LaCie Ethernet Big Disk - NAS - 1 TB - Hi-Speed USB / Gigabit Ethernet
The LaCie Ethernet Big Disk is the essential storage solution for home and small business networking. This is the simplest way to share files between Windows, Mac and Linux computers. It can be used as a shared central repository via Gigabit Ethernet or as a personal hard drive off-network via USB. The second USB port can be used for connecting an additional hard drive to expand capacity over the network. A quick and simple installation wizard will have even novice users up and running in minutes on any wired or wireless network. The user-friendly web-based administration enables quick creation of shares and user profiles. When connected to a home network, the LaCie Ethernet Big Disk can stream multimedia content to UPnP-compatible AV adapters.

  • The only thing I have a problem with is this brand.

    Anyone had experience?

    • LaCie has been doing external disks for forever (at least 15 years) - originally for Macs now for any computer. They are on the "stylish but expensive" side (western digital 1tb external drives (essentials version) are about $190 (everywhere - including officeworks/ht)
Certainly they are a respected brand from all the accounts I have heard (personally I buy the less stylish but gets the job done versions :)

      • Yeah I'm the same. These 'sexy cases' and whatnot really don't get my attention.
All I care about is RPM and cache size when it comes to external HDDs.

  • Reviews here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154…
From a quick glance it would seem the drives are OK, the NAS a little less reliable.

  • I missed they had the network port (sorry I was focusing about the brand question)
That means you really can't compare them with the usb attached WD essentials drive - unless you don't need the network part I guess.
$250 is very cheap for 1tb NAS in any form - much less the stylish ones :)
(I have a WD worldbookII NAS - and it works fine though its really slow)
sorry I should be paying more attention

    • Gigabit Ethernet shouldn't be slow…

      • the network connection isn't - but the really tiny low power cpu and the limited memory restricts its throughput - about all you can expect with any of these cheap low power boxes is about 5-8mbyte/sec. yes - I was expecting faster too

  • I gotta say that i have had very poor experiences with WD mybook drives and i have not hand any problems with the LaCie network drives.
For this price, it looks very good.
And yes, ethernet will be alot quicker than USB or Firewire

    • USB and firewire will be faster than 100mbit. Even though it does say 1000mbit, it won't reach those speeds. Maxes out at about 14-15MB/s (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29905/75/) which is slightly faster than 100mbit, but not faster than USB/Firewire.

Overall, it's better than Mybook World Edition's from WD, but not as good as some other NAS units reaching 60MB/s-90MB/s on 1000mbit connections.

  • Umm, what's an "extrernal hard drive"? Someone needs to fix that.

  • The website has not changed the price or have I missed this (it does still have clearance written)

    • It went back up. One day only.

  • Bought one of this for $199 from DSE.

    • I have never seen Lacie products at DSE.
I searched the DSE website and they list no products.
      Which store?

  • They have a new model at 25% off RRP at $260: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/10769
