  • Personally I'd go for the 1.7ghz, if you're going to buy a comp get a good one, it's only $213 more.

You should correct it to say 128GB storage.

Education discount on the apple website for the 1.7Ghz
    $1,359.00

1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    4GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
    128GB Flash Storage

or $310 more if you want 8GB ram and 256GB storage

but is i7 really necessary on an ultrabook?

      • Is Atom really necessary on a netbook?

Is a 286 with 1 MB of RAM capable of running Windows 3? Yes it was.

If you're just using it for web browsing, then get a tablet! I'll be running photoshop, illustrator, iTunes, and this processor takes some of the video load yes? So running 1080p YouTube will also be smoother, chrome etc.

Ima just wait for sept 10 before I decide what to get though.

        • +1

          I'll be running photoshop, illustrator

Why a MacBook Air and not a 13"/15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display? The ability to work with photos and vector graphics in crisp, print-like resolution is pretty much a no-brainer if you're serious about digital media; trying to use Photoshop or Illustrator at 1440x900 is a "bag of hurt" in comparison.

Personally I'd go for the 1.7ghz, if you're going to buy a comp get a good one, it's only $213 more.

That extra processing power generally comes at the expense of battery life, though, so the "better" option really depends on how you intend to use your ultrabook. (Not to mention that "only $213 more" is nearly 20% more expensive.)

AnandTech compared the i5 and i7 here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7113/2013-macbook-air-core-i5-…

The i5 and i7 have similar battery life at light workloads, but the i5 has ~13% better battery life at medium workloads, and ~18% better battery life at heavy workloads.

Agree. Most people need more battery life than a slightly more beefy CPU.
It may be worthwhile getting 8GB of RAM though.

      • It's true. I agree too.

    This is a tempting price….

    • +2

not really,I personally would like a macbook pro retina though, now just put it aside and using my toshiba kira laptop,so bad that when u get used to with apple's retina display, you hardly can accept lower resolution on screen

      • +2

I would prefer a macbook pro retina over a macbook air too
i'm gonna wait for a good deal

    • +1

It's the same 10% off that the GG, JB, DS etc seem to run just about every month. Think carefully, and if you miss out this time you won't need to wait long before it comes at this price again.

Or if you want a slightly better price wait till DS have their 15% off Macs sale

  • i'll wait after the apple event on September 10th

    • +5

I don't think anything will happen for the Macbook Air line for at least another 6 months.

So if you are after the Air, no reason to wait. The Pro is another story.

Too bad it's got a shit ass resolution. What fail. I'd rather get a Vaio pro 13 or something.

  • worth having a look at the current DELL XPS 12 deal as well I reckon - haswell i7, FHD touch screen, 256GB SSD. $1599 at present ($400 off RRP).

  • What is comparible in form factor and battery life? Can windows 8 be downgraded to windows 7 for suggested pc alternate? I don't know what makes mac os so special tbh.

I'm not an Apple fanboy (proud owner of a Windows phone), but after getting a macbook air last year I don't think I'll ever go back to Windows when it comes to laptops. Everything about the machine just reeks of quality, but for me it's largely about the OS and integration of trackpad gestures, it makes switching between windows, tabs and programs an absolute breeze. Everytime I jump on a windows laptop now everything just feels sluggish.

      • I wont disagree with you about the trackpad gestures but I prefer Windows 7 for the way I can cut and paste files (which you can't unfortunately do on mac os x) and actual windows as opposed to mac os x where I minimize or maximize. Believe me I've used both when I had my 15" retina. Had windows 7 running on vmware and it was good but battery life was only 4 hours.

Both have got their advantages and disadvantages and really accounts for taste.

        • I'm not a windows fanboy, I got a apple shuffle.

        • You can certainly cut and paste files in OSX. Just Command+C or V. But I agree, Window's Shell>OSX's Finder. Ive come to like OSX over the years but I still bootcamp it for certain apps and games. For notebooks, I find OSX great. For the desktop, nothing beats Windows.

        • You can copy, no doubt. You can't CMD + x cut and paste. If I could then I wouldn't really have too much issue with osx. Why would this be important? When transferring files over from one place to another. Just don't want to have redundant files left over and it gets a bit confusing. Not the safest way of moving files I know but if you want to consolidate images to one place, it's useful.

        • I see what you mean, I guess it doesn't really bother me. Even though i move files quite often I normally drop and drag from one window to another.

        • +2

You can cut and paste. Try Command+ option+v after you had Command +c

  • Have been looking for a decent ultrabook with Haswell and was originally interested in this one. However after reading a number of reviews, think I'll go with the Sony Vaio Pro 13. Just managed to get Good Guys Northland down to $1249.

    • You will love the slate battery addon, hunt for one when they go cheap (or when they're out?).

  • macbook? cool a new mousepad
