Why pay for spyware removal tools.

    adware from lavasoft.com - Free

Not only that, you have to rip off 3 peoples to get a less than generous discount.

Spyware Doctor is more comprehensive that freeware alternatives and certainly has more live protection. Read any PC magazine to confirm this as they run thorough tests and benchmarks. In fact, you can run the trial version and see for yourself what freeware alternatives have missed. Many times freeware also pick up false positives. When it comes to security I don't compromise on price.

    • ok, just tried it.

      • it runs at least 4 extra processes in the background/services
      • updates are terribly slow
      • bundles registry mechanic which is confusing (not to mention it does not tell you exactly what it is modifying when it "optimises")
      • uses approximately 110mb-120mb of memory
      • clears cookies and automatically deletes "threats" before you first see any options to configure sensitivity of detection (not terribly fond of that, i use some of those sites for ad tracking)
      • scanning is at a moderate speed (on full scan/comprehensive/rootkit settings)
      • no major lag noticed on pc (but not doing anything intensive other than scanning)

i was surprised to find 4 threats
1 of which was a registry configuration for windows file protection (which i like to have off)
1 was something that came bundled with megaupload toolbar called "emailnotifier"
the other two were hidden in the system restore files

not sure whether to vote negative or positive, so i'll stay neutral.

    • Spyware Doctor is just bloatware. Like Norton.

It's horridly slow, needs to run about 4 or 5 different processes in the background while it's "Spyware Guard" service is running, and it doesn't have any significantly better threat detection than ad-aware or spyware blaster or AVC, and a combination of those three in conjuction with a good anti-virus is more than enough for the average user.

      Don't bother people.

  • yes..that is right.

  • I've been using this for a few years now. It is a good antispyware program (better than free ones), but it it is also quite resource hungry and on some computers takes ages to load at startup. There is a limited version free in the Google pack. Or get it for $30 at www.wugnet.com (buy it in US$ for just under US$20).

Same deal for Registry Mechanic (which is also good) through Wugnet.

Well, for only those of you on ozbargain.com.au I'm prepared to beat the price on Wugnet…email me and quote ozbargain and I'll send you a licensed copy of Spyware Doctor for only $20AUD.

    • thats very nice of you
but its the resource usage that i'm concerned about, not the price.
if its good enough, people will pay for it

  • Can't say fairer than that. Maybe change the title of the deal to reflect it?

  • Title changed…this is an OzBargain exclusive! :-)
