • What's the screen like. Lots of reviews say it is poor.

        • Screen is average, you need to be sitting in front of it, if you move or tilt it then you start losing its contrast, not sure what the right term for it is called. im used to this as my other laptop has the same type of panel.
I watched a short mkv file on it and colours were good.

  • I was offered the Satellite U940/018 or the Satellite U840W/001 at the end.

Ended up taking the U940 although the RRP on the 840W was quite a lot more.

That wide screen 21:9 is a bit of an unknown from a business perspective and I had to go for the safer choice.

    • U940/018 is the slightly faster version of the U940/00S BUT has one less USB 3 port. Weird.

      http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/compare?sku=PSU6VA-0180…

Now I am also worried the 00S doesn't have Bluetooth!!

      It better have.

      • Can anyone confirm the U940/018 has two USB 3 ports?

        • It does. :-)

        • you are right, just checked mine, strange as the Toshiba site says only 1

  • I ordered and paid for the U840/006 and had no contact from Harvey Norman for a week so I called up and they told me that they didn't have any. They offered me the U840W/002 which does not have a dedicated graphics card and I do not like the wide screen and the strangely spaced keyboard so I wanted to take a refund. However the salesperson told me that it did have a 2gb dedicated graphics and insisted I go in store to take a look so I took a fairly long trip there only to be told that he made a mistake and they could not offer me any better. Horrible store and obvious baiting and switching going on

    • Yes their comp systems says it has 2Gb graphics.

  • I am waiting on the arrival of my 8Gb U940/00S and a tax invoice!

I need the tax invoice for the $250 cash back.

Man their online support is poor trying to get a receipt or anything! Phone and online are poor.

  • Harvey Norman are being super helpful (Chris from Melb is at least). We are sourcing a U940/018 as it has BT and the 00S doesn't. Will hopefully have it resolved today.

    • Thanks to Everton Park (Jae) I now have a U940-018. I will be requesting a refund through online for the U940/00S.

There are some super helpful Harvey Norman staff around and Chris and Joe are simply legends.

      • If you want to ever get this resolved go to Chris in Deniliquin and Jae at Everton Park.

  • Just submitted my cash back.

Quick Q about the U940….is the Fn key back lit…mine isn't.

    • mine isn't either

  • I managed to get a U940/00S (for my originally purchased U840/006) and collected today. Was offered an ex-display U840W/001 beforehand which I politley turned down :) I guess I should try and haggle an extra 4GB out of them but I'm pretty happy with the deal.

    • U940/00S. That's what I had. Much happier however with the U940/018 (this years model) as I need BT. Slightly faster processor as well.

I got them to throw in the 4Gb as well. HN in the end really have come through. Nice work HN.

Only thing that is just average is the back-lit keyboard. Not supper consistent.

  • BTW anyone else seeing this?

The keyboard back-light is somehow disabled when coming out of sleep. FN-Z does nothing.

    A reboot fixes it.

    • im not sure what you mean, mine seems ok but i may be miss interpreting your comment.

      • There is no backlight when coming out of sleep. It is off and can't be turned on. Fn-Z does nothing.

I have reset the Tosh Settings and it appears fine now.

The whole backlit keyboard is pretty average to be honest. Can't see the diff between the two levels and it is brighter on the left then the right.

But better then not having one.

        • Unit is being replaced again. :-)

        • Replacement 018 is the same. Must be getting crap in the construction as the 00S was MUCH better.

        • what problems are you having?

        • Just an inconsistent back-light. Brighter on the left then the right. New one is the same. 00S was much better.

          How is your 018??

        • Oh also can you please install and run Batterycare?

My 45Wh batter is showing as a 39Wh one.

          https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D418639_78151076_76308

  • The program is showing you your battery total capacity is 39000mwh,im wondering if this is just a bug in the software.
The reason i say this is because the battery is rated at 45000 and you have used 13.33% so far and when you do the maths that leaves you with around 39000.
Best thing to do is charge your battery fully and then start the program and see what the results are and if its a bug in the program or maybve a problem with the battery.
I will install it and give it a try and see what mine says, will do it during the week when i get some time.

  • Tried two seperate programs. Both say it is a 45Wh batter but max capacity is now 39Wh.

  • Thanks Lopied. Can you also confirm how consistent yoru backlight is on the keyboard?

    • +1

looks like once the lappy has gone to sleep the backlight doesnt want to work, i need to reset it to get it working again.
i am so close to dumping win8 and putting on win7, as much as i try to get used to win8 i just like win7 100 times better.

      • Exactly my problem… glad you understand.

Now my other question about the backlight is it consistently lit across the keyboard? Mine is brighter on the left then the right. And I have checked two machines!

        • Mine is constant all over, just the sleep bug is a pain in the ass

        • Bugger….

In terms of the sleep bug have not seen it on my latest one.

Remember you saying this "im not sure what you mean, mine seems ok but i may be miss interpreting your comment."

        • yes, i wasnt half sure i understood what you meant but i get it know. the stupid thing just worked a few minutes ago, im not sure if its a hardware or software fault.

        • What I remember doing and not sure if it is solved or not. Go to Tosh Settings and reset everything to default.

      • Classic shell is all you need.

  • After lodging a complaint online the owner of the Citycross store contacted me personally and was very polite and sorted everything out. I now have a U940/018 coming by courier tomorrow and will update when it arrives.

I believe that HN online should keep better stock records to prevent overselling and a lot of this hassle would be avoided. Great to see that their complaints process works well and you get to speak with the owner of the store if you feel like the service you received wasn't the greatest. My guess is that the stores wouldn't be too impressed with HN online sending deals such as this their way but different stores respond differently when they can't fulfil an order. Maybe some sort of standardised process from head office could be agreed to?

I hope that HN online received my complaint and took it seriously because I think most of this is their problem - they took my money.

    • Well done. Now someone else can give me some stats on their battery as well as the inconsistent backlight.

      • i installed the battery program, not sure how to take a screen shot but mine is showing the following:
        Designed Capacity 45000 mWh
        Total Capacity 44400 mWh
        Current Capacity 44400 mWh
        Mine is currently fully charged

        • So mine is faulty. That is all I need to know.

        • you are not having much luck with this model, i hope its not a sign of things to come for the rest of us.

  • Im glad you got it finally sorted chiefbodge

  • Got the u940 today and soon after opening my partner almost immediately noticed that the backspace key felt weird - turns out it wasn't even connected to the keyboard and looking underneath the key two of the metal clips that hold the key on - one is snapped off and the other is badly bent.

The laptop came in box with a toshiba seal on it. Cannot believe the quality control of toshiba? :|

Will be interesting to see how HN deals with this one. I am really hoping they arrange to have the laptop picked up and replaced as having a young baby I have pretty much no time to go to the store and pickup another one.

Really hoping this doesn't go to warranty or anything as it could take ages.

    • Before you swap it over can you please check the backlight and also the battery levels?

Batterycare or anything similar is what you need.

  • Happy days. The battery has 45Kwh written on it.

I got harvey norman to swap it over and presto:

    Correct readings!

    https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D418639_78151076_95515

  • Went in and swapped over with new u940 no problems. Owner of the store was really nice. Harvey Norman Citycross came through in the end!

Very happy with the u940. It may be less rrp than the u840 and lower build quality but I reckon the whole build looks more consistant and windows 8 is way better than 7 imho. Sooooo much bloatware on it that you need to uninstall though.

Is this kind of bloatware universal? I think it's disgraceful that manufacturers make money out of crippling their pc's by default.. I thought they'd have more pride in their product. Apple would never do it.

It also makes microsoft/windows look bad as well.

    • Congrats on getting this all sorted. I am really starting to like mine and have only two issues now and both are to do with the backlight.

      • at times the backlight will not come on when out of sleep mode (actually most times)
      • the backlight is not a constant brightness across the keyboard. The first issue negates the second as I don't use it much!

At least the battery is sorted now.

  • Further discussions?
