What was the EA Online Pass?
Online Pass was a unique, one-time-use code included with new EA games that allowed EA players to access online features. If the game was not purchased new, the online pass code might have been used already and the player would need to purchase a new Online Pass.

Do I still need an Online Pass to play multiplayer games online?
For new EA titles, Online Pass will no longer be needed or included. Additionally, we are in the process of eliminating Online Pass requirements from existing EA games. This process will take several weeks. For some games, the prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear; for others, you will still need to download and install an Online Pass, but they will be available free of charge from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace or PlayStation Store.

When will specific games have their Online Pass turned off?
The latest releases of EA SPORTS games are the first. Over the next several weeks, Online Pass will either be removed completely, or will be available for free in the PlayStation Store and Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

My thoughts: 1 - This is a bargain. 2 - EA are $$$ grabbing dogs

  • Not a bargain, but good to know. Funny that The Last of Us came out today and has a online pass, seems like Sony is still doing it for at least a little bit longer.

    • they will until PS4 is out and you will need PS+ to access online multiplayer.

It could be viewed as a bargain considering you don't need to buy a new online pass, but it's more useful as a PSA.

Although it took severe backlash, glad EA are learning from their mistakes.

    • I believe they are backing down as they can now take some extra revenue from the used sales system employed by Microsoft.

      • Yeah, dont give them too much credit, I'm pretty sure they only removed it because they knew of Microsofts DRM plans. I'm thinking Sony prob had some too but scrapped them.

  • This is great news. Thanks easternculture!

  • Enjoy it before they take all the servers down.

Not trying to sound like a dick (but clearly I do) but isn’t this old news?
And yes not really a bargain, but good info for those that didn’t know.

    • +9

nah man its cool, your not being a dick.

  • Where's FIFA?

  • +1

It's not worthing listing the Skate Share Pack. EA removed the ability to upload videos, which makes this DLC redundant.

  • I don't get this deal. so you have to own the game and get EA online pass to play online. this aren't freebies for those games right?

    • +2

If you bought any of the games above second hand, rented or loaned a game, you had to pay a fee to play multiplayer online, which is now being waived for the current generation games

  • Not a bargain in my opinion but good to know if you own those games in second hand form. Stupid EA…

  • Hmmm… I checked the Playstation Store and it still has the online pass for Battlefield 3.

EDIT: Oh, I see it now. You need to use the Playstation Store not through Battlefield 3.

  • nvm.

  • Fight Night Champion is also included! Thanks OP! Online boxing, here we go!

  • +1

For Xbox360, do you need both Online Pass and Xbox Live Gold to play multiplayer?

    • Yes, Xbox live gold is required to play online at all times.

  • +2

    Link doesn't seem to work.

People should look in the description as well, the online pass is being phased out for these games. So if you don't have the game now, there is no point getting the online pass because if/when you get the game in the future it will no longer require the online pass.

Also (not related) PS+ subscribers get an additional 3 games this month to coincide with E3:

    • Uncharted 3 (single player, multi-player is already free2play)
    • Little Big Planet Karting
    • Xcom: Enemy Unknown

    SEN Instant Games Collection

    • +1

Keeping unrelated, those are not additional, they are replacements

      Leaving PS Plus in June:
      12th June: LittleBigPlanet 2
      12th June: inFamous 2
      12th June: Motorstorm Apocalypse

      Entering PS Plus in June:
12th June: Uncharted 3 Drake’s Deception (Single Player)
      12th June: LittleBigPlanet Karting
      12th June: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

      • I believe they are additional in the sense that rather than 3 free PS3 games this month we get 6?

      • Yeah XBLG finally get some free games, Fable 3 now, Halo 3 and AC3 first of next month?

  • link doesn't work?

  • it's not working for any of the psn store ones

  • Any call of duty freebies?

  • I think they figured out that nobody was playing their games online

    • +1

I don't know about anybody else, but I boycott any console game that requires me to make an account with whatever service they've introduced (uplay/EA etc). I log onto the Playstation Network isn't that enough? If I wanted double login systems I would stick with PC/GFWL/Steam/Origin/uPlay etc. and even then I try and boycott them there as well.

Not to mention EA will just discontinue online game services with no notice (Army of TWO: The 40th Day for example).

      • They do give notice, usually several months, but sometimes it is not the easiest info to find.

        Here are their current warnings:

        September 2, 2013 — Online Services Shutdown
        Madden NFL Social for Facebook
Madden NFL Social for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

        August 15, 2013 — Online Services Shutdown
        Trade Nations for Facebook

        June 14, 2013 — Online Services Shutdown
        Pet Society for Facebook
        SimCity Social for Facebook
        The Sims Social for Facebook

        June 6, 2013 — Online Services Shutdown
Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online for Web
Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 for PC

  • What I don't understand is how do you guys find time for online games ? I need to learn that.

I had one game on my android tablet and got so addicted and it sucked up so much of my time that I had to promise the mrs to never play it again.

After 12 hours of work + Ozbargain there is no time left for gaming. Only games I play are the late night kind;-)

PS+ is only 69 a year. Totally worth it!

  • Wow, that's amazing.

  • Can someone help me find the link to get the Battlefield 3 Online Pass for the Xbox Live Marketplace, I tried searching but I couldn't find it?

  • I think this really only benefits people who bought the games second hand and didn't get the online pass. For everyone else who either bought it new or paid a premium to get the pass/etc, this is more of a slap in the face. But hey, it's a step in the right direction.

  • Just so people know I read an artical about a month ago where EA said they were only making (from memory) $5.4 million a year in revenue from the passes that needed to be purchased separately to the original game, to them it was not enough revenue to justify the amount of consumers it deterred from perchasing the product to begin with, or just the people out there who thought negitivly of EA for doing so.

But as mentioned earlier in this by another user, alot probably really has to do with the way the new XBO works and low piracy risk of new consoles. But I think alot of the above is true, because there xbox 360 is basically marketed to still be used with the XBO and PS4 does not have the same protocols, either way it's a win for us consumers, who are already paying for the game, new or used…
