ol gil needs a new laptop

I bought this last year and have had considerable experience with it. It has multiple problems (1) it overheats (2) the mouse(point) is terrible and gives me an index finger ache (my thinkpad with a similar pointer does not) (3) the screen can only be at one position and that is not optimal unless you are sitting on a desk and (4) the crapware and updating software from SONy is HORRIBLE.. NOTE that to reinstall windows 8 on this machine (to get rid of the crapware) requires a new windows key (none of my other laptops do)

Having said this, it looks stupendous and I have had quite a few heads turn in envy :)

All manufacturers preinstalled software is crap-ware, it more a question of whether it's less crap. And in comparison to all the major brands, Sony is best 'crap-ware' because it's all minimised into a Sony tray and you don't get stupid stuff like Amazon.com/Ebay shortcuts.

I also don't understand what you mean by 'new windows key', if you fresh reinstall you simply input the serial key given by the laptop after you format the HDD.

      • Windows 8 keys for laptops are embedded within the BIOS, and so there is nothing to enter by the end user when they reinstall the OS (provided they have the same version).

Yes, usually Sony has the best crapware.. but not with this one :) I have owned three vaios. In this one, 4 processes hog about 7-8% of the cpu consistently. Also windows 8 no longer comes with a key on the lappy.. On this Sony model however you CANNNOT install a fresh version. YOu get the license installed ONLY if you use the recovery DVD that you made, i.e. you cant get rid off the crapware (you can however uninstall a few). I am a software pro and I know how to install new windows :)

    • I wanted one of these at some stage and reason I didn't get it was because of the keyboard and the screen. How do you find the keyboard? You need some oompa loompa fingers to type with this thing.

      • too cramped if you use it on your lap, but its ok if you plan to use the table. the cornetrs are a trifle sharp and they hurt a little but the flex is really good.

It might be better to wait for a Haswell version to come out with much better battery life and graphics. Or wait for the Vaio Duo 13 out soon.

Great price however if you want one now
