In the new BIGW catalogue starting tomorrow, there is a pretty interesting dual core 'netbook' by Pioneer computers Australia, which I do not think has any connection with Pioneer Electronics Australia. It also mentions that if you receive Family Tax Benefit A, then you may be eligible for 50% education tax refund from the Tax Office.

  • As far as I'm aware, the Celeron 530 is Core based, but is not Duo. Single core only. The Celeron's with dual core are the Celeron Dual Core T1x00 line.

    • Well its possible that they have made a mistake, but the manufacturer's website lists Intel Core 2 Duo 1.73GHz Processor T5300 64 bit as a $99 add-on so it may well be dual core. I guess someone will need to check for us. :P

      • Indeed.

Hard to say exactly which it'd be, since the "Intel duo core 1.73GHz" refers to something that just plain doesn't exist (there is no "Intel duo core" line at all).

Anyone want to pop down to a BigW and find out what the CPU is?

  • Nice price, but is "netbook" getting bigger and more expensive?

    • DVD Writer?
    • 12" LCD screen?
    • 160GB hard disk?

Isn't netbook something you use to surf the net and "use the cloud", like the original Eee PC with only 4GB SSD and less than $300 these days?

    • Yeah, this seems more like a budget-mobility notebook, especially being 1.8kg. I think AMD was also trying to chase down this in between segment with Yukon/Athlon Neo.

    • I think you've missed the main point Scotty. The most important question for a netbook is HOW LONG WILL THE BATTERY LAST?

      • Nope. Original Eee PC 701 has 3 cell battery that lasts only 2 hours, but it's a "netbook" because it's cheap, it's light weight and it's powerless doing anything but surfing the web.

    • Turns out there's a Pioneer Dreambook Light :P

40 GB, 1.1 kg, 6 cell battery with 7-8 hours they claim, and only 1.0 or maybe 1.2 GHz chip :P

That might be their version of the netbook. :)

Though the auctioneer is claiming the ORP was $799 … and even on the auctions I saw, the price is already up to $425 or so. At those prices … you could probably get a different netbook with higher specs :)

  • I think the last Lenovo post is better than this deal. As has been said this laptop isn't very small so the netbook name is kinda negated.

  • For this price you can get an Acer or Dell 15.4" widescreen with almost identical specs

    • But you cannot find anything near these specs at 12.1" for the price. It seriously outperforms netbooks for not much more $$$, plus you get a DVD. Battery life would be where a netbook would be better..and of course size.

  • Oh yeah :) Thanks for the post Mnke :) It's been interesting to me, to read about this new brand of notebooks :)

  • So has anyone bought one of these?

Or checked what the CPU actually is?

    • It's an Intel Core Duo 1.73Ghz. Can you read?
