  • I've never heard of this brand of laptops. Has anyone tried these out? Does it have adequate cooling?

    • +4

Horize (real name: Clevo) has a very large following on WP. It's not known as a mainstream brand mainly because it's a whitebox (custom barebones) laptop, and the fact that there are only 2 significant sellers in Australia that deal with Clevo laptops (LogicalBlueOne, and Affordable Laptops).

      • Thanks! I'm seriously considering getting one now.

A few questions that I'm hoping someone here could help me out with:

Is it worth upgrading from the nVidia Geforce GTX670MX 3.0GB GDDR5 to the nVidia GTX765M 2.0GB for an extra $149?

How many HDD slots does this have? Would I be able to install an SSD?

        • +1

There are 2x mSATA Slots for mSATA based SSD
1x Hard disk slot up to 9.5mm
Then you can also convert the optical bay to another hard disk using the conversion kit which takes up to 12mm drives.

As for the GPU, I think for the relatively small difference in price ($149) it is probably worth it. IMHO.

      • Don't forget MLN

    • Do a google search.

Gamers love these laptops. For the serious gamer who want a custom laptop, it's usually a toss up between Horize and Metabox.

    • We have been selling these for a long while now. Around 4 years or so. Cooling? Yup excellent, about as good as you can get in a notebook considering this is 15.6" and with that level of graphics power. They run an individual heatsink and fan for the processor and graphics card. Here is an internal photo of the older model but it is basically the same on this newer one. Here is an internal image from a P150EM which has the same heatsink and fan setup: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Meaks/BuildA.jpg

      • How noisy is the cooling system.

My HP notebook sounds like it has a jet engine inside.

        • +1

When running non GPU related tasks it is virtually dead quiet. Running a game or something like this will spin up both the CPU and GPU fans. I have heard those old HP DV6 and the like and they are incredibly loud, this is nothing close to that. You can comfortably game on this with no problem, headphones recommended still though!

        • thanks, jackkel!

    • And Clevo is a 30 year old public company in Taiwan specialised in notebook OEM.

    • +1

Clevo's are the best performance laptops around imo

      • Indeed they are buddy! I just got a W370ET and I am impressed by the build quality, flexibility in customisation and generally… not getting ripped off by a brand name!

  • Recommended upgrade: SSD Drive?

    • IMO, that is the only thing you need to add to the laptop mentioned in the deal.

  • +2

So very very tempting… but i've waited almost 6 months, I'll wait a bit more on the new 13" W230ST's when they are released… please be soon.. pretttty pleaseeee.

  • +4

Good deal for sure. Do you have any other upcoming specials on Haswell laptops? I'm after an ultrabook style

  • Edit: double posted

  • +1

    "GTX760M Shows approximately 14% faster than GTX670MX card on 3D Mark 11"

They are about the same if you look at 3dmark 11 GPU score alone with 670mx outgunning 760m in some instances…

3587 (670mx) vs 3302 (760m)…but with that said, 760m might see performance boost with future drivers…

Edit: saw the upgrade option is actually 765m…so yes…765m is better than 670mx…Typo from OP in the description…

  • Are there any network options that support 802.11AC?

    • Sorry this is not an option at this point in time.

    • I'm pretty sure you could always get an 802.11AC mini-pcie card in the future. It would just be a matter of taking of the base cover which is probably 1-8 screws and then just swapping out the cards and drivers. If that doesn't suit you just buy a USB network adapter.

  • I've been using a Metabox packaged Clevo for the last 6 months and I love it. Recommend getting at last a primary SSD. The screen and sound quality are both great for my needs. Heat seems fine - I've done long gaming sessions with no heat related restarts, which were common with my old system. Lots of hot air piped out the back of the system, but that's fine. The one quirk is a massive powerpack - not sure if it applies to this model. Battery lasts for about 2.5 hours on light-ish usage.

    • If you have an older model Clevo P151EM1 this has a much larger power supply. The newer revision P151EM1 and this model P151SM1 use a slimline power supply which is around half the thickness of the older type.

  • What is the battery like? Can you get a least 2-1/2 hours of gaming out of it?

    • -2

      Answer: 2 comments above yours!!!

      • +3

So you'll get about 2.5 hours playing minesweeper :)

    • I have had this model a couple of weeks with the older sandy bridge processor. Seems that if you inplug from the powerpack it reverts back to using the Intel graphics for gaming, even though settings are forced to the nvidia prcessor.

    • I've never run games on battery power, but I suspect the battery life would be very low - the 2.5 hours I quoted is using a browser with the screen dimmed! It's a beast of a GFX card!

    • +1

trying to play on battery. you're going to have a bad time

  • +1

Sorry off-topic a bit but since we have Jack from LBO here:

Jack, when are you expecting the W230ST? Like when do you think you will be shipping them out and when can we start pre-ordering them?

Also, what's the estimated price point for that model?

    Thank you.

    • +2

      Hi,

I don't have pricing information on that model yet but the ETA is late July. I would estimate the W230ST (13.3" model for those wondering) to be able to be ordered around this time in July.

      • +1

        Thank you very much!

I'm sure it will be pricier than most but hopefully nothing ridiculous.

Also, any word on whether it will have mSATA? Feels like not enough space to put an SSD into a 2.5" slot but mechanical drives are such a huge bottleneck.

        • Sorry do not know this yet, let's keep our fingers crossed.

      • +1

Awesome news. So long as pricing is reasonable and within the average of pricing everywhere else, I will be ordering one the minute they are available :)

  • I'd so buy this if it had backlit keys. Hopefully you can do a similar deal on the new P150 when it's available? I'd buy it in a sec.

    • +14

The Brand is not "unknown" if you know what you are buying.

    • +6

      These are "computer people's" laptops.
OS is $99 actually, not going to go into the Linux options, and for a gaming laptop 3kg is fine. Do you even lift?

      • why not get Windows SBS 2011? It's basically Windows 7 with some extras.

    • The power supply, for the bigger brother, alone was around 2Kg :-)
Is it too heavy? Then you're to weak !

    • I'd never heard of Abercrombie and Fitch till all that stuff on the radio. Must have been an unknown brand =.

You need to learn that if you personally haven't heard of something, it isn't necessarily an unknown brand.

I've bought two of these for friends, and set them up to working conditions. Great quality.

  • Ive been trying to decide if I should get a gaming laptop or build a budget mini itx gaming desktop to take with me when I work away ( FIFO ). What do you guys think about gaming on a 15.6" screen? At the moment I'm probably going to desktop mainly because I'm not sure if Id enjoy gaming on a laptop, however this is a really
    good deal!! decisionssssss

    • This will set you back 1300$ with an OS. Desktop probably would be 500$ cheaper is you do a bit of research.

      • lol i know how much itll cost, im not worries about that. its mainly the playing on laptop vs monitor thing.

        • +3

Get the laptop for taking away and have an external monitor at home.

      • +2

You cannot salary sacrifice a Desktop

  • I have a 170HM, bought 2 years ago. i did the mistake of not buyng from this shop.
Do this come with the LG panel? If Yes, and the quality is the same as 2 years ago, to change the panel in not an option, BUT A MUST !
I recomment also to replace the optical drive with a secodn drive and have a SDD as your primary drive.
Price for an upgrade to 780M or 680M(X)? The 670 comes in at position 15 on the top Nvidia Cards.

    • Yes the optional AUO 90 and 95% panels are nothing to be missed. They are absolutely amazing quality. Unfortunately this guy doesn't take the 780m or 680m out of the box so to speak. It is possible but it requires a power supply upgrade to a 180w one, all in all it would probably be cheaper to just get a model capable of the 680m as standard.

      • That's the one I installed. Rather easy to do myself, but I guess that voids the warranty. Not that I needed one. Running smoothly since 2 years (Except for the HD failure I had).

  • hi can someone comment on this deal? http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/545-horize-jw6-ultrab…
    Horize JW6 Quanta Ultrabook.
    thanks

  • Do you guys take Paypal?

    • +4

Yes and we charge NO fees! That is our policy.

  • Do you do the 17" at all?

  • +1

Few questions for the OP and others please ^ ^ I have a few people interested if its the right product :D

    1. Howlong is this special going to last? (OP)
    2. Can I get a discount if I dont want the dvd drive? (OP)
    3. How does your warranty work if for a 3 year period?(OP) - Like who pays for delivery to the fix center and what inclusions or exclusions are calculated.Do you have likea pdf file I can read over please? (I have not delt with an online buying company before and have concerns)
    4. The SSD upgrade seems a tad expensive, is this reasonable price?(OP/OZBer's)
    5. Would downgrading the 16gig ram to 8 gig ram make much diff?(OP/OZBer's)
    6. Is there a diff betwen SSD instead of both HDD and a SSD if you factor in that having a lot of space doesnt matter?(OP/OZBer's)
    7. What is/does a mSATA Drive do? is it worth getting? (OP/OZBer's)
    8. Worth it or wait a tad longer for a better deal?
    9. HOw is this brand? any bad , great reviews?

Sounds good to me to be honest and its hard to find a physical retailer that would sell all of these things in the one machine.

    Thanks for reading :)

    • +3
      1. At this stage it is only until Tuesday 18th or while stocks last.
      2. Sorry cannot.
      3. Sure you can do return to base or pickup and return depending on which you select. RTB you can view the terms here: http://www.horize.com/index.php/warranty/
      4. All parts are we cover the warranty even if the manufacturer doesn't. So it has to be.
      5. IMO not really.
      6. Sorry, can you clarify this?
      7. It is a micro version of a normal size SSD. These run 6gb/s ports so you can take advantage of a very fast SSD but not take up a valuable hard disk bay.
        1. I know SSD is faster but If comparing A with B , A= having one ssd and b= having one ssd and one hdd is there any difference in speed or quality of the machine as a whole.

I dont mind if the laptop only has like 128gig , i just want to know if having both SSD+HDD in it will make the machine run smoother ><" hope u understand

        • +1

no difference in speed as far as i know. If the operating system is on the SSD and the HDD is just used for extra storage as required, then there will be no performance or reliability benefit whether the HDD is present or not. To the best of my knowledge.

    • +1

      8) If I would not already have a machine capable of playing in decent mode the latest games I would jump at this offer.
      4) SSD upgrade should not be more then $50 more then a new SSD Hard Drive
      9) Brand is good. You need to upgrade the screen, as LG panel are crappy (miserable angles). Mind you, not an ultralight.
…reading my answer to 8) … anyone in need of a Laptop ?

      • how to upgrade the screen? is it LG panel? howmuch would it cost ~~~

u said something about the $50 ssd

on the site they selling it for like $189 ~ Crucial M4 128GB SSD 550/175 Mbs Read/Write - did u mean its to over priced?

  • the barebones/whitebox laptops tend not to be filled with the useless, bloated, slow start up causing and c drive filling software of better known brands, yet may have similar or better component quality (Mboard, psu).

  • Dear jackkel,
can you also comment on this deal? http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/545-horize-jw6-ultrab…
    Horize JW6 Quanta Ultrabook.

how is Horize JW6 Quanta Ultrabook compared to Horize P151SM1B i7-4700MQ
the price is 699$ as compared to 1099. Is 400$ diff worth the extra upgrade? or is 400$ diff worth the downgrade if i want a smaller cooling laptop to bring around?

Base on the specs, which would be a better deal?
Thanks. I am really interested in getting a good laptop, but my previous ones all have problem with battery life and heating up problem.
    thanks^^

    • The JW6 is an all-round good laptop. It has a much lower resolution though, and isn't running Haswell. I would've bought it already if its resolution was just a little higher.

  • Hi Jack, any updates on the release of C22T tablet?

  • Damn, not sure if I should take this or wait for a 13-14inch model. I'd love a smaller screen and better battery life with basically the same specs (sans a discrete card, since haswell performs alright for most low-level games).

Is it worth waiting for or not? This is such a good deal.

  • I so wish there was a backlit keyboard upgrade for this.

    Edit
So with both this and the 150EM spec'd up with 95% gamut, Intel WiFI+Bt v4, and adding the mSata 128GB to this, am I right in suggesting the only difference is the 150EM has backlit keyboard and a 3630QM, so I'd be swapping processors and $11 for a lit keyboard. Judging by CPU benches, not much in it either. Oh the pain of the procrastinator.

    • so ur saying its almost the same… then why wouldnt u get the backlit one? and what does 95% gamut mean? i might upgrade it too :D

      • From the reviews I have read and the youtube I have looked at, it is the premium matt screen. They look freakin amazing. Well worth the $70 IMHO.

added Just found this on Whirlpool
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1652071 Looking at Jacks pictures now

        • yer think ill do it but why the ssd price is so high …looks like an error to me
          ~

  • Mr Jackkel howcome the price of the 128 gig ssd costs so much? ( add $189) with speeds of 550/175 Mbs) the other computers i think only cost $139 to get one when changing. and the other option for mSATA Drive is only $169….. with higher speeds

I think im keen to buy this laptop with some upgrades but i would hate to not buy a ssd from you and look elsewhere XD

    • +1

Mr Jackkel howcome the price of the 128 gig ssd costs so much?

That's how they make profit! Just buy one yourself, DIY MSATA upgrades should be relatively easy to perform anyway.

    • We add on our warranty to the price of all options as we are a system builder not a parts seller! It is completely different when it comes to having to be in standard with fair trading and Australian Laws. Inevitably we can't make it any cheaper.

  • hmm so howmuch would a 128 gig ssd cost o.O? $120? and do they come in various sizes?

    • Because this laptop has only 1 bay for a regular 2.5" drive, you cannot use a 2.5" SSD along side a 2.5" HDD.

Usually, MSATA drives are more expensive than ordinary sized 2.5 inch drives. The price premium is because of supply and demand.

MSY sells the Plextor M5M for $129 so it's not terribly expensive over a 128GB 2.5" (which is around the $110 mark)

  • Hi Jackkel, may I ask when you will have the same config as this special but with a backlit keyboard? I am not in a hurry to get one and would rather wait. Cheers, R3b3l66

    • In a few weeks we will have the same model available with backlit keyboard, however it is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than this model. We won't be having it on promotion the same like this. We have the older model P150EM on promotion at a great price right now.

      • OK. Thanks mate. It is simply that I do a lot of work sitting on the lounge whilst the kids are watching TV and so it is more of a convenience thing. :-(

May I just ask, given that most of my work is video editing and photography, is it worth getting the new CPU or is there no difference in terms of processing ability for video and photos?

  • What would the gaming performance be like attached to a 1440p screen? Or would I be better off waiting for a decent priced GTX780m laptop.

  • Ive got the P151EM1B from the last promotion and im having a lot of fan noise problems with it…not sure if this will have the same problems since its the successor model. I asked around and some guy said clevo notebooks are known for having fan profile issues, not sure if thats true though…

  • so about $1400 after eSATA SSD and OS. Pretty good bargin imo. Only downer is no IPS screen option.

  • It says NO OS which is fine but I have tried to find W7 64 bit drivers with no luck can anyone help ??

    • Don't they send the driver disks with the product?

  • So I've been trying to buy one for a couple of days now and I keep getting a price of $1199, I had this problem last time I went to buy a laptop from your site, am I just cursed or has the deal ended?

    • Same here. Ive been holding off because the price is different to here. If its a mistake could you please extend the deal so we can get one?

Also, im heading off overseas at the end of July. Assuming its made in 15 days, will the invoice show the date its paid for or the date it was sent for delivery?

      • Hi,

Invoices are generated on the date of receipt of payment. If PayPal or Credit Card that will be instant. For Bank Transfer it is on the date we receive it cleared in the account.

        • Damn! Thanks for the info.

I may just have to suck it up and order before the 30 days before I fly. Thanks for the extension!

In terms of stock, how much is left?

        • +1

its updated to 60 days now.

It is! Thanks for letting me know

    • Maybe cursed, maybe not. We have extended the promotion now though so you can get it while stocks last at $1099.

  • I'd like to know if can still get this for $1099 too?

    • We have been given approval to extend the sale so it should be updated now.

  • They did say it might end on Tuesday..So i bought mine yesterday so im quite happy with the decision as I researched a lot and this company seemed to have great customer service. The deal seemed perfect for what I needed and at the right time :) I will update how the rest of it goes but delivery and assembling takes 15 working days ~_~ downside but worth the wait im sure.

    • +2

      Too right.
I'm really hoping that 15 working days is a worst case scenario and I get mine a lot sooner.
      Fingers crossed…
And my F5 button is almost worn out :P

      • +1

the rep told me its 14-15 days most likly when i called

        • Damn :(
Thanks for posting, I don't want to hassle them with an email and delay them from building our laptops.

        • Mine arrived today, can't wait to get home, install my SSD and get this up and running :D

        • So far so bad.
I didn't get a driver disc with the notebook.
I'm downloading the drivers from the Clevo website and they're downloading at 6KB/s.

Unfortunately for me, the LAN driver in Windows 7 doesn't work with this laptop and the driver I downloaded from Clevo doesn't work either.
So to get it connected to my network I have to wait for the 300MB WLAN/Bluetooth driver to finish downloading (which is apparently going to take another 11hours 53minutes).

As I can't connect to my wired or wireless network I'm having to use another computer to download the files and transfer via USB.
I hope I can get this LAN situation sorted, but it won't really be an issue once WLAN is working.

Anyone still waiting on their laptop should start downloading drivers now.

          Edit:
Ok maybe it's the 35MB WLAN combo file, hopefully that works for the WLAN, BT and LAN.

        • +1

I downloaded all the drivers overnight and installed what I could this morning.
In my communication with LogicalBlueOne it seems there are issues with Windows 7 and the drivers that Clevo supply.

I can't install the LAN or WLAN drivers, and USB3 is not working after installing the chipset drivers (which appeared to install perfectly).

After some digging today, I've found that this model is also sold as the Sager NP8230 and on the Sager website they have Windows 7 drivers as well as Windows 8.
Their servers seem a lot faster to download from as well.

I'll try their Win7 drivers when I get home and update.

…no idea if anyone is actually reading this, lol.
