    ILLEGAL

    • They have plenty of lasers at nightclubs here jv - I'm pretty sure they're not illegal if you have a license to operate it.

        30 Mw Green DJ Laser

        A 30 megawatt laser is weapon's class…

I'm pretty sure you can't get a license for that in most countries…

        • *licence

        • -2

          *licence

          apologies for the American English…

        • +1

I couldn't work out why the green light looks brighter than the red in the image but at 30Megawatts that will do it :)

        • +2

alright, i'm getting 10 of these… building my own deathstar you know…

        • +4

Hurrr hurrr jv you clever cookie you!

Pretty sure that's a typo, considering that the Boeing YAL-1 is a megawatt class laser that needs an entire 747 to accommodate it. And I'm fairly certain (though this is just a guess) that it costs more than $112.95.

        • +1

maybe it's parallel import excluding aussie tax :P

        • Sensitivity of the photo receptors towards green wavelengths opposed to red. Same reason military flashlights have the red filter, it's harder for the enemy to see when your using it.

        • (though this is just a guess) that it costs more than $112.95.

Who knows? we've had some really good deals on Ozbargain over the years…

        • Title fixed. Was going to get it for this old girl to replace the ageing photon torpedo.

      Handheld ones are illegal.

If it's mains powered and has a power cord, it'll pass customs even if it's a 20W c02 laser.

      • True. Don't even need a licence to operate them, just a valid reason IF (and that's a bloody tiny if) a regulatory body comes knocking.

Of course you are liable for any damage caused by operating it.

You can also buy just the diodes. It's only if it is a self contained laser (put batteries in and that's it) that they are illegal to import, not just legal if they are mains powered, the components are fine to import separately. That's where the definition of laser pointer comes from opposed to just a laser or component, it's fully self contained.

Mind you, everyone I've known to bring back one of those 5-30mW pointers from S.E. Asia has never had a problem with one of those in their luggage. It's much better to take it apart before putting it in the luggage as then it's just a diode and a pen shaped thing that holds batteries, it's no longer a laser pointer.

Tasers, stun guns, and BB guns on the other hand are a really big no no.

        • They might've tightened the search abit. I bought a couple of hosts from ebay a few months back and got a letter from customs, didn't bother disputing it. Maybe it's because I managed to get 100mw diodges a few weeks before I ordered the hosts.

        • I would have. You can use the hosts for a led light if you step them down. Maybe they just thought it was a laser pointer, what was written in the notice?

        • +1

They classified it as a handheld laser >5mw. Funny there was no exact measurement given, since there was no diode in it.

The seller wrote "pen light" on the package so im guessing they didn't need to open it. I should've disputed it, now im on the watchlist :/

      jv, you failed.
The one stated here isn't illegal.

Laser Pointer Laws only applies to battery operated, hand held laser pointers.
      http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/services/firearms/laser_pointer…

You do not need a permit (Firearms) if you are using the pointer for activities associated with astronomy and are a member of an approved astronomical association.

      NSW:
      http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/139…
For all other states they also have a list, you will need to look online.

Please get your facts straight before you troll because it makes you look bad….

Anything hand held over 1mw is illegal ONLY if you have no permit or exemption.

    • Plus vote to JV!

Almost 16,000 comments (yep… that's no typo, 16k!)… so the guy can make a mistake every now and again and be forgiven.

(And just quietly, I bet half the neg givers probably have a combined comment total of 1000)

Plus vote for looking out for my legalities JV :).

      JV… you've done it again ;)

    who said anything about MEGAwatt?

  • +2

if buying should probably make sure you do a laser safety course.

Why is green perceived as brighter:
    1. Scientific: evolutionary advantage in seeing green better as it is what we eat so colour difference may indicate poisonous/ripeness. Related to why men generally have better night vision but susceptible to red/green colour blindness: men hunt brown deer in the early dawn(hunter) whilst women pick the fruit (gather).

Also why camera sensors have one red, one blue and 2 green sensors, cause thats how we see.

    1. Creationist: just is, don't question God.
  • wouldnt really call this a bargain, similar lasers on ebay around the same price range

  • But what about price?
    Is it a good deal?

I was going to get something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261263732301 for $25-$30.
    What is the difference?

    • no expert, but the $112 one looks to have sound activation including audio pass-through, and a large range of built-in effects/patterns. the ebay one looks pretty basic, and takes input power that's the same as a phone charger…not very confidence inspiring.

    • The effects it can produce is the biggest difference. I have the cheap one and it produces some basic star and shapes patterns, also is sound activated (but not well). The more expensive one is able to do straight lines, random shapes, strobing, and is DMX controllable (control it from an external lighting desk). The cheap one is fine for a basic room setup, but needs smoke to be effective.

  • stright lines is where's its at…

  • Is this aus stock or will have to pass through customs..

customs people would be having a lot of fun with my 15-20 lasers that never made it past over the years :<

    • As mentioned above, only battery powered 'laser pointers' are considered 'weapons'. If it's a laser diode or a whole unit that plugs into mains power then it's completely legal and won't be stopped by customs.

      • So what if I were to plug in a laser into a portable diesel generator.

        • +1

          You just beat the system.

Maybe put on a black spandex suit with a green L on the front, strap the diesel generator on your back and have the laser unit duct taped to your ring finger. You could be like some green lantern/laser hybrid man and people would totally fear you.

Or you would be awesome to have around at a rave.

EDIT: Actually the law against laser pointers also states against hand held lasers. So as long as it's strapped to your finger and not your hand then you might be OK ;)

      • I've had these full size DJ lasers stopped at customs, hence why I asked :)

        • +2

Write a letter back explaining that they are not laser pointers, or a hand held laser, and you intend to use them for kids parties or something. They can seize it, but when the law is put in front of them they can try to argue, but then threaten to sue for costs also and you should have it delivered by express limousine within the hour.

If you want, you can take apart the laser module from a CD burner or blu ray drive and you will have a laser capable of lighting a cigarette in milliseconds.
