Can anybody confirm if this has the ST3000DM001 inside? Very good price BTW

    • +2

I bought one last year.. it was the 7200RPM model inside..

  • sweet! time to fill up the n40L

    • Problem is you cant RAID the 3TB hard disks :(

      • +1

why is that ? any reason?

i have a synology ds413j and have purchased this hdd to add it in my raid configuration.

        • the n40L can't RAID it.

        • +1

          Err yes it can? I have 2 x 2tb raid1 and 2 x 3tb raid1
Who says it can't? It should be fine to do with 4tb as well?

      • +4

Are you referring to hardware RAID? I am planning to use ZFS on Linux so I don't think there is a limitation on that.

        • +1

+1 for ZFS - I use these 3TB disks with ZFS on freebsd and it works great. (N36L)

        • +2

+2 for ZFS - Run OpenIndiana, pass through disks via "raw disk", and you can have atleast 4 x 3TB (I have 2 atm), and then you can stick ESXI 5.1 on top, and run multiple VM's and also have a "NAS".. depending your ZFS configuraion you could have 3 x 3TB usable and 1 x 3TB for parity.. (also you can install a hack firmware which allows you to connect another 2 disks!)

    • +1

so, do these drives have standard SATA connectors?

  • Especially delivered. There is still the bargainer in me that wants to go in-store (since I live close to an outlet) and haggle for a discount $5 for pickup but this price is already discounted.

Any reason for the clearance? I am a bit hesitant the last Seagate expansion (2TB) I bought from Officeworks had a bad enclosure, so I unscrewed it and found the connector was loose. Obviously OW refused to honour any warranty since the enclosure had been opened so I could see what the problem in connection was. The HDD had no problems though and I still mount it with a Shintaro docker when I need to retrieve files.

  • I bought 6 2TB in the last deal and they all worked great, no quality issues. Now they're all pulled apart and in my system because who needs that many externals? lol!

    • Are they easy to pull apart?

      • Piece of cake - just a few clips, nothing a credit card can't fix.

With the 2GB ones, the made in thailand ones were easier to pull apart - better clip design than the made in china ones imo!

        • +3

Piece of cake - just a few clips, nothing a credit card can't fix.

And if you break it, the credit card can fix that also!

      • +1

i cracked my 1st one yesterday (old unit, failed) - a butterknife, some persistence, watch out for the plastic that tries to pinch you and CRACK it was open.

        wheres a cheap docker ?

        • Ryan Crowley is a cheap docker

      • +3

apart from pulling apart, is it all the same inside? just plug in normal sata and away you go?

        cheers

  • +1

Can price match at OW for a $103.55

    • +2

plus the ING direct paywave trick ($99.99 via the card and the rest via cash or whatever).

  • So cheap!!!

  • so this has a separate power supply? or is powered through usb?

    • +1

      Separate. All 3.5TB are

      • damn that ruins its portability for my laptop. And I can't even use it on there as an internal drive either i'm guessing

        • +2

A 3.5" drive that utilises Tardis technology will probably fit

        • +5

should know by now what are 3.5" drive and 2.5" drive.
and as internal drive? for your laptop? again, you missing basic knowledge here.

  • Grr, no longer on the DSE website on mobile. Make sure you take the link with you so you can show the staff in officeworks
I used one of their computers and free wifi

  • sweet. A replace hard drive just appeared on my PC this week. What timing.

  • AC Powered?

    • +3

desktop hard drive, 3.5", all signs point to yes

      • +1

You got a question…you ask the 8 ball

  • Nice deal =D

  • Got one from Officeworks QV Melbourne for $103.55 had loads in stock, wasn't the only person buying either

  • Thats crazy cheap for a 3TB Drive.

I would do the same. Copy data from a 1TB to the 3TB
Take the 3TB Out , put it in the PC and put the old 1TB into the external case.

Now problem , does DSE actually have stock of it

  • they have stock but it fails to process the order on the final page. also its charging me $9.95 for delivery,

anyone else encountered the same problem ?

    • Yes, getting "Error creating order" when trying to do a click and collect.

      • ok tried to checkout again. seems like if you dont enter the first and last name it lets the order proceed. worked for me.

        • +1

May have been a coincidence, I just tried again and it worked :)

Edit: LOL, just got a call from DS asking if I really wanted 16 drives… so the failed orders were going through, but i only ever received confirmation for the last one!

  • do these work on mac?

    • I had problems repartitioning the drives on Mac.

Other than that, they work fine.

  • The site seems to be playing up. Tried to purchase via paypal then cc and both said error. Then did click and collect and error too. Then remembered about officeworks lol So purchased there for $103.55.

2 click and collect txt msgs have come through on my phone! Now to see if the cc purchase goes through too…..

  • I placed an order online, however I didn't receive a confirmation email and it is not showing up in the 'My Orders' screen on the account page. I gave DSE a call and they couldn't see record of the order, they said they will call me back shortly. I made the payment through Paypal. Anyone else have this problem?

    • I ordered one and paid by paypal. Paypal took the money, but DSE site says I haven't made an order. Must be bugs in their new server as I had to reset my password before I ordered. No confirmation of order recieved from DSE either.

      • +2

DSE just called me back and they confirmed that they received my order and forwarded the tax invoice to my email address. They said they have recently upgraded their website and are having some issues at the moment. Might be an idea to give them a call on 1300 366 644 - option 2. However my order still isn't showing up on the 'My Orders' screen, but glad they have record of it.

I also had to reset my password and re-enter my name and address, the details didn't come through the migration.

    • Same here.

      • Had to reset password
      • No details in profile (first name, last name, address) even though I'm an existing customer
      • No orders in 'My orders'
      • No confirmation email yet

But going from paypal back to the DSE website did display an order confirmation page with an order number.

      • I'm a bit worried now. Past experience with Sony tells me that when I need to reset my password financial details have been leaked.

      • Not sure if others have had this problem paying by PayPal, but it seems like my order did not progress further. I rang up Dick Smith to check, Dick Smith's system is reporting that PayPal took my money but didn't give them the money. Checked with Paypal and the transaction was definitely completed. Dick Smith is now escalating to their accounts department.

Hopefully nobody else had the same issue.

    • same here, paypal and then no order shown after payment

      • f*ck calling DS service desk, first time i gave up after 30 minutes, second time I had to wait 40, to then have a totally clueless rep, told me call again next (this) week

those 2 calls ate all my mobile credit, since they don't have a regular landline number, also I dont have access to another line.

        2x f*ck that

  • Yeah there's something wrong with the DSE site. I've received 3 emails saying I've placed the order and 1 SMS. But under my account I've only got one (different to the one in the SMS). Better to have more options anyway… But I'll try to hit up Officeworks later today. Don't you all Ozbargain this before I get there ok.

    • +1

you can have my share, i tend to price 1tb = $30 after that AP sale :D

    • Having same problem, Paypal has paid but DSE myaccount shows no purchases, plus it shows my name as firstname secondname, which of course is not my name. Now do I have a order or not?

  • Thanks a lot, just grabbed 2 =)

  • Worth ringing Office Works… Somehow I wound up with a little (lot) more than the 5% discount.
Should be $103.55 delivered if you ring office works 1300 633 423.

    Office Works model is SGBV3000GB
    DSE is STBV3000300

Specs look identical (i.e. USB3.0 3TB AC Powered).

    • How much did you pay?

      • Looks like they aren't beating the price now anyway…
My price was a fluke but at $103.55 or $109 it's still pretty cheap.

    • What's the difference in models? Are they both 7200RPM?

      • +1

I've been trying to find this out too.

The DSE model can be found on Seagate website & elsewhere on the internet, whereas the OW model seems to only be found at OW.

I'd be going for the DSE model.

      • Just received mine from office works.

        STBV3000300

So same drive as DSE looks like they just use a different code on their website.

  • are these alright to run 24/7 for NAS?

  • Just ordered one, worked for me, $0 delivery feee :)

  • Too late for price match at OW now!

    • How come? It's still listed as $139 on its website.

      • I just got back Officeworks Keswick (SA) and the item was scanned at $109. Bought one.. still a reasonably good deal.

  • +1

I tried to price match at Officeworks Hobart and although their shelf price was $139 it scanned up as $109!

I grabbed 2 for my NAS anyway.

Edit: I took in a printout and that was at 11:27.

  • Finally got a DSE deal ;-) Plenty of stock in Perth William St store.

$139 shelf price, scanned at $109.

    • Finally got a DSE deal

Not a clearance item, just a regular sale at a respectable sale price.

  • Just went to Officeworks in Morley, Western Australia… couldn't get a 5% discount, the guy scanned it in and said that it's already priced at $109, even though online and instore clearly advertise it for $139. I didn't see him key anything into the computer, he just scanned it, swiped my card, and the receipt says $109. He said that head office keep an eye on these prices and adjust accordingly… apparently.

Anyone had a similar experience yet?

Oh well, still stoked I got a 3TB for $109 but getting it down a little more would've been even sweeter!

  • yeah just called 1300 officeworks they told me its 109$ , they changed it as they would be getting lot of price match inquiries

    • OW style.

  • Anyone already got it opened? Want to confirm the model inside.

    • +1

      Seagate Barracuda
      Model: ST3000DM001

Super easy to get out of that enclosure. Stuck an old 1TB drive in there :)

      • mate did u bought from officeworks?

      • What was the details on your box?

It should be something simular to:

        Details on the box:
        STBV3000300
        PN: 1D7AM3-570
        Model: SRD00F2

    • +6

Opened one (didn't bother with the second) I got from Officeworks and details as follows.

      Bare drive:
      Seagate Barracuda
      Model: ST3000DM003
      FW:CC43
      Date: 13212
      DOM: 11/2012

      Details on the external case:
      PN: 1D7AP3-500 3TB
      Model: SRD00F2

      Details on the box:
      STBV3000300
      PN: 1D7AM3-570
      Model: SRD00F2

      • +2

You are a god among men. May everything you desire go on sale for $1.

      • +1

Damn it, so the OW version (ST3000DM003) is 5900rpm
and the DSE version is 7200rpm???

        • yes thats true man, someone needs to confirm by opening ds one?

        • I got mine from OW, mine's DM001 model.

Maybe it's luck of the draw with these things?

        • I'm guessing may depend on manufacture date, my box says DOM: 12/2012 if thats any help

      • I have one on my desk with the same PN and Model but has the 7200rpm drive according to HD sentinel

        • I haven't actually plugged either of mine in yet…

I will do so shortly and check it.

Edit: Hard Disk Sentinel shows - Nominal Media Rotation Rate: 5900 RPM

        • I brought one from OW today for $109…. Same details as sirs2k but manufacturered 2013 and ran CrystalDiskInfo - shows as 7200RPM.

      • I just purchased two at DSE. The box details it's a STBV3000300.

Looks like i'm going to take it back if it's the 5900 rpm model.

        DOM: 03/2013

        • Does it make much difference on a 3TB drive? It won't be your boot drive or anything, will it?

        • I already have 2 x Seagate 3TB ST3000DM001 7200rpm drives in a raid 1 config. I want to add another two to turn it into a raid 5 config.

Ideally it's best to use the same type of drives.

        • delete post please

        • Please update, let us know what they are

        • Ended up returning them.

          The DOM was 03/2013

        • How do you know they were the wrong ones? Or just not willing to take the chance?

      • Is it possible to tell if it's 7200rpm or 5900rpm from the box?

        • I'm pretty sure the stbv3000300 is the 5900rpm drive unless someone can confirm otherwise

        • no its 7200.i got two.yippie

        • +2

          Have bought 3 drives:

ST3000DM003 (5900rpm) from OW with these details on the box:

          STBV3000300
          DOM of 12/2012
          Product of Thailand(HDD)
          Assembled in China.

ST3000DM001 (7200rpm) from OW with these details on the box:

          STBV3000300
          DOM of 4/2013
          Product of China(HDD)
          Assembled in China.

ST3000DM001 (7200rpm) from DSE with these details on the box:

          STBV3000300
          DOM of 8/2012
          Product of China(HDD)
          Assembled in China.

Looks like the Thailand made drives are 5900rpm and the Chinese made ones are 7200rpm.
