510

Hello OzBargain!

We have a small number (50 pieces) of 2m Optical Cables that slipped through our production line without the outer braid covering, so we have decided to offer these at a never to be repeated (below cost) price of $2.50 each (usually $11.95) which includes FREE delivery Australia wide.

As we only have a limited number of 2m Optical Cables available at this price, we decided to also bring to the table, a 50% discount on our Single Port HDMI Wall Plates (now $5.00 with FREE delivery).

This offer is limited to one 2m Optical Cable per customer and two Single Port HDMI Wall Plates per customer.

Please also note that this offer is limited to 50 pieces of each item. Once this quantity has been sold, the pricing will revert back to the regular sale price.

I assume the plates are only white? Pity, I don't like light coloured things in the theatre room.

      Good morning jdr,

Yes, at the moment we only offer these HDMI Wall Plates in white. We will be looking at expanding our range to also include black in the future.

    • +1

      Could spray paint it?

      • unless you have black walls I dont see a problem as most walls are light coloured also I think the idea is to have it hidden behind the screen ect…
great price on the cable many thanks…..

        • yeah.. white is your stock standard 'colour' for backplates
wouldn't even call it coloured, it's just plain.

        • +2

Actually if you have a good home theater you would have darker colored walls.

"Actually if you have a good home theater you would have darker colored walls."

Darker coloured walls is what I have. I got 5 neggers for that, funny really :)

      Hello Reiji,

Yes, the cable on offer does not have an outer braid which is also the case for the cable in the link you have provided.

Do you mind if I clarify, was this example provided to illustrate price difference?

The example you have provided is located in Hong Kong and is also extremely thin and fragile. The cable on offer here is of a higher quality standard and is located in (and shipped directly from) Australia.

Of course being a digital signal, the term "quality" is subjective to interpretation of the word. However, in this case I am making reference to a substantial difference in build quality. For only a small amount more, I hope that this offer can be well received.

You misunderstood me lol, I just want to know since the image in your one has the outer braid.
So I was wondering if you meant the outer braiding on the connector or the whole cable.

My apologies. I know only too well that when submitting a deal to OzB that it better be good! :) I just thought I would take the opportunity to clarify this just in case this aspect was in question.

To answer your question, yes this is in reference to the outer braid covering which is usually added externally to the cable section (not the plug).

Ordered even though I have no use for it currently :p

  • Hey Space HiFi, great prices :) Any chance you can stock an optical selector? I got one of these off ebay but it sucks: http://www.minidisc.org/part_The_Sound_Professionals_Toslink_optical_selector_(passive).html Was hoping for something similar, and this seems like the kind of product you guys like to stock :)

    • Hello lukyjay,

Unfortunately at the moment we do not offer anything that would be suitable for your requirement.

In our experience we have also found that Optical Switches are prone to issues (loss of signal strength etc.) which is why we have been hesitant to stock this type of product. If we are able to source a quality product in the future, then we may add this to our range.

    • Could you elaborate on why they suck? I was looking at getting one as well, just haven't pulled my thumb out…

      • I have to admit, I have never tried a passive Toslink Optical Selector, but just considering the concept I may be able to explain why they 'suck'.

With fibre optic cables in general, the connector loss is much greater than the loss along the length of the cable (which for these short cables, would be negligible).
Even good connectors have a loss, so these passive selectors are adding an additional 2 connectors just to get in and out of the box. Then being passive, the switch mechanism itself is likely to be another 1 or 2 connectors. Now in a switching process which is purely mechanical, I can't imagine these internal connectors being great (I even questions how well the internal optics would line up).

In other words, these passive selectors are adding a number of losses, and the lasers in your hifi gear can't increase the transmit levels to compensate, which is therefore likely to introduce errors (which for digital signals probably won't sound nice).

      • Well he's right, they do suck. I have a passive one right now but it sucks.

They do however work if you use a really short cable, like maybe a 20cm cable input and 20cm cable output. You can't plugin a 3 meter cable and a 6 meter cable to a passive switch. The switch makes the light a lot less dim, which is why digital ones are better because they repeat rather than pass along, but jesus I'm not spending $200 for one I'd rather just get off my ass and change the plug manually hehe

  • Great price, thank you. Just ordered a 2m optical cable.

  • Recommend these guys, I bought a whole bunch of cables from them a year ago and never had an issue.

  • im seeing it as 11.95. guess its over?

    • Yes, the 50 pieces sold extremely quick and the regular price is applicable once again.

      • Even the regular price is cheap just ordered the tosLink 1.5m. Thanks (and Macarthur based too.. even better)

  • Was about to purchase the Hdmi wall plate but realised that when the Hdmi cable was attached inside the wall, it probably won't fit. Would jump on the right angle Hdmi wall plate

    • Hello cowiie,

Most walls should have enough room for the standard design. Including the connector on the wall plate, the HDMI Cable plug and an allowance for the cable to bend, the total required space would be approximately 70mm to 80mm.

Unfortunately we cannot offer a promotion on our right angle version at the moment.

  • Damm. I Didn't check OZB today and missed the optical cable.

  • Is your cable single mode or multi mode?

    • +1

An Optical (Toslink) Cable features a unique design which utilises a LED light source. Although I don't believe an Optical (Toslink) Cable is referenced in this way, it is essentially a multimode fibre, albeit with a larger core.

Single mode fibre is exclusively used for broadcasting systems and long distance telecommunication networks etc.

      • :) Described perfectly and good that you have added Toshiba Link into your reply.

  • The cable I received doesn't have Nylon braided sleeving. According to the illustration and the description on the cable webpage it should have Nylon braided sleeving. Will it affect the quality of the cable?

    • Good evening ltpgman,

I apologise for any confusion regarding the outer braid. However, this was the very reason for the discount and was explained in the opening paragraph of the deal (and also covered here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101254#comment-1357541).

Taking new images and uploading these just for the short duration of this promotion didn't really seem viable. Instead, I opted for a short and concise description here on OzBargain outlining this detail.

This will not affect performance and instead serves the primary function of enhanced aesthetics.

      • Just to add to the above reply, during the promotion we did indeed include a note in a bold red font within the description area. This was to advise that the reason for the large discount was due to the outer braid not being present.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us (link available three comments above this one).

      • Thanks for your reply. Good to know it will not affect performance.
