    • Haha I am wondering as well!

    • It doesnt have GPS, but i like the idea of the iphone app to upload. Spec wise the D20 is better, but $133 is still a great deal for the Olympus so I'm going to accept it! Although i got 2, so i will also wait for the D20 - it might not appear before my travels!!

      • same issue here :( I'm leaving in 5 weeks for my once in a year trip.. Hopefully it'll come before July 1st :(

    • Bugger using the iPhone to double handle what the camera should do :P

      Dedicated devices FTW !!!

    • Olympus TG-630 has no GPS if that feature matters to you. Similar zoom. Direct-access button for LED torch. About $100 lower retail price if we are using the "gold standard" of camera stores as a pricing guide.
      http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=tg-630&N=0&InitialS…

I like the direct torch button on this unit. Button layout seems more menu-centric. However, you could take them up on the offer. It may (or may not) be a better camera for you.

But this is essentially Dick Smith (also known as "Don't Stock") offering you a camera that most likely makes them more profit just judging from the retail prices.

    • Yep I received the same message….

  • I also just received the email.

It looks as though the rrp is near $300 though waterproof to only 5m with no gps.

swinging towards waiting for the canon though have not seen this in person

  • +2

This might help you guys decide whether if it's worth the wait.

    http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-D20-vs-Olympus-TG-630-iHS

    • Thanks for the link, think I'll wait for the Canon

  • I think the Canon is a better deal, purely in terms of $$$$$. However, they look to be fairly similar, save a few things like GPS and an extra 5 m of 'water proofness'. Also, the Olympus records 1080p at 30fps instead of 24… not a big deal but another difference. If you can wait, I personally think the Canon is the better deal. (And it will have much better resale value if you don't like it and want to sell it)

  • Ended up asking for a refund… will get my money back early next week apparently. Thank you OP nonetheless.

  • i like how you can do the panoramic on the camera with the olympus - and regarding the 5M depth, if you are proper diver then you would probably want a better camera! playing in the sea or a pool, 5M is fine

    • The problem with the 5m rating is that it assumes static pressure. Essentially: the camera is submerged to 5m and does not move.

If you move it under water (i.e. holding it in your hand while snorkelling) you can exceed that pressure rating without going deeper than a couple of meters.

  • This one has in camera charge via usb, so dont have to carry a bulk adapter with me and can charge of a usb power bank

    Battery charging: In-Camera via USB

The Olympus has a similar retail price here in Australia, that's why they offered it as a replacement. But the specs are much lower and in other countries (like the US) that results in a much lower retail price.

Main differences: the Olympus is only 5m waterproof (Canon 10m) and it does not have GPS.

I think the Canon is worth waiting for for anyone who does not need it urgently.

    • One question is whether they will debit the amount for the cameras or they will remain pending and unactioned until the order progresses from Backorder to shipped?

EDIT: I see the amount has been debited. No worries. Now we wait…

Considering everything I am quite impressed by Dick Smith though. Yes, they were surprised by the demand (quite likely some employee is in trouble now for leaving that camera on the website at that price by accident).

But they are willing to cop the losses and are trying to find the best solution for everyone. If you are patient you get the product you ordered at the price that was advertised. If you are in a rush you get an equally discounted similar product. And if neither appeals to you you get your money back. I can't fault them on this occasion.

    • +1

Yes, I'm impressed. This is similar to what happened with the Telstra 4G bundle (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85374). On both occasions, they worked with their supplier to fulfill the online orders, price error or not.

      I spoke too soon.

I will need the camera before 5 weeks are over and I want one that is at least 10m waterproof. So I called to see if we can find a solution. The guy I had on the phone was very friendly and said that the Olympus is the closest in cost price, hence it was offered. But if the specs don't suit me there would be a chance to get a discount on a different model. I asked about the TG-830, but alas, no stock.

After a bit of research I found that they do stock the Nikon AW-110. At a regular price of $448 it is quite a bit more, but hey, perhaps they would do it at half price (like the Canon and the Olympus). So I called again.

The girl I ended up talking to took for ever to get an answer. The special price she offered was a ridiculous $400! "That's basically our cost price" I had no choice but to cancel the order and ask for a refund. They kept me on hold for another 15 minutes. In the meantime I found that the AW-110 costs $375 at the Goodguys, less for cash. What a joke that $400 offer was, downright insulting! And half an hour for the call, almost all spent on hold, what a joke!

      • O yes, that old "cost price" trick!

      • +1

Looks like they are dicking you around

      • +1

At a regular price of $448 it is quite a bit more, but hey, perhaps they would do it at half price (like the Canon and the Olympus).

Just because they have offered a crazy good price on a couple of products doesn't mean they can on ALL products. There are various reasons why special prices can pop up, and obviously it doesn't apply to the Nikon you want.

What a joke that $400 offer was, downright insulting! And half an hour for the call, almost all spent on hold, what a joke!

They didn't have to discount anything, to anyone for any reason, you were asking them for a favour and they took $48 off the price as a goodwill gesture. Seriously, you think you're entitled to half price on every product they sell because they have a good price on ONE product?

"OMGz, there will be a delay on my camera and they offered an alternative, so I expected 50% off everything and they declined, OMG what an insult!!!!!!!!!"

I think the main issue in that post was:
          * lying about cost price
          * sheety service

The pathetic discount (that could easily be beaten 'around the corner') just adds to that, but to me didn't come across as the main problem. Nor was anyone saying they are entitled to half price (that I could tell), but it was merely worth a shot asking.

I have purchase ONE item from Dick Smith online; a hard drive case that shipped on Monday. I'm mildly surprised that:
          1) there was stock.
          2) delivery went smoothly

Especially given the hundreds of times I've checked their website for stock and been disappointed.
It was clearly too much for poor Dick to have this deal go smoothly. But we'll see how it ends up for some people.

    • I am impressed with that DS are doing on this occasion too - but pity they didn't do the same for the $12 triple sets of Panasonic phones they were selling a few weeks ago.

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/102382

Lousy pricks just cancelled those orders and refunded your money - you had no choice….

I am impressed by dicksmith service on this one. I am in no hurry for camera so I'll wait, I think it's worth it.

  • +1

I will wait as well.Got used Canon D 20 at friends place. Good stuff. Worth to wait.
    keep calm)

OfficeWorks have the TG-320 cheaper at $115.

    • +1

Big difference between an obsolete TG-320 and a current model TG-630….

  • +1

I have emailed (replied to my order confirmation email) asking why the order tracking status says "backorder" while the website said in-stock when I placed the order.

No reply in over 24hrs. No offer of the Olympus or advice of any sort regarding how long delivery will take. Without this thread I would not even have checked the order status until I was curious why my camera had not turned up yet.

Some communication would be nice DSE..

  • Think I will wait for the D20

  • ashfield DSE have display model sell for 133.5 , ask them for the box the staff try to find but no good, otherwise i will cancel my order and get the display instead, i m now worry after 5 weeks DSE will claim due to last quantity required, Canon will not able to supplied, and we all screwed

  • For those that have missed this bargain,
Harvey Norman is now offering the same product with an attractive price
    It's $174
I think this is still a pretty good deal

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/canon-powershot-d20-digital-c…

  • anyone got an update, been nearly a month,

    • +3

I called them on Tuesday and was informed that stock is arriving late this week and we should expect delivery early next week.

  • oh no, just received a refund for the exact camera amount ….

    • hmm - any email?

      • just one from paypal, nothing from Dicksmith themselves

        • +1

Status now indicates that the order is "now being processed" instead of "backordered". Has status changed for you?

        • it has actually ….

  • mine too it says "your order is being processed"

  • I thought this recent review of the Canon D20 might be of interest to those waiting forever for Dire Stock to send their items

got an email today that my order is ready for delivery.

    • Me too!

    • +1

funny that I feel like revoking my +ve given the amount of time we've all had to wait for this. It's a borderline -ve deal lol

  • +1

I hope we get it tomorrow. :-)

  • Got this email today.
"Your order has been packed and is awaiting collection. You will receive an email with shipping information this evening which will enable you to track your order."
    Looks like its coming sooooon….:)

  • Just got mine delivered now!!!

    • got mine too!!!

  • +2

dick crap has the worst customer service. Sent an email on 10th June to cancel the order, and no response at all. Tried calling them this morning, have been on hold for 14 minutes and still counting…..

    • +1
They don't answer emails. They are quick to take your money though.

      • +1

They've been going downhill when Woolworths were pumping them up for sale (clearing inventory, store closures, staff redundancies, etc). They have continued on their downhill run since Anchorage Capital Partners bought them last year.

        • +1

they are due for delivery today. called twice yesterday, both on hold for more than 20 minutes!! debating if I should just keep the camera, or refuse the parcel…

        • +1

On principle you should refuse the parcel due to the amount of dicking around.

A true ozbargainer would still keep the camera as he/she has waited so long for a very cheap Canon D20 :D

  • Camera received! :D

  • Got my camera, happy with it. But it has a DC In port above the HDMI port. I'm presuming this is to charge the battery while the battery is in the camera. But there's no power cable! The only power cable that comes with it is for the external battery charger.
Is the other power cord an optional extra or does anyone know what the deal is here? Is it a generic cable? Maybe theres an old canon charging cable lying around that will fit…

    • DC IN port takes the optional power supplies, so the unit can be powered without wasting the battery.

See the Optional Accessories section of the PDF manual.

      • Ah ok, so does the optional accessory power cord just power the camera, or does it charge the battery as well?

        • Just powers the camera. Battery still needs to be recharged in charger.

  • received the camera :)

  • Got my order today!
very happy! brand new! good quality…
ready for a round the world trip.
