Good price for the Z906 but I still prefer the Z5500 (having owned both). Hard to find brand new stock of the Z5500 around though.

    • +7

Yeh still using my Z5500, its great.

      • +1

Z5500 has better sound and less distortion, though no HDMI.

        • +1

Correct me if I am wrong, but Z906 doesn't have HDMI either.

        • +1

Yeah I own this and it does not offer HDMI. Good sound system though esp. if you like a bit of bass

        • +1

Thanks for the reply. Could you please let me know how not having HDMI could limit the use of this toy? :)

I mostly want to use it for watching blu-rays etc. Not much a of a party guy anymore! (I am 34!)

          Cheers,

          P.S.

My Blu Ray Player only has a coaxial out and a HDMI TV out. No other outputs

        • I run HDMI from my blu-ray to the TV, and the TV has optical out. The benefit is that all my audio goes through the external speakers, including my DLNA movies and general TV.

        • +2

          Good question. Here's my understanding:

Optical & Coaxial audio are surprisingly limited. They can't carry uncompressed surround sound, it has to be compressed as (lossy) Dolby Digital or DTS. Furthermore, the new Blu-ray lossless audio codecs (Dolby TruHD etc) carry much higher resolution audio signals and cannot pass over coaxial or optical digital cables. But then again, the Z906 can't decode these formats anyway.

HDMI can carry all this, as well as uncompressed (LPCM) 8-channel audio. And it supports things like audio return channel which enables the TV to send audio in the opposite direction back to the speakers (i.e. for Digital TV/DVB-T).

Despite all these limitations, I'm happy with my Z-5500. It was only $290 delivered over two years ago. The only issue is that it only has one optical audio input so I need to use a switching device.

But these days I wouldn't buy a surround sound system without HDMI audio.

More Z5500 love from me <3

    • My Z5500 control pod recently died :(

Anyway, thought I'd ask just a couple of questions about using my Z5500 speakers with the Z906.

Is there any advantage in swapping the speakers?
Is it possible to use the Z906 control pod with the Z5500?

      • +1

You can buy bypass cables on eBay that allow you to sure the system without the controller pod. Also, you can find some second hand pods but they usually are fairly expensive due to obvious limited stock around.

      • I grabbed a second hand controller from eBay when mine died

      • +1

You can't use the Z906 control pod with the Z5500. The Z5500 has the inputs on the control pod, whereas the Z906 has the inputs on the subwoofer.

      • I hooked up a pair of Mordaunt-short premiere speakers to my z906. The other 3 speakers are stock. Sounds a lot richer now.

  • +2

Great price. Have to be careful with Logitech though as this is getting to end of line. Bought a Z5500 near the end of line and when the control unit died they stated that they don't repair parts, only replace and since the unit was no longer in production all they could do was give me a discount on a new speaker system.

    • +3

hmm. you obviously didnt remind them of your consumer rights?

      • That I did. And they kept offering a larger and larger discount but I kept saying "But why would I want another Logitech system if I'm just going to encounter this issue again?".

Several arguements later I ended up canabalising the subwoofer and getting an amp and some real speakers from the side of the road and op-shops. Logitech speakers are rubbish compared to most other speakers out there, but the subwoofer is still great for the price.

        • +2

Logitech speakers are rubbish compared to most other speakers out there

Throw-away claim. Z906, Z5500, Z5450 were designed for (computer) desktop use - satellite drivers are less than 3 inches, which "most other speakers out there" are better (at these dimensions)?

        • +1

Strange. My control pod light died and they sent me a new one. I didn't even have the receipt as I'd bought it at auction, I told them this and they still helped me.

Recently my remote's been acting funny. Told logitech. Straight away they replaced it. I offered to pay and they said no.

This is for the z-5500 btw.

I have nothing but good things to say about logitech's customer service. They were well within their rights to not help me, instead they replaced components for me, for free.

They were so easy to deal with. I don't know how or why you would've had so much trouble? Are you actually emailing logitech themselves or a distributor?

        • -4

          BOSE

        • +2

@Sxio I had a similar experience with Logitech Customer Support. Someone broke into my house and stole my Harmony remote charger, but not the remote itself (I know, wtf?). Emailed Logitech to see how I could buy a replacement, they just sent one out and didn't even give me the option of paying for it.

        • I know, they're awesome!

        • Same.
My control pod's backlight died, and they sent me a new one. I was even a year out of warranty. I sent them screengrabs of numerous forum posts which stated that the display going dark is a common problem. They posted a brand new control pod, no questions asked.

        • Show me a BOSE sound system with similar price? yep useless post!

      • you obviously didnt remind them of your consumer rights?

Anymore more information on how to do this?

I've had several pieces of Logitech hardware fail on me and when I asked them about getting a replacement, they've just brushed me off saying they couldn't get ahold of any since it was EOL.

  • What do people think of something like this or say the Panasonic btt190 package? The home theatre has 1000w RMS and cheaper.

I'm not sure about this system, but with many similar devices if the Blu-Ray player part dies, none of the speakers work so you'll have to buy a compatible replacement Blu-Ray player.

    • Decent package for the price but note that it only has Optical and 2 channel inputs. The bonus of the Logitech unit is that it has Analogue 5.1 connections if you want your sound card to drive the system (as oppose to the built in amp) or if you don't have an Optical audio connection on your sound card.

  • Using this set in the living room, does me well enough.

  • Not bad price. Considering

I bought the Yamaha YHT298 5.1 system for $249 (after further discounting from $299) from diksmith about a month ago from a deal posted here. It has got pretty much all areas covered such as new HDMI with 3D, ARC,iphone compatible and 4K pass-through. I can't be happier.

I replaced the front speakers with a 2 Kenwood floor-standing speakers and now the sound is great.

    • Apples and oranges really, $249 is 47% cheaper than cheapest web price, so, it must have been extraordinary price: discontinuation (replaced by YHT298), floor-stock, etc, whilst Z906 is current model, realistically discounted.

      • +1

Yeah you are right about that, but what I still don't understand is that is it really worth that much money for a system that doesn't have hdmi, mobile compatibility etc.

      • (replaced by YHT298)

        meant "(replaced by YHT299)"

One tip for you guys, I would pick it up.

I would never shop online with these sneaky guy, bought the UE9000 on Sunday now still "Processing" and no one at their online department to answer your call! 30 minutes wait. Staff promises to call back but never did.

    • so whats the reason to neg this deal? just because you have not received your UE9000?

btw, i picked up my ue900 in store :)

    • +3

how do you know its a 30 min wait if nobody will answer the call?

    • +4

guys before you start negging this guys reply. at least click on the product review link directly below the deal:

      http://www.productreview.com.au/p/dick-smith-electronics.htm…

122 Terrible reviews (far outweighing any positive reviews)

      First review:
"Seems Dick Smith have changed their warehousing/delivery arrangements. No problems with online orders until June. Still waiting a month later for delivery from a June 16 order. They have not responded to email queries or the submit queries on their website. Tried ringing 4 times over 2 days waiting between 10 and 20 minutes being told I was the next call to be answered. Gave up.
Now passed on the AMEX to get my $ back."

      Another:
"Have been purchasing from DSE since I was a kid in the 80s and no issues until this month. Ordered 12/6/13, expected delivery states 1-4 business days. Tried to contact a few times but your inadequate phone service on hold stated I was the next to be answered but 20 min later still unanswered. A few days later finally got through and the rep stated there were warehouse issues and that he would escalate to his supervisor and I would receive an email or phone within 24 hours. Days passed, received no contact and that retrying their contact phone line was a waste of time. I received an email today 26/6/13 with a copy of invoice dated 12/6/13 and states along the lines it will be sent soon."

      Not that hard to do.

  • +3

One way they have improved since the Z-5500 it no longer pulls 45 Watts in standby mode which equated to $113/year based on .29c/KwH

    • +1

      Damn!

I turn mine off at the sub, but it has blown a few fuses from doing this. I bought a pack of 10 off ebay a few years ago for $9 and touch wood, it hasn't done it since.

But damn that's a lot of power! I'm gonna go check that mine's off right now!

    • yeah they fixed it with Z906

  • Home delivery not available in Melbourne area

  • Definitely no HDMI input…

Waiting for the no stock in….. or in….. none in…..

  • Is this better than the Pioneer HTP522 5.1 offered at $199 earlier from DS (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106058)?

The Pioneer can take HDMI without any problem… But the deal has ended tho… Just wondering about the functionality…

    • The Pioneer has an actual receiver which is great for the price, it has all the inputs/outputs and features you could want and you can hook up whatever speakers/sub you want to.

The actual speakers though are pretty junky, I compared them side by side with a 5+ year old Logitech Z2300 system and the Logitechs blew the Pioneer speakers away.

Would be a better deal minus the speakers.

  • Nil stock online nil stock in VIC

      Told you so…. :p

Currently own these in my own room and we have a set of the 5500's in the lounge. Although the 5500's are more powerful I can't find any fault with the Z906's. There is no HDMI input so it doesn't support Dolby trueHD or DTS-HD audio. This means that for the price they're decent for just watching episodes of stuff, movie rips, or playing games. For watching from bluray discs you're better off with a "proper" home theatre speaker setup.

Also some people complain about the control pod for these but the non-textual display is actually very intuitive - especially since you can't read the 5500's screen very well at a distance.

    • +2

There is no HDMI input so it doesn't support Dolby trueHD or DTS-HD audio.

These aren't audiophile speakers. I'd say there's no chance of you hearing any difference between high-definition (trueHD & DTS-HD) and lossy (AAC & DTS), that are always paired in BluRays, even if the codecs were supported via HDMI.

    • +1

I've also got both the Z5500 and Z906 and would agree with the comment about the control pod. I find it much easier to figure out exactly what I'm controlling while I'm sitting back on the couch in a very low light room. That said, the Z5500 does feel more high tech with its LCD display.

    • I agree z5500 are louder, but Z906 satellites are better and the Z906 sub's sound is much tighter, not as muddy.

  • My fav feature is the wireless remote….There is no way I'd purchase if it were corded!

Well, I got one. Thanks Ozbargain.

    wallet grumbles
    Oh, quiet you!

  • Great deal. I picked a set up last night! (albeit price-matched from JB Hi-Fi as my local DSE doesn't stock the z906 and they confirmed only a few other stores in VIC had minor amounts of stock…)

  • My Edifier S550 crap on these and the Z5500.

    • +2

What an impolite set of speakers you have…

  • no more stock available

    • No stock in store but website still show in stock. My local dse let me order with the special price but I have wait a few weeks. Worst case I get 10% deposit back.

  • G'day mate - are the Logitech z906 going to be discontinued soon? thanks waiting for your reply

    • Yes. That's what dse told me.

      • Okay thanks for the heads up - Do you think the price will drop any further than it is currently? thanks waiting for your reply

  • Picked up at Officeworks with 5% deduction price match. Thanks OP

    • Hey man - how did you get it at officeworks? When I asked them in store they said they dont keep the z906 in the warehouse and was only available online? thanks waiting for your reply

      • I just called up the store that is closed to my house, it was kind of lucky because the guy said his store is the only in Brisbane has 1 left in stock. I suggest you call several stores to check the stock, good luck mate.

  • I managed to pick up a display unit. which was actually just new and the box was a bit shabby, not sure why i bought it thou. may need to sell it. looks almost as big as the z5500 in the box

  • I picked up the display model at that price in Campbelltown. I'm running a WD TV Live Streaming with all my BluRay's ripped and the optical cable worked with no issues at all.

Yeah it's not the same as getting a full blown AV receiver and speaker setup but it's packs a punch and the sound is clear enough for me (and most likely most). I needed a compact system that would pack a wallop and the Z906 was a good choice.

  • Hey BigTechGuy can you post the the calibration setting for your DSE TV please
And were do you get the software updates for it from?
