  • 1) So a "money saving coupon" is the equivalent of a "special" in Coles/Woolies ?

    2) These are fortnightly unlike the Coolies 'specials' ?

    3) Where can you subscribe to get these coupons ?

    • 1 - Most things don't go on sale they are generally good prices, you need to know your prices though because some things are full price and you have to buy in bulk. For example an 8 pack of Sorbent tissues is something like $18.49 crap price. They do occasionally (every couple of months from memory) do special books like these.

2 - They are for the stated dates but they don't come out every 2 weeks.

3 - You get these coupons emailed to you when you join up for a Costco membership.

I was in there the other day to have a look and compare the prices.
Pork Spare ribs were $11 p/k For 1kg packets (Same as Aldi and Woollies for 500g packs)
And Gillette Fusion was (i think) $54 for a 12 pack (WTF?)
Not that great when you add the $60 membership
I still say YES, you get some great deals, BUT they rely on Sheep to overpay on General items.

    My 2c (inc GST)

From my experience avoid meat at Costco, higher than butchers/supermarket prices and piss poor quality.

I haven't had a single decent (as good as supermarket) steak from there.

And from the other side of the fence.
        The Top Sirloin is excellent.
I've ever had a bad cut of meat from Costco.
I make the trip there just for the steaks.

        • Out of curiosity is your local Costco the one at docklands?

I can't speak for the Sirloin but I've tried the Porterhouse and the Scotch Fillet. Was going to give the Wagyu Scotch Fillet and Eye Fillet a go but after bad experiences (1 lot of porterhouse and 2 lots of scotch fillet, I gave it the benefit of the doubt first time that it may have been a bad batch) I wasn't going to buy such expensive cuts when there was a chance it could be crap.

          So true… There's nothing like a great steak…

Costco rely on people not knowing the difference. There are many people out there that buy expensive cuts of meat, but have no idea whether the meat is any good or not. They eat anything.

The quality of the meat depends on how the animal was looked after, what is was fed, it's pedigree and it's age…. Costco clearly only worries about price.

        • Yes Docklands and been buying them since opening day.

      • There are some experienced judges and the MSA that I think disagree with your assessment…

Oakey is Costco's supplier for most of their regular line of beef. Best steak at that price point I can find by a mile.

    Navel oranges 6kg $5.99

    89c/kg at my local woolworths

  • 100day grainfed beef $3 off

My local butcher has this $4 off all week. (No membership required)

How is this a bargain ???

Love the pizza at Costco (NY style pizza). $13 for a full pizza is good for a cheap dinner + $2 unlimited refills is a bargain.

    • +1

Our local pizza shop does awesome family size pizzas for $13 pickup.

Doubt it's worth paying extra for a Costco membership, paying for fuel and wasting time driving all the way to docklands and back though…

Maybe if you lived in the apartment block next to Costco, it might by an 'OK' deal.

I have a couple of friends who shop there on a regular basis so I just go in with them. You actually don't need a membership to purchase things in the food court. Maybe when the wheel is finally reopened in 2030, this will be a cheap meal to bring the grandkids to.

when the wheel is finally reopened in 2030.

          You're an optimist I see… ;)

      • You don't have to be a member to get food from their food court, at least at Auburn, NSW. Their pizza's are huge, too big to put into my oven.

        • same world wide.

  • Just like Pot Smokers who will forever justify their habit
Costco members will forever justify the savings, but rarely take into consideration the $60 membership fee, let alone noticing the overpriced items mixed in with the "Bulk" cheapies

  • +1

Cmon guys! No ozbargainers should ever pay for any type of membership.

Just sneak behind someone with membership or dress up as a tradie needing to fix a leak! … Or tag along with a friend that has membership.

Oh but then they make it impossible to pay coz only members can pay. Doh

I was in Costco a couple months ago. And paid $10ea for 2x24pack coke zero cans, 375ml.

If you are in the market for a new tv, it's the place to go, as the ticket prices are normally better than anywhere else, then they have thier sales, when tv's are much cheaper.

Never tired the meat, as when I shop it's in the morning, and I'm not home until evening, had the buffalo wings though, damn they are good value and taste great.

Anyways, pos vote for me, Costco never disappoint, and parking is easy and free.

    • Parking is easy and free.. you havnt been there on a weekend. Its bedlem. And only free for 3 hrs. I went today lineup for carpark was halfway to ethihad stadium. I parked next door got a park and was in store before a van i saw was in the turning lane. Parking was $2.00 which near broke the bank

  • You can come in and have a look in the warehouse without having a membership. But if you want to purchase something, you need to be a member

The pizza is excellent. Try it and you will believe. Costco have good prices on tyres. When on promotion, they take a further $50 off when you buy four tyres. Costco will quote tyre prices over the phone, so just ring them with your prefer tyre and compare with your regular tyre supplier. The meat: well I have bought Porterhouse and I was not impressed. Aldi sells better tasting and value, Porterhouse in my opinion. Bakery department has muffins which are a family favourite and currently $7.99 for 12 extra large. I agree that not everything is cheaper at Costco. My method for determining whether to buy an item at Costco is to keep an up to date data base with the best special I can find for each item at Woolworths, Coles and Aldi. For me Costco is a place I will buy at when I can substantiate a saving that out weighs the traveling time and traffic headaches to get there.
