        • CrystalDiskInfo says my Thailand one (Assembled and Product of Thailand) is ST3000DM001-1E6166 7200rpm.
          My DOM is 03/2013.

  • +1

Guess they thought better to sell at $109 than $103…

  • I'm newbie looking to build a pc for the first time.
Is it easy to take this out of the case and put it into the pc and installed the same way as if you purchased an internal drive?
    Thanks

    • +1

Yes but once you take it out from the case then the warranty is void.

      • Oh ok cheers mate

      • -1

That's true but if you don't like what you see you just put it back in the case and take it back (assuming of course you didn't hulk it out of the case and took care not to marr the plastic). I still remember the time I bricked a router trying to put dd-wrt on it and took it back to officeworks and they happily took it back.

    • Also if you are using windows then you need to convert it to GPT disk otherwise windows can only see 2tb. Also if you convert it to the GPT you can't use it as a boot disk.

      • Is it the newer motherboard can do it now?

  • +3

I avoided the hassle with DS & bought it online at OW. No issues.

  • Are both these drives(i.e. from officeworks and dicksmith) 7200rpm?

  • -3

so its 5900rpm,the officeworks one(ST3000DM003)?.What about DS one?.Is it same too as someone previously stated its 7200rpm?

  • I bought three of these around Christmas for a Synology NAS, paid $125ea fromJB HiFi. Been looking for a 4th to fill the last bay, so good timing. The three I already have are model ST3000DM001, so slightly different. Been running great so far.

  • -4

DM001 is 7200rpm (faster) wherear DM003 is 5900rpm.Has anyone opened DS one?.What model is that, please confirm.

  • either ok for the ix2-dl?

  • Just bought 4, now to void my warranty

    • Would you mind reporting back where you bought them from and what HDD models are inside?

      • DSE.. and still attempting not to break the case

      • +3

        http://iforce.co.nz/i/wkmzqwnb.mnk.jpg

        HDD inside external from DSE

        • Hey brother , could u please post a picture of the box from which u opened this drive?.Just to see the date and model info please.

  • bought these for 131 last weekfrom OW, went to back this morning when I saw this post, they refunded the difference. So easy, didnt have to haggle.

For those opening their hdd for desktop use, anyone interested on selling the enclosure only?

    • Yeah mate i got a few enclosures i dont use anymore.

  • Got mine from OW same price as DS

  • +1

Thanks for Original Post, I bought this.

Thanks to Storyteller confirming these models are the ST3000DM001.

That means the Hard Drive specs are 7200 RPM, SATA 6GB/s with 64MB cache.

  • wow.. and i thought that ozgameshop deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104449) was good o_o

  • Just picked up 2 from OW
Will be perfect to fill the last 2 spots in my server after i make sure they work fine

  • Does the external case have an internal fan?

    Do these run hot?

    • I was using one earlier today that I was copying for 1hr and hd sentinel reported it at 59c, didnt feel that warm though.

      • 59c is a tad too hot for mechanical hdd

      • Yeah, I thought 60C was about the max operating temp… i.e. you want a good few degrees cooler than that.

      • That must be close to tripping the SMART drive temperature threshold.

I had a buffalo 3tb drive station which bundled a Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF) ST3000DM001-9YN166.

The buffalo enclosure had no included fan (even though there exists a spot for one). The drive ran very hot and failed smart after a few weeks …

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
        190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 047 038 045 Old_age Always In_the_past 53 (0 5 62 43)

        47 = 53c
        38 = 62c
        45 = 55c

So the drive hit 62 degrees Celsius, and has a smart warning threshold of 55 degrees Celsius.

    • No fan. Not much air flow via vents.

  • grabbed 2 and picked up from my local….fully sealed boxes made me happy. +1 to OP. Thanks

  • Grabbed 2 from DSE seven hills, build date 8/12 and both are 7200rpm models.

  • Just purchased 4 from DSE (online), going to drop these into my N54L, apparently the ST3000DM001 is compatible with the N40L according to the wiki so fingers crossed!!

    • I have got a ST4000DM000 working on my N40L. Not as a boot drive though, but it does work fine as a GPT disk.

    • +1

all drives are compatible with N54L, however anything over 2tb cannot be used as boot drive, since windows requires it to be a GPT disk.

Only Bios which has support for UEFI works with GPT disks over 2TB as boot drives.
None of the Micro Servers, e.g. N40L or N54L are UEFI bios.

      • Awesome, Yeah im going to RAID5 them and boot Ubuntu off a 32GB or 64GB USB stick i reckon :)

  • +2

Just noticed that DSE have changed the date for this deals expiry from 1/7 to 28/7, which is today!

    • +1

      You mean 28/06 (June), right?

      • You mean 28/06 (June), right?

        Bingo!

  • I need one of these drives but so far it seems like there's no definite way to tell which RPM you'll get, which is really frustrating on seagates part. The temperature and lack of ventilation seems like a valid concern too. Looks like i'll be waiting for another deal down the track.

  • just lookup for 11/12 as mfd. date.i bought two with 11/12 and my friend bought two with 11/12.They are all 7200rpm

  • so i ordered one yesterday online but still have not received any order confirmation?
paypal payment definitely went through and my card was billed. i'm on the phone to them right now to see what the hell is going on.

grrr. finally got through and they said it wasn't on their system yet and to wait 24 hours. i told him that the offer expires today so that would mean i'd have to go in-store and fork out another $109 just in case the order didn't go through at all. and knowing their returns policy, i can't just return it like that.

great system you've got there, "techxperts"

  • OW lowers the price to match DSE to deny 5% price match discount, so I split the bill of $109 to $10 cash and $99 on ING orange card, at least there is $4.95 saving!

  • is this compatible with mac?

    • got detected by mac, but can only be used under time machine, this means this can only be used for mac, cant be share with windows pc/laptop….

its also a lot slower than 5gbps, i got usb 3.0, but average transfer speed is only 60 megabytes per second….so that equates to only 500mbps, 10 times slower than what it should be…

  • Bought from local OW. DOM is 11/12. Opened with credit cards. Found it is Seagate ST3000DM001

  • Bought from OW. DOM 01/2013. Model# on box is STBV3000V300. SiSoftware Sandra reports internal drive model# is ST3000DM001-1E6166, and 7200rpm.

    • Mine is the same! Except my DOM which is 03/2013!

  • Got one, thanks op

  • Well two of my drives are dead as of booting this morning..

Was working perfectly fine last night, transferred about 100GB to each of them and it seemed to work ok. This morning power on the PC and I hear click click… HDD dead x2.

That will teach me for going to the dark side for HDDs.

edit: before anyone says must of been my fault etc - http://iforce.co.nz/i/fx0yshax.n5s.jpg i have 4 of these drives running the same machine.. take note of running time :)

    • The old WD drives are great. I've still got 3 x 1TB running in my server with power on hours of 29048, 29609 & 32425. (These numbers haven't changed much since Feb2012 as new server spins down inactive drives - which would make these drives last forever - touch wood)

    • try it on a new computer. So many times have I written off a hard drive as dead when in it was the power wart, or the usb controller on the host computer, or one time it was the driver that had been corrupted, and once i deleted that it worked fine. Seems suspicious to have two die so soon, unless you had bought 100 of them.

      • Tell me about it.

Tried it in another PC and another USB-SATA controller and they both do the same thing. I guess I will attempt to put them back in the cases and return for replacement/refund.

  • Price matched at BIGW today. Thanks OP :)

  • hi all, related to this (as I bought 2x of the drives) - I have an N36L, with 2GB RAM and the base 250GB HDD or I can use an 8GB USB stick for the OS. Can someone please recommend an OS that is easy to install and will possibly run from the USB stick (so I can then stick in more HDDs later on), but runs a safe filing system (ZFS?) will allow SMB connections from Windows machines, possibly has a usenet client for downloading etc? Thank you.

EDIT: oh, I'd like to be able to add more 3TB drives in the future and grow the storage pool, without needing to backup all the data, format, then copy all the data back. thank you.

EDIT 2: anyone used XPEnology? looks ok.. it's a reverse engineering of Synology NAS software.

  • So, ordered this at Dick Smith for click and collect as my mum was going near a Dick Smith store and thought it would be quicker than getting it sent. Printed out the order and she picked it up, just realised they charged her the full price for it $149, even though she gave the printout to the woman working there, she commented that its a good price etc so who knows what happens. Really annoyed as I dont live anywhere near a Dick Smith Store so dont know how to go about getting the refund without taking a long drive there! If they expect me to drive there I will expect some kindof compensation or the bargain has just been killed due to petrol it would take to get there!

  • Anyone have this power supply problem with there new purchase?
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108695

  • hmmmm….ordered on Thursday and didn't get an email from Dick's, but did get a Paypal confirmation and an order number from the website.

Order isn't showing up on the website when logged in (like some others here)
can't seem to get through on the phone (tried on Friday and today)

used the contact form on the website and am still waiting for a response.

hope they get back to me soon, otherwise will get a refund through Paypal.

    • i have a similar tale of woe. i waited the 24 hours as per http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108328?page=1#comment-14728… and still no order confirmation. put through a paypal refund request last night since i went in-store and bought one there.

      • same here, no update so far, no record on their webpage and reps on service desk are clueless, just opened a dispute but that's going to take up to 3 weeks to get the money back, and seeing the DS quality of service only serves to make me rage :( arg

        • i'm not too worried about getting my money back; i can always file a chargeback with my card provider.

it annoys me though that this sort of thing is the kind of "service" you'd expect from harvey norman, and i go out of my way to avoid giving them any business.

    • I also paid by PayPal on 27 June, had an order number on the confirmation page, but no confirmation email from DSE, and nothing in my order history. I had to ring DSE twice. First person advised that DSE didn't get the cleared funds from Paypal and asked me to contact Paypal first. I did that to satisfy them, even though I knew that the payment had gone through (got receipt from Paypal, credit card statement also contained the transaction). From Paypal's point of view, they had given DSE the money. Ringing DSE back the second time, another person escalated the issue to their accounts department, and claims that their accounts department will get back to me within 48 hours. However, he assured me that even if they have to re-do the order, they will do it at the same price. Shame about the wait though, would have liked to have the hard drive by now. :/

It's possible that persisting with DSE may end up quicker than filing a Paypal dispute, if they really will get back to me within 48 hours, that is…

      • They didn't get back to me as promised, rang back, was on hold for 20 minutes, and was told they will get back to me TODAY or TOMORROW even though that was what they said on Monday.

Maybe it would have been better to file that Paypal dispute after all.

    • I've put in a PayPal dispute too. Sent a number of emails to DSE via their web page and to support but have received no response. I'll pick one of these drives up from OW or DSE store.

      • I'll pick one of these drives up from OW or DSE store.

Both are back to full price. Your best bet is to follow through with your missing DSE order. DSE would have to be aware of issues over the past week, jump on the phone.

  • Has anyone been able to get through on the phone? It just goes straight to "on hold" music and never gets answered. There arent even any of the usual "our operators are all busy at the moment" messages. I stuck it out for 14 minutes and gave up. Tried again an hour later but gave up after another 10 mins. Bloody useless.

    • Took over 20 minutes yesterday.

  • Ordered on the 27th and still no email of shipping confirmation!

  • +1

I finally got through and the guy said there's some issue with their system being able to verify with PayPal and that all orders paid via PayPal have been affected. Reckons the "IT guys" are working on it and it should be fixed within 24 hours, but then he did say they told him that yesterday too, so who knows. Bloody farce.

  • Have just received an invoice from DSE. Ordered 6, and 4 will be sent and 2 are on backorder. So a 60% success rate.

Fortunately I'm not in a rush as was buying (some of )these for one of the HP Gen8 microservers, and they haven't been released for purchase yet.

The perils of online purchases vs in-store or click and collect.

  • Got my refund from DSE after I opened a paypal dispute on Sunday. Progress!

Interesting timing though….i would have been able to escalate my dispute today lol

  • Just realised i still haven't gotten an invoice, also brings this back up, did anyone else get a refund for ModRacers PSP for 50 Cents? Because I still haven't.

  • For those who paid by PayPal and are still waiting, DickSmith have admitted that they have huge problems with not only all PayPal payments since 26 June 2013 but also their ordering system. For details see this update.

  • Just spoke to a dick smith rep. He said the sale price was below cost and experienced thousands of orders. Some businesses ordered over a hundred at at time, taking advantage of the free shipping. He said it may take up to 2 more weeks for them all to be dispatched :( I Paid by paypal and still no confirmation email or tracking number.

  • 4 days ago I received an email apologizing for the incident, today I have received an invoice, the webpage still doesn't show the order … so, I guess things are getting better?

  • Finally got my 2x delivered this morning, cracked them open and they are the 7200rpm models.

    Going to be busy tonight!
