Asus Fonepad 7in Atom Z2420 8GB $298 @ TGG

40

Just saw this on their website, it is $30 less than yesterday.
This could be a phone+tablet.
Could be a good choice if you really need a "big" phone immediately.

  • How do you hold this thing against your ear? I'm trying to work out the ergonomics of this… Does it come with a large handle at the back to hold it by? Something with a suction cup?
It's actually pretty good value for the specs.

How do you hold this thing against your ear?

id probably try using my hand, but i guess your options are only limited by your imagination

      • You need large hands, and I expect you will get cramp rather quickly.

I don't have the courage to hold it near my face, so bluetooth handset and earphone are must-have.

How do you hold this thing against your ear?

step 1: make sure no one is looking

    • dont need to hold it againt your ear

Nothing Special JB HiFi Same price http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/tablets/asu…

GoodGuys eBay store same price as well http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-ME371MG-1B049A-FonePad-7in-A…

What 3G bands does it support ?

  • I love phones with larger screens (like the Samsung Note) but it must look a bit funny someone holding a 7" tablet up to their face in public.

I guess if you mostly use a bluetooth headset at your desk, and have handsfree in the car, it would not be too bad.

Since it wont fit in most pockets, some sort of carry case (student backpack, purse, man-bag) might be in need.

And Id personally go for a smartwatch like a Pebble (which Im wearing now) or the new Kreyos watch due in Nov (which Ive pre-ordered - http://igg.me/at/kreyos/x/3832270) to receive texts/calls/emails etc without having to dig the phone out.

How do you go holding your watch up to your face to talk on the phone? ;-)

      • Hah, my Pebble cant do that, but the Kreyos can if you want to.

I reckon it will look very James Bond. Or maybe more Get Smart.

In the video on their site (kinda corny american actors) it shows a guy calling his wife while stuck in traffic, talking through the watch on his wrist, which is on the steering wheel so not far from his face.

Also a guy jogging and talking on the watch like its a hands free speaker.

        • how do you talk on the pebble? isnt it the same way as the tablet..

oh and 7inch actually fits into most men pants pockets

        • You dont talk on the Pebble - you just receive incoming caller name/number, text, email, facebook etc notifications so you can see at a glance if its important enough to get your phone and deal with immediately, or just wait till later.

You can also use it to play music and skip songs etc on your phone.

In a review I read, the reviewer can change songs (presumably playing from the phone in a speaker-dock in the bedroom) at the press of a button while showering.

I got a ZTE/Optus MyTab 7" tablet when they were cheap a few years ago.

As a joke, we called it the "big phone" - considering it to be utterly ridiculous that anybody would use such an ungainly device as a phone. Of course, it was physically capable of being used as a phone (more as a speaker phone than a hand-held), but using it as such was hilarious.

And… now people are buying 7" tablets to use as phones.

    Bizarre.

    • One of my co-worker retired her Galaxy Nexus and got a Note 8" 3G instead because the Nexus didn't have a big enough screen. I stand in awe every time she puts that thing next to her ear.

  • Buy my ZTE V9……phone+tablet 7"….$100….see eBay

    • Isn't that just the MyTab, think you'll have a hard time finding anyone willing to fork out $100 for it in this day and age.

  • I have used a galaxy tab p1000 as a phone for >1yr, with cracked glass after being flung around a bit was still extremely function-able
but im 7ft so 7"is not that awkward :)

if i hadn't just bought a new phone It woud be on my list for sure
