I am looking for a touch laptop with pen support for teaching, $897 is so tempting, I guess this touch model must be compatible with a touch pen, I am going to test it tomorrow with my asus touch pen to see how it goes!

    • Please let us know how well this works. I'd be likely to use it that way too.

      • Tried asus pen and dell pen, they both won’t work

    • I'll stay away from Acer! Prefer to pay a bit more for Dell, HP, Asus or Lenovo.

  • Was this 997 last week and 1197 for the i7?

    • Yep.

  • Is there a OLED version?

Cant get much better than this for $900

  • Is this good for kids highschool laptop vs MacBook air M1?

    • +1

A bit overkill if anything but yes a good option

Lightweight, should have enough storage and good battery

Ask the kid which operating system they prefer first. My well intentioned but tech illiterate mum got me a Mac for university on Christmas way back in 2015. I was studying computer science… was pretty much useless as a result. Windows is a safe option in that sense

      • +3

I guess it's OT but it surprises me that the Mac wasn't suitable for computer science which is all about algorithms, data structures, functions, hardware. These aren't specific to windows. If the degree had more of a software engineering bent with a focus on developing Windows applications, I get that a Mac wouldn't be ideal.

I prefer to develop on Linux using vscode.

        • Aside from Mac specific code, people code on Mac?

          • @Skinnerr: I do most of my data analytics stuff with python so the os doesn't matter much.

I love the sophistication of Linux and I'd guess that most of not all of that would be available on Mac. I do a bunch on windows to though.

depends on the spec of the M1. I'm assuming base model though, which means 8gb ram and 256gb storage.

      Cons:
      - 8gb ram isnt great especially if they're the type to have many many active browser tabs open.
      - 256gb also isnt great, and is non-upgradeable so you better make sure that's enough storage for the entire device's lifetime.

      Pros:
      - M1 air gets much better battery life.

      Other considerations:
      - M1 air runs macOS and Apple Silicon chips, make sure all apps are compatible if planning to get one

    Any similar 15" bargains?

  • Woah great deal!

My historical experience with Acer laptops has never been great.
One laptop I had never had a single driver update available since laptop release.
Obviously overheating and loud fans issues as well.
The other older one had a Pentium 4 desktop processor in it instead of a laptop processor.

    bought one thanks OP

haven't bought a windows laptop in my entire life so hope it turns out good

  • Ok, cancelled my order for the i5 I haven't picked up yet! Lucky I waited. i7 for the same price nice

    • +1

      Isn't the i7 $100 more?

      • The i5 was 997 last week and 1197 for the i7.

  • Slightly out of topic, is the thunderbold port capable of handle eGPU?

I need to connect 4x separate display (plus the laptop screen) for my mini projection project and planning to have a separate desktop gpu e.g 3080.

As this is project based, i need to keep it mobile hence the laptop (not the PC).

    • How do you connect 4 external displays to this? 2 DP and 1 HDMI only get you 3? Unless you’re docking it?

      • Yeah i just googled and read it after posted question here.. the gpu has 4 ports (dp and hdmi) and the requirements is thunderbolt 3 or 4 (one usb-c). Unless i misunderstood

  • Worth paying extra $100 for i7 version?

    • for $100, I'll go i7. keep in mind we don't buy new computer everyday. Having a little room for future flexibility is where I would go.

    • Yup I did

  • +3

Absolutely DO NOT buy this. Severe and extreme thermal throttling due to power hungry CPU and awful, underspecced thermal design.

You are not getting anywhere near the power of a 13500H or even 13700H.

    • +2

Is there an alternative you'd recommend?

  • Is it good for eGPU?

  • Has this model got an ethernet port? Specs say wired and wireless but cant see the port.

  • OP account deactivated?

    • +1

      Mission accomplished

    • OP was Look Up / ChatGPT, right? I appreciated their laptop posts (their rants about dGPUs were sometimes a bit misguided however iirc)

  • I had this one:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/839550

Great laptop (build, screen etc etc) except for:

    • Corrupted the boot sector somehow when just sitting there on my desk. That was the straw…
    • Fan control was weird. The only way I could control them was put it in silent mode (which reduced the speed). Not a quiet laptop at all.
    • Wifi was dodgy. It took ages to reconnect after sleep.
    • Battery life wasn't near what was advertised.
    • On your lap it was a painful experience. Some sharp edges!

But for $900 this Intel version is a solid laptop.

    • Not sure if it's an AMD related issue, my Intel ultra 5 version seems to be fine (and I can't hear it at all)

  • I got this yesterday in VIC for mum, there are still a few left if anyone is looking.

  • Can get this as a display model - no box at Officeworks for $700. Worth it?

  • Looking for decent laptop for personal use, noticed the quality of this laptop, especially screen was low compared to other laptops. When touching screen the panel actually went inside. Not sure if that was faulty display piece or it comes like that.

    • +1

I noticed the screen was like that as well, seemed cheap not glass I guess. But it's for my daughter for school, so maybe not being glass is a good thing.
