One Direction 8GB USB $3.33 Officeworks (Possibly Nationwide)

130

Surely this is a Bargain!
One Direction 8GB USB!
Officeworks QV Melbourne

MOD: Copied from a duplicated post by @meatgasm

I saw these at office works at Alexandria this evening. Sure, they're One Direction branded, but its a pretty decent capacity for the price that you're paying. The unit is packaged in some frustration packing, but that's no match for my trusty kiwi knife.

The flash drive itself is in a red rubber encasing, and the cap is actually made of metal. Unfortunately, the USB drive doesnt 'click' in place, it relies on friction to keep it in place .

I loaded it to my PC and did a rudimentary speed test, and the results were … well, you get what you pay for. Average read rate was around 17MB/s, while write speed was a less impressive 3.8MB/s.

Now, im sure most of us know that sinking feeling when you drop your precious gadget into a drawer full of knives, that happens to be sitting ontop of a violently shaking washing machine. Wouldnt want our precious little thing getting scruffed, now would we?

I come bearing mixed news in that regard, I carried out a basic scratch test, and although the metal cover help marvellously against the knife, I have to say, that it will scuff and get tarnished in the long run.

For those of you who are looking for a cheap little thing to shove your files, you could do far worse than this device. If you value your favourite pop sensations branding and aesthetics on your tech, I would advise keeping this device away from your favourite Kiwi Knives.

Which direction is it? Can I only write data to it, or only read data from it? Either way it seems pretty useless.

Sure. But can I put a 5gb file on 2x4gb usb?

The price is half the number of the beast. This scares me as do their haircuts.

    • +2

So buy two and you get the full devil.

i came in to see the 1D jokes

  • Is the One direction because you can only put data IN? as it corrupts and can't be read out?

Look, this is actually a good deal for people who need more room than the Harvey Norman stick.
The offending cover pulls right off easily. Then you're left with a generic USB stick with no cap.

If the lack of cap annoys me, I'll could pick up a cheap can of hobby or spray paint and try painting over the caps.

I wrote a 600MB file to the stick in about a minute or so, and copied it back to my computer in what seemed like about 10 seconds. Probably less.

My Officeworks has tons of them by the registers. They can't wait to get rid of them.

I picked up six and now that I see how easy it is to take the cap off, I may get a few more.

I gave this deal a thumbs up.

    • you should get a 500gb HD for $19.99 or $29.99 from POST

what makes this usb so beautiful?

  • Heaps of these at Officeworks Prospect. Bought a few today. Will get a can of white spraypaint to paint over the caps I reckon.

    • Yeah, go out and buy a can of spraypaint to paint your $2 stick. Real economical.

  • HDTune says ~16mb/sec, I got just under 5mb/sec write speed copying a file in windows.

    Controller Vendor: ChipsBank
    Controller Part-Number: CBM2098B - [2012-04-01]
Flash ID code: A5965A69 - 4CE/Single Channel [TLC]

    • a failure just like the group

  • I can confirm that mineral turps completely removes the picture from the USB drive! I couldn't easily remove the writing on the back, tried turps, metho, kerosine. I don't have any paint thinner or acetone handy unfortunately, but they might do the job.

Thankfully a few coats of dark red permanent marker renders the text unreadable. I might spray some clear varnish or a bit of the wife's clear nail polish on it just to make sure the ink doesn't slowly fade to reveal the horror beneath.

Make sure you remove the cover before using turps, otherwise you'll probably destroy the USB drive. Spread the arms a little and the orange USB drive pops out very easily.
