everything looks good but the graphics card…such a shame to have that FHD screen with a rubbish GPU

    • +2

not that I disagree with you but if I was going to spend my money and build a laptop it would probably be like this. I would put a low end graphics card into the computer but I wouldn't plan on gaming on it, that's what my desktop is for.

      • with the expresscard slot you can run a desktop GPU on this laptop as an eGPU setup, and output graphics to external monitor (or feedback into the internal laptop LCD if you have an Nvidia card).

  • Deal is still on the website but it'll probably be gone tomorrow morning:

Price has dropped another $60 to $719

    12.7" SATA tray load DVD+/-RW

    Wow, a 12.7 inch DVD!

    • +2

      Laserdisc?

    • SSD upgrade I'm hearing!

I bought this during the xmas sale, great deal at the time. upgradable to 16gb ram and has expresscard slot for running eGPU setup.

I would wait for price drop further since the new Haswell chips are now entering market.

There is also possible option of back-lit keyboard, but I had to call in to get it changed, no extra charge (but had to wait extra week)

For those not needing optical, you can get a super cheap generic ODD caddy (Ebay ~$10) for the option of running two drives on this laptop. The 32G mSata SSD can be configured as a HDD cache or standalone SSD drive. I personally have my own 120G SSD + 750G HDD (on the ODD caddy) + 32G mSata caching.

SpeedFan (4.49) also works, but can only drive the built-in fan as off/medium/max, and no RPM detection.

  • Is this laptop customisable in terms of ram and Sata drive?

    • Do u read the comment just above urs?

      • Benberg asked if they could be customised at the POS, not if they were upgradable after sale.

Nice find… These don't have a numeric keypad though, do they? Could be a deal breaker for some.

    • I purchased a Vostro 3500 almost exactly 3 years ago from another eofy deal here.

Looks like they no longer have the numpad in the middle of the keyboard which was on the old versions of this laptop.
But you can buy an external usb one from ebay for $5-10.

My laptop is still working fine. The only thing that has failed is that it over heats but that was fixed by removing the back panel and adding a laptop cooler.

  • Thanks OP, ex wife asked me to look for a good deal…I have an HP Ultrabook but think I might be jealous when this one arrives!

I own this laptop, bought it dec 2012 with the price of 779.

The sounds a bit crap. But the display is awesome!

      • How noisy is the fan? A few reviews talk about a loud fan noise even when not loaded, but it looks like Dell has used the same model number for a while so I'm not sure if that applies to this?

(My current laptop is a ~5 yr old HP that's insanely noisy)

        • +1

at full blast the 3560 can be loud, but as I mentioned it can be controlled by speedfan, so it runs silent (fan off) for me when browsing/office work. My fans only spin up during gaming and raw processing in lightroom, and only when the CPU temps go above 75c (tMax for i7 is around 95c before automatic throttling).

speakers are fine, on par with what you can expect from plain laptop speakers. The volume and dynamic range is a bit better than the ipad/ipad mini (only other thing I have to compare with).

  • Great deal but this made me lol:

Umm yeah, I think they're asking a bit much, since these are often $36.95

This is a screaming bargain. $719 for a pretty good laptop with FHD screen. Rubbish with so called 1366x768 'HD' screens sells for this price.

Once you go FHD you never go back. The display is so much sharper, clearer, more detailed. Not to mention fitting so much more on screen at once.

    • couldn't agree more. Time to stop using low-res panels in laptops. Hi end phones are now FHD on 4.7" screens.

  • Comparing it to the Dell 15R SE with FHD as well. Thoughts?

    • 17R SE has a good deal right now. Better graphics and speakers than the vostro. http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/fs

      • 15R SE is $769 new at Dell at the moment. $50 extra but a heavier bulkier laptop with better graphics and speakers. Probably worth it?

        • 15RE 1Tb 5400rpm drive
          Vostro 500Gb 7200rpm + 32Gb SSD

          Tough ask!

        • 1366*768 only…oops

  • If you ring up to place the order you can add backlit keyboard for $16.50.

    • +1

Or do it online with live web help and there is no extra charge.

  • guys i am not entirely sure but if we go through qwibble we may get a 8% cashback making this the best deal ever.

Think i will get this and sell my Toshiba P840/00H 14" touch screen I5. 1 gig hdd .8 gig ram .NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M 2GB. Little use as i dont like windows 8.Only 6 months old and been sitting on the shelf most of that time..

    • +1

windows 8 is fantastic, I run it in desktop mode. the win8 optimizations are great, lets me cold boot to desktop in about 8 seconds with the Dell 3560.

  • Is the 32GB mSata drive separate from the HD (not a all-in-one unit)?

ie can you replace the HD while keeping the mSata?

And can it fit 9.5mm high HDs?

    What's the battery life like?

    • 32G ssd is mSata, separate from the HDD (plain sata). the mSata is removable but difficult to extract deep in the chasis. Ram, HDD, and ODD are easily swapped out.

the 48wh battery lasts me about 2.5h, this is more of a desktop replacement than an ultramobile laptop. I dunno about 9.5mm HDs… maybe it can fit if you use an ODD caddy?

  • guys, how do you get the backlight keyboard for free? I tried live chat and phone, no luck.

    • Got offered it over live chat and today when I tried to get them to honour it they said it was a closing technique and is not valid anymore. I have the offer in writing. Decided to skip this Dell now due to that attitude.

  • Thanks for the post! Got one over the weekend :)

  • Went with the 15R SE in the end. Wanted Blu-ray and the better graphics card. Both had 32Gb SSD.

    $695 refurbed.

  • Expired.
