1.Climbing The Key to Master The Classics

There are no shortcuts to becoming a great musician, but there are ways to speed up the learning curve. Guitar players have a variety of areas to work on in their development — alternate picking, ear training, theory, melodic contour, and more.

You can find practice materials that address each of those areas separately, but there are many great classical pieces that address all of them simultaneously. The 42 Kreutzer Etudes for Violin contain many examples of that principle, and many of the Etudes can be adapted to benefit guitarists of all levels and styles.

Dan Green, founder of the popular instructional site Purple Tiger Guitar, has taken the most well-known of the Kreutzer Etudes, #2 (famously quoted in Van Halen’s “Eruption”), and created an instructional book that will enhance your technique and musicality, training your fingers and ears at the same time.

Dan has transcribed and played dozens of classical pieces for 20 years now, and the first volume of the Master the Classics series, "Climbing the K2," provides a wealth of material to add to your repertoire and accelerate your development as a player. All for much less than the price of a single guitar lesson!

Contains:

Complete tab for the Kreutzer #2 in 2 octaves, to maximize fretboard navigation.
Section breakdowns of the piece to help learn more quickly and efficiently.
Playing tips and theory advice to use in your own compositions.
Specially designed exercises to help learn not just the piece itself, but the musical ideas contained within.
Free sound files for all tabs can be downloaded at the Purple Tiger Guitar site.

Rather than dry dissertations on pure theory, all the books in the Master the Classics series are designed to get you playing right away, instead of studying.
Learn how theory, technique, and melodic development all come together, and supercharge your playing with Climbing the K2!Show less

  • General advice: I seriously recommend learning from videos. Find videos of a good teacher teaching your favourite songs. You can replay sections and master songs that turn you on, which keeps you motivated. I started with books teaching me "Home on the range" etc. Made me hate guitar!

    • I think we should refer both. From using only videos we cannot learn everything. I use both. But I suggest we should have a fundamental knowledge of music to learn to play guitar. Sense of various beats(4/4, 3/4, 6/8 ) specially if you need to play rhythm guitar. Later, you can catch up the Strumming Patterns. Initially, it's good to practice cords that are easy to play such as G,Em,Am,C,F,E,Dm,A,D,D7. Find the simple songs with family cords (usually consist with 3 cords) and play the cords while keeping the same rhythm.

      • And a metronome works well too … :)

        Cheers
