  • My brother has one

Played with it the other day. If your used to the smooth screen swiping on high end tablets or phones, then you'll be disappointed. Its a bit laggy too. Not sure if they are supposed to be like this though.

The lag is the e-ink. Its better than LCD or OLED for books.
Haven't these been $49 for some time now at OW?

        • +5

e ink is the way to go in terms of 'easy on the eyes' and 'battery life'- no question

    • +5

you can't compare ebook readers with e-ink displays to tablets with lcd displays…completely different.

for what it's worth, this ebook reader IS a bit slow and laggy compared to newer more powerful ebook readers (but i find it perfectly acceptable…still faster than turning a physical page!). but for me, the tiny size and increased portability far far outweighs anything else.

love this little guy! highly recommended if you place more importance on portability than impatience.

I tried to buy this kobo from OW a few days ago. At the last stage of checkout it kept saying that it can't be backordered. I gave up and bought a sony prs-t2 instead. http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/sony-e-reader-6-inch-p…

Comes with a $50 voucher, but no details as yet on what the voucher can be used on. So might be useless. But $99 (plus postage) is not a bad price in any case.

    • $99 for the PRS-T2 is excellent. this must mean the PRS-t3 might be out soon with front light i can only hope

  • +1

wake me up when it has a "front" light.
that should be a pee-requisite for e-reading in bed.

    • I have a bedside lamp.
I got one of these, and prefer it to my Kindle keyboard. It is small and light and the screen is quite clear. Best device for reading novels/straight text.

    • The kobo glo has a built in light (it's has a 6" screen though). Not sure if there are any good prices around for it.

    • Buy a clip on LED light from ebay for like $2, like the ones you would use for a real book, then clip it onto your new Kobo. LOL

Does this play other formats? e.g. PDF, epub etc

Kindle only supports their own format, so all your books must be converted to their format.
I wonder if this is the same issue.

    • It's really not a problem- just use a converter, such as Calibur

      • "Calibre" is the software in case your googling for it. It's excellent. It manages your ebook library on your computer, and you simply choose which books to upload to your Kindle. It will automatically convert from other formats if required.

        Download at: http://calibre-ebook.com/download

    • That must be new. I have two Kindles here and both of them are loaded with PDF and epub files (and a few others i cant remember off my head… but looking back on it, there are much better alternatives to Kindle for the price…

  • We bought a paperwhite because of the inbuilt light function to enable reading with the lights turned off.

Now you don't have to carry a torch if you are reading comics in the dark under the sheets.

  • I got the Kobo Glo, I liked the bigger screen and the ability to read in the dark. Kobo's can read epub file types which seems to be the next standard ereader format whilst Kindle's cannot without converting it to a kindle supported format. Kobo books are a bit more expensive and their range is a less than kindle. Just FYI

Also, Kobo Glo (6" e-reader with light) is $138 at Harris Technology.

  • No stock in SA stores, 3 left in WA and 3 in QLD (not sure which stores)
