2 Months Free from Vodafone When You Port Your Number to Them (Dealer Stores Only)

40

Was just passing the Vodafone Kiosk at Chadstone and saw this sign.

I asked the guy behind the counter and he explained that they are giving two months access fee's free to anyone who brings their number to Vodafone on a plan of $50 or above.

Given Vodafone's coverage has gotten so much better lately and the news that their 4G is coming soon its not t0o bad a deal, although saying that I am sure this post will generate countless vodafail comments, I just thought I would share it for those looking to switch or get a new deal.

I signed up and ported my number from Optus.
The guy at Chadstone said it was only available in SELECT stores not Retail stores. So apparently it's only the franchise stores that are offering this deal.

Saying that, the guy said his store will also give Case and Screen Protector to anyone who signs up in the last few days of this offer as the offer ends on Friday.
(I told him I was going to post it on OzB so maybe mention this post if you go in)

UPDATE: Extended Apparently.. Although the chadstone store has now closed. WTF

Fairly standard ongoing offer from Vodafone. If you look at their online plans many phones come with 2 months free access.

    • Yeah I did see that.
Guess this would suit those wanting a phone today as opposed to waiting 5-10 working days (their website states that's the lead time on online orders)

      • +1

Also, generally you can negotiate better deals over the phone too.

  • +2

I'd rather go with Optus/Virgin (Virgin is usually cheaper + more data than Vodafail anyway) for better reception, or Telstra for best reception.

    • +2

having just switched from Optus I have to disagree to the reception comment.
Never had 3G coverage when I was on optus.. always showed E or 2G So annoying.
so far so good with Vodfaone.. my other half is on Voda so I switched for the free calls and the fact that she always has data signal when I didn't

      • +1

Would have to agree, well at least with the Optus part - They have terrible reception, at least in my experience. I find that 80+% of the time I am on a 2G connection, even in areas where they claim 3G coverage. Even when I get 3G coverage it seems quite slow. Not sure I'd put my trust in Voda but.

        • Optus 3G isn't particularly fast (there are two towers around my place and 1 gives me 2mbps and another 9mbps, sort of jumping around between the 2 so not very stable, I'd rather get just one tower).
but once I get out of the house I get 4G, the speed is usually pretty good (but not super fast as I live in Sydney CBD), the fastest I've seen was ~70mbps in Redfern.

  • Voda users sitting near me don't think the network is any better.

    • It is horrible. I happened to be in Stoneville last week, 38km from Perth's city centre, and had the familiar "no service" message the whole time. I live in the hills 28km from the cbd and it continuously drops out. Having said that, via personal experience I can say their customer service (via the online forums) tries really hard to amend billing difficulties and overcharges etc, but it must be an uphill battle against the legion of dissatisfied customers who are sick of the inexcusable network coverage.

      • Only the online forum is good. Their call centre is a hopeless battle.

  • Dont switch to Vodafone…the network is the worst I have ever been on.

    • Same here. Get 0-1 bars at home, and no data in busy areas despite full signal. Can't wait to leave.

      • I agree i got out of my vodafail contract after logging a case with the TIO, after wasting days with the run around with their techsupport.

I got all 4 bars and no data in sydney CBD!!
and in my home location 1 bar lots of failed calls and no 3G data, even when the network map said i had good 3G coverage. In reality all i got was -70 to -97dbi signal 2 bars if i hop on one foot and do a rain dance 1 bar or none normally

worth doing your homework before signing up

        • You need to sing while you do the raindance. National anthem works best, followed by Waltzing Matilda.

Serously though, my signal is in the triple negative digits. Calls keep breaking up. Got them to upgrade me to a 850MHz compatible phone, still no improvement.

        • lol

they tricked me into that too, :(

talked me into "upgrading" my contract to a samsung s3 but no improvement in reception!!
You could break the contract by logging in a case with the TIO… which is what i had to do.

        • I didn't renew the contract - I told them the phone they gave me wasn't fit for purpose, so they had to give me another one. Took a lot of hassle, but they gave me and my wife a newer and better one.

  • +4

Lulz…I'm almost ready to port my number away from them.

  • +3

Ever since Vodafone had merged with 3 the coverage is horrible.. I moved from Vodafone to Optus and they were a downer as well, good reception in Surfers Paradise and Melbourne but useless in Sydney.

Moved to Telstra on the 12month BYO contracts (have my own iphone 5 anyway) and never looked back! Telstra is awesome and are alot less strict on account security compared to Telstra which saved me so much Hassle. I wanted to do a change of ownership on my optus account from my mums name to my name and it took 5 visits and i still couldnt do it because "their systems are down" Optus is a joke.

  • +1

As I said.. I suspected that this post would generate vodafail comments.
My Mrs is on Voda which is why I switched, she was getting fast data and no call issues when I was struggling to get even 0.001kbs on my optus connection.
Agree that Telstra is the bomb, but for those of us not wanting to pay Telstra prices, I am of the opinion that Voda is much better than Optus recently. Hence why I posted this offer, I was glad to get 2 months for nothing :) and if I have any issues I can walk away I guess as the guy told me they have some 30 day guarantee

  • If you want tel$ra coverage at optus prices then I heard boost and aldi are good options. I like optus myself, telstra is usually better but not always. where I live optus gets full reception and telstra is 1 bar if you're lucky. Vodafail I have no idea, but many people love to bash them so I have avoided them thanks to word of mouth. Perhaps some day I'll give them a chance. Lol also phone settings can play their part, I know when I first got my nexus I had issues, now I can download torrents faster on optus than I can on my homeline.

  • +5

I wouldn't do this for 2 free years of Vodafone. ><

    • +1

i would but they dont offer it anymore! lol

  • Call them to complain abt their network and you get 3 months free anyways :)
Complain abt how high the bill is and you get another 1 month free :)
Voda will do anything to please you coz they know they dont stand a chance in the market!!

    • That is, unless you have one of the older pre-existing Infinite plans.
They're trying everything they can to get me off of that plan.
I've been with them for 14 years now and they will not give me any better deal than that offered to anyone from the general public that wanders in from the street.
VF are very very close to losing me!!!

  • 2 months access itsn't great unless you plan dosn't already of that promo attached to it online.
If you sign up online you can also get a $100 cashback not definite but a chance is better then none, I've always gotton mine.

port my number to the vodafail network? over my dead body.

Have to say i do find it funny its the people who are not on Vodafone who seem so vocal about it.
I am on it now and i have to say i am very impressed, speed test in my home was 15.4mbs
when i was on optus was lucky to get 1mbs on a good day.

Think maybe voda may have improved a lot since everyone here used it.. but ah well.. i only posted it cause i thought it was a pretty sweet deal.

    • I found that voda has gotten worse in my areas.
I think the thing with Voda is that there are black spots where the reception suddenly dies.
Just imagine being on an emergency call…. and your call drops out…. and then you couldn't call back to who ever it was.

Where as Optus or Telstra, they generally at least still have some reception so you don't lose your call.

On the train from Melb CBD to Home on the Lilydale/Belgrave line, I'd lose reception on Vodafone 3 times, once at Richmond, Camberwell, Nunawading, the bars would simply go to 0, always at that spot, I can easily predict it every day.

Chadstone Shopping Centre is a REALLY big blind spot for Vodafone, go get in there, and everything goes out.
Various spots in Box Hill is also a blind spot.

Vodafone however is good if you always hang out close to the CBD which their reception is fine.

Also I know some of my friends didn't have very good data on Optus, however it was their phone not supporting the correct Bands.

Luckily this week is my last week on Voda and switching to Telstra.

      • Well I work in Chadstone S.C and today my signal is on 4 bars and the speed test I just did was 12mbs.
I did notice on Optus that after 11am my signal would become non-existent but I think that's due to the fact that Chaddy uses repeaters to bring the signal from the street inside the centre, essentially meaning no matter what network you are using you all use the "same repeater" so congestion will always be an issue.

I live in Camberwell, near the train station and I got 5 bars last night and my speed test was fantastic.

I think it will all come down to everyones personal choice and experience, I am very happy I switched. ten times better than the coverage experience I was getting on Optus.

        • For some reason, if i go into Myer or David Jones, all the reception disapears…. on my wife's Optus phone it works perfectly.

        • Not quite sure how you're getting 12Mbps!!! That's about what you'd get on a half decent adsl/cable setup at home!
I'm on VF 3G sitting in Clayton and just tested my iPhone 4 to be 0.98 Mbps DL speed using Speedtest!

        • 3g+ is up to 42mbs and i have 3g+ at home

        • Just ran two speed tests in my home
          here are the results

smack talking crack head. Was on Voda and I may as well not have had a fone. String and 2 cans worked better! Peace out.

  • Nooooo don't do it! It's not worth the pain. I'm counting down the days until my contract with Vodafail ends (currently at 92). It's not a bargain if you can't use your phone. Telstra may be more expensive, but they are well worth it.

I've never had any problems with Vodafone in my 5+ years with them, seriously. And their service is great, they gave me free data when they had a problem with their website not allowing me to buy it.

I only kind of wish they rewarded loyal customers with something, do the other carriers reward their long-term customers at all?

  • anyone know the easiest way to check when my contract runs out?

  • Good luck, I just left them with 50% off on early termination charge. In person, it is the worst network I ever had in the past 10 years.

  • day two today… still getting great coverage and I was out and about last night including being in the city loop and was running speed tests left right and centre (due to the comments on this post) and the worst result I got was 6mbs, am very impressed overall

    • +1

I don't think speed is the issue.
Its more just being able to stay connected without getting bounced off the network.

Vodafone can either be good to you or bad to you. Its a gamble sorta like with TPG as a internet company, some areas are utter crap, and some areas are very good and no issues.

My analogy for Vodafone is always TPG, you can get an excellent connection with no issues, however you can also get a crappy connection with disconnection issues all the time and speed issues.

So if you are willing to risk your comfort with a internet company like TPG then you will be fine with Vodafone.

      • Yeah i can see your point, guess i am lucky then cause i have not had a single call drop out and i use my phone endlessly, hence why i liked voda's unlimited plan

    • Can I ask what app and/or site you are using to measure your speeds?
Also, I'm assuming you're talking data dl speeds!

      • more likely speedtest.net i think

        • Yeah, that's what I use too.
Hence why I'm so curious about these speeds!
edit: Although looking back at previous results, I once had a 3.27 on 3G.
(Getting 16-24 at home on the wifi!)

        • My adsl2+ is pretty crap so sometimes when I'm at home I can't even be bothered turning on WiFi, l normally get around ~9 at home on 3G anyway
