  • can u get gps apps to work with this?

    • If you use the Smart Phone connectivity, then what you see on your phone will appear in the 7" display, so if you can get you GPS on your phone to work, then you can get it on the screen of this unit

      • To use the Smart Phone connectivity, your phone needs to support 'MirrorLink' either officially, or by cracking (see PinVidz post below).

iPhones do not support Mirrorlink, but looking at p32 of the manual, it appears if you use the Passanger Control feature (mainly used to output video), you might be able to output some apps to your screen - however control of the app will still need to be via the iPhone.

Awesome price. Paid just a little more back on Boxing Day.

Guys, please have a look over at XDA, one of the guys there has cracked Samsung's Drive Link app, which is required on S3's, Note II's, and also S4's as well, to work with MirrorLink. The Drive Link app prior to being cracked was rubbish, and only allowed very limited functionality. Now you can have just about anything on screen, using common sense, of course.

edit: Xperia Z will also work with this unit, using Sony's "Car" app. Don't have an XZ, so I can't tell you what it's like or what functionality it has.

    • so it'll only work with samsung s3, s4 and note 2??

usually sony's headunits are quite ugly.. but this 1 is alright.. so much screeeen =)

i bought mine boxing day too, and while it originally only supported the s3 and not the note 2 (you had to unofficially install the apk) samsung made it available for it shortly after.

but this guys cracked apk is much better anyway! completely unrestricted

  • How does this compare to the cheaper option also on sale?

    Pioneer AVH-X3500DAB

It's doesn't, the Pioneer is not a MirrorLink head unit, and Pioneer at this stage don't do them. However, their AppRadio 2 (not available here) can mirror with just about any decent Android phone using the ARLiberator app.

  • This is cheaper than their sale on the 601 model at $470. Only thimg is I'd really miss a volume knob getting this one. Hmmm.

EDit wait the 601 is down to $328, decisions decisions.

  • easier or harder to install than a standard deck?

    • Depends on what car you're installing it in.

For us, we have a 50 series Camry Hybrid. Fairly straight forward, used the various Toyota to ISO harnesses and Axxess ASWC steering wheel control interface from installer.com to complete the job. Plus a genuine double-DIN fascia to replace the factory integrated stereo.

      • Wow, it's a far cry from the old days when I had to wire each contact into a random block from Jaycar

  • I installed to a vz commodore with ISO harnesses. Took all of about 1 hour to plug and play

  • most of the people i hear/read from places like justcommodores and other forums as well as store reps. They advise to stay away from sony car audio full stop which for some may be a deal killer.

just after opinions here as otherwise its a great deal on paper

    • I have a relatively cheap Sony mp3 cd deck from about 6-7 years ago, been in 2 cars and seen about 3 years of actual use with no issues. Are they complaining about quality of build, sound or something else?

      • sound Q generaly. But havent spent a lot of time there (JC) recently

and those people are/can be audiophiles/enter competitions with their speakers
        will read up now

  • I think if you do some reading on JC you`ll find its mentioned as been one of the best units on the market for its price. I think Sony lack in there speakers and amps + lower end head units.

  • Picked mine up today. I went for the 601 since it has the knob and exposed drive slot but with a slightly smaller screen.

    • I went for the same one. I prefer to have a physical knob, a front facing usb port; and the ability to remove the front plate when parking in not so great locations.
