  These are a pulse oximeter with the same principle of operation as the finger-clip pulse monitors used medically, or the flash/camera apps for the iphone. You have to hold your finger over the sensor to get a pulse reading, it doesn't monitor continuously. $16 seems a reasonable price for delivery from within Australia, they can be had for as little as six dollars delivered from china on aliexpress et al.

  If you have any interest in knowing your heart rate, don't cheap out and get one of these.

  Get a proper one with a chest strap.

  Even a cheap $30 Aldi one (they come up from time to time) will do better than this.

  You can't hold your finger on the sensor while you're running/riding/whatever, so this sort of thing is really only useful for measuring your HR while you're not doing anything… which is kind of pointless after doing it once or twice out of interest. Get a smartphone app for that instead… it's cheaper.
