Until they put 2003 Resolution Panels into the MBA I am going to pass, even the ipads have more resolution.

Until they put touch screen Panels into the MBA I am going to pass, even the [insert any thing here] has touch screen.

    • +16

Do you mean 2013? I'm pretty sure the MBA would beat 2003-era resolutions.

      • -1

Nope they would not I had an IBM t41p had 1400x1050resolution 2003 era laptop- still working

        • +2

That was a 14" screen, and 4:3. And it wasn't anywhere near the quality of the mba screen.

        • +12

          firstworldproblems

        • The old IBM screen has 13% more resolution in 18% more area (roughly). So the MBA has about a 5% improvement in pixel density. Not a very significant improvement since we're talking about resolutions.

Are you talking about putting Retina Displays into the MBA like on the new world MBPs?

Wait till its viable. First gen Retina MBPs struggled to keep up driving that display.

Everyone knows to not buy the 1st version of anything from Apple, you basically pay to be a product tester

        • +4

I'd argue this goes for any electronic product of any manufacturer.

    • Just buy a 13" MBP?

    • Why do people neg when it was clearly a typo?

      • +3

it's ozbargain… lives are in the balance here

My 2011 mbp advertises as 8 hours battery life. What a lie, I don't even get 3 hours with just internet browsing.

    • +2

Faulty? Office and web browsing lasts me a working day.

    • +5

Are you running windows in the mbp? yes it only last for 3 hrs.

      • +1

Really? Even running windows on my 13" rMBP i still get around 6-7 hours

        Edit: well maybe 5-6

        • Oh okay, no I'm running osx and even then I only get 3 hours average (literally its like only 2 hours) and this is with low screen lightning never max and no keyboard backlit. I thought this was normal….. I'm not even exaggerating. Should I be worried?

Try resetting the SMC, that gave me a noticeable boost in battery life after 1yr of usage.
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

      1. Shut down the computer.
      2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
      3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
      4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
      5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Also run the MacBook's battery completely dry and leave it for more than 12 hours, then fully charge it.

You should get a little bit more out of it by doing those 2 things.

And yeah, don't use Windows - OSX will give you far greater battery life.

    • My 2011 11" advertises 5 hours and I still get around that with 230 charge cycles. Sounds like something faulty

  • +1

Is there 8gig option for 13"?

  • +2

I've got the latest 13" and I must say its awesome battery life

I got it from Apple through work (sal sac) and got 10% off the 8GB Ram BTO model :)

    • Did u get it in store? Or do u need to wait?

      • +1

No. They build and ship direct from china. About a week

Best laptop I have ever owned. Amazing battery life. I bought a fully-loaded 13" MBA the other week, just before flying to USA. Got academic pricing simply by selecting Student in the VRS menu, then got my GST refund at Customs. Plus Customs made a mistake in my favour by crediting GST on a Synology DS412+ I had bought on the same invoice as my neoprene wallet. My final price ended up being $1454, so the CPU and RAM upgrades were more or less free :)

    • Don't you need to declare it (and pay GST) coming back in as it's over $1000?

      • Once you visit the TRS desk, you throw away the box. So coming back into the country, no-one can really tell where it came from.

      • coming back in it's not new any longer, the value has fallen significantly, sir.

Anyone know if it's possible to order an 8GB Air through DSE? Only 4GB models are listed on their website.

  • You can order one in store but doesn't qualify for discount

    • Phoned up Dicksmith Glen Waverly, the guy said that all Dicksmith don't do custom builds anymore.

The Good Guys Brighton said they don't do custom builds…

      Something going on at Apple?

btw: after scanning the brochure, nowhere does it say "*excludes built to order" like it normally does

      • +1

Probably because the 8gb are not exactly custom builds - the ram is soldered on so they're just a higher spec model that ships from Apple in china. I ordered mine through apple Sydney business team and it still came from China.

      • The fact that you can't upgrade the RAM later (soldered) makes it more important to future proof it with 8GB

        • Well, within the next 2 years, I don't see a big need for 8GB. After 2 years, new laptop.

SSD's random read times are low enough to just use a pagefile for the rare occasions you use more than 4GB.

On my desktop, heaps of stuff running, I always hover around 2.5~3GB while browsing the web. Only ever breaking 4GB to about 5.5GB of my 16GB when playing Battlefield 3.

        • I've had both 4GB and 8GB airs and I most say the 8Gb is snappier, and essential if you also use a Windows Virtualbox vM

        • That is grossly incorrect when you're using MAC OSX Mountain Lion. I've noticed very heavy memory usage with a single VM on my MBP (13" late 2012). I paid $100 for 16GB of RAM from Crucial and performance is noticeably better.

On my Windows boxen, 4GB is fine and works quite well (not for a gaming rig though).

        • Lol wouldn't use an air for gaming.

I don't ever VM. Just so much faster if you bootcamp… No driver issues either, and directX works without a hitch.
